You mentioned you switch between seletion mode and ripple delete mode a lot to ripple trim. I'm not sure if you are using it, but there is a ripple command called "start to playhead" as well that, will ripple to the start of the playhead or end of the playhead regardless of what mode you are in. I personally use these tied to q & w with a different shortcut for general trimming. Then I don't have to switch to trim mode much at all.
@JoshuaKirkNZ
@JoshuaKirkNZ Год назад
That's a good thought. I do like the option to trim without rippling for some edits which the different trim modes help with.

I have a PC and stream deck. Will either of the shortcut or stream deck files work for me? I suspect not … . Very impressive use of keyboard, obvious how this helps you. It will be a while, if ever, that I get to a point where I can do this work at all, never mind at your level of proficiency!

Hello Joshua, thank you so much for sharing your keyboard shortcuts and the brilliant workflow that goes with it! I have one crucial question: how do you manage to directly select a left or right side of an edge of a clip (using shift-ctrl-cmd-2 or shift-ctrl-cmd-3 through your stream deck as I noticed on the video but they are not addressed in the shortcuts file you shared)? What is the official title of those commands? I can't find them in Keyboard customization?

Hello Josh, super helpful, as always. Is there a reason you mark the position on the timeline instead of the clip?
@JoshuaKirkNZ
@JoshuaKirkNZ Год назад
Hey, thanks so much. Not particularly no, but both are good options. If you add a marker to the clip then the markers will travel around with the clips even if you copy the clip onto a new timeline. The issue I have is when I am cutting down an interview clip quickly with a video track and multiple audio sources linked together, everytime you add a marker with the clip selected it adds a marker to every track (so you might end up with 4 or 5 markers). The work around is to select the video clip only and add a marker but this extra step stops my flow of working through the interview quickly. It also isn't as visually clear as having markers on the timeline level. What do you think and what works for you?
@mjscpr
@mjscpr Год назад
@@JoshuaKirkNZ Those are very good considerations, I didn't think of the issue that multiple clips get selected. Maybe there's room for improvement there for BMD to add a way to mark the top most clip. If I only mark the timeline I tend to misalign the mark and the position in the timeline.
@JoshuaKirkNZ
@JoshuaKirkNZ Год назад
@@mjscpr Yeah Totally. You also have to ripple delete or ripple paste all the time if you want the markers to travel along with your clips.

Amazing tutorial. I’m just starting and I was wondering how much of those shortcuts have you customized? Are they any default shortcuts you keep or is everything customized?
@JoshuaKirkNZ
@JoshuaKirkNZ Год назад
It's a mix of both custom and default. I've developed these over the years to suit my editing and to eliminate the amount of hand movement between the mouse and keyboard while editing. I'm left handed so these work great for me. You can download my shortcut profile in the link to this video.

If you haven't explored it, it would highly recommend giving Descript a try for breaking down interviews. My workflow has really changed in that aspect for doc work. Now I Use Resolve to build stringouts, a multicams of the synced interviews, then I bake out a low res proxy to Descript for transcription. Once it's transcribed in Descript I breakdown the interview using text (honestly much better than the Premiere implementation in my experience) and build out selects based on themes etc etc either in multiple compositions or just a single composition with markers. Then bring that back into Resolve via XML (markers import as well). I will also combine multiple interviews and do a rough story edit right inside Descript as well and once I feel I have a strong story edit in Descript I'll bounce out the XML and begin a proper rough cut with broll / music etc. By doing all my interview breakdowns in Descript I create a searchable transcription database inside Descript that I can share with a writer, director or producer and build out breakdowns entirely with a text based editor. It's honestly amazing for the writing stage and collaborating with a team. You can also auto detect different voices and trim out questions and blank space really fast. Really makes this stage so much faster. And there is even an automatic ums and ahh removal tools to remove filler words, it's incredible.
@JoshuaKirkNZ
@JoshuaKirkNZ Год назад
Wow that sounds amazing! I have heard about this a few times now so will have to give it a go. I especially love that it makes collaboration accessible to writers / directors who aren’t editors. I have used Simon Says a lot for Doc work when generating transcripts / timeline markers, but Descript sounds really powerful! Thanks for the tip and detailed comment Aaron.
@avdcam
@avdcam Год назад
@@JoshuaKirkNZ Anytime! If you ever want help testing it out let me know (literally just as a thank you for all your great content!) I use it now with a ton of content, even some commercial stuff. But for docs its a big time saver for story editing. There are other similar tools like Simon Says, Reduct.Video, Sonix etc - but I have found Descript to be the most reliable. It's a desktop app but syncs cloud based media, so it's just much more responsive than the fully cloud based apps. You have to use the fcp7 XML however for turn around, but since I'm just using it as a replacement for "paper editing" it's a massive help. There are some gotchas with the setup, like you need to make multicam sequences or use the original media so you can relink the XML to a clip since you can't relink using a timeline in Resolve. And timecode can be wacky too, since DeScript seems to default to a 00:00:00:00 starting timecode even if you upload with a 00:01:00:00 start.. but if you play ball with rendering out low res H.264 proxies of the full interviews to MC clips (and hell take a moment to colour correct for rec709 and solo the best audio feed) you can build a full transcript library in the cloud to work with collaborators, proofers, writers, researchers and the like to breakdown days of interviews into a cohesive story. One bit caveat I have discovered is when getting up to the "hundreds" of hours of transcripts the app tends to slow down a lot. This may just be because I was using a mix of qualities and archival videos instead of standardizing on let's say 360p video across the board to keep the full project sync light. But it's still worth exploring as they improve the tool.

Doesn't look like he responds to these comments much, so maybe someone else here can answer: I like this marker workflow, but would it make more sense for these markers to be clip markers? Then they follow the clip no matter how you shift clips around in the timeline and even into different timelines. Also, I'm not rushing to track down his keyboard shortcuts; several of his shortcuts are even more complicated than the defaults (CMD-OPT-CNTRL-3 to navigate through the pages?!). But I do wish I knew. the names of some of these shortcuts so I could use further customize my own keyboard layouts.
@JoshuaKirkNZ
@JoshuaKirkNZ 2 месяца назад
Hey Philip! I do try and reply when I can :-) you’re right about clip markers in terms of their functionality. If you want the markers to travel with the clips then you just have to select the clip first before apply the marker (1 more click than applying it direct to timeline). The pages navigation is more complicated because I don’t often need to use these much in a days work, whereas I’ve substituted my most commonly used action onto those single key shortcuts such as 1 through 9.

@@JoshuaKirkNZ Hello! No shade; I have no idea how most RU-vidrs keep up with comments; seems like a full-time job! Indeed, I also rarely leave the Edit page so wasting a 2-key shortcut on that doesn't make much sense. What DID you map SHIFT 2 - 9 to? I'd love to have your keyboard shortcuts file just so I could compare notes (e.g. what is that command called that you've mapped to Q???). Would you be able to re-upload the DropBox link for us? Thanks for the deep dive; love seeing how other folks crack this nut!
