This Caravan case study covers scope testing camshaft and crankshaft sensor signals while diagnosing a timing misalignment code, a valuable skill for all makes and models. I also got the chance to introduce you to iATN, and how beneficial it can be as an information resource during diagnostics. The information I found there was a huge part of making a confident call on this vehicle.
Engine Performance Diagnostics chapter 21
Symptoms
- check engine light (P0032, P0344, P0016)
- cutting out/surging off idle
- intermittent long crank time
Fix
- replace camshaft sensor reluctor (part of the timing chain sprocket)
Tests shown
- using scan data to evaluate a cam/crank timing issue
- how to scope the cam and crank sensor signals
- how to compare a cam/crank waveform to a known good
- understanding changes in Chrysler cam/crank sensor reluctors
- using injector and coil firing events on a lab scope
Tools used
- scan tool
- lab scope (Picoscope Automotive 4 channel kit)
- 20:1 attenuator
- iATN.net

don't feel that way my friend. those were valid and good questions. Gas Direct Injection changes things too. Now we fire the injector during the compression stroke at times.

Thank you, Sir. I am going through the same kind of engine performance issue, and the code that is set by the PCM is P0016, which is cam sensor, crank sensor correlation. The information about this issue you shared with us was more than being great and helpful. I learned new things today through your awesome teaching and I really thank you so much for providing us with such videos. Thank you again and God bless you.

Great Video it helped me out a lot after having to replace an engine on a 2005 Dodge Caravan 3.3l engine . replaced the engine with a 2003 caravan and the engine stuttered when close too 2500rpm. but saw this video and sure enough the timing camshaft sprocket was different. just replaced the sprocket and runs like a champ Cel light went off as well. thanks again.

Thank you for making this video. I love stuff like this. I'm an auto technician and I'm in the process of saving up for a picoscope. I think it's imperative that techs learn how to use a scope, especially since cars are getting more and more complex. Thanks man!

Excellent video, keep the case studies coming! I just had a Hyundai XG-300, 3 liter DOHC engine that I diagnosed using your checking for a jumped timing belt/chain! I used a Verus with transducer and ignition signal from same cylinder to verify timing was off 20.2 degrees! I kept going back to your vid for the math! The sweet part,....10 minutes, clean hands and 100% sure the cover has to come off! The reluctor that is roll pinned to the crank/timing gear came loose. Awesome!

Iatn rocks! I've been using it for over ten yrs! I wouldn't be the tech I am if I didn't use it! It's so important in this industry today to have other guys and gals in the trenches to share tips and ideas with! The timing references changed on alot of chryslers platforms when they switched form the SBEC pcms to the NGC controllers from what I remeber when I worked for chrysler! It's a big headache for alot of the 2.7 swaps especially

That brings me back bad memories!I had a similar experience where a customer brought me a flywheel and clutch to fit on a ford mondeo one Christmas eve,I stupidly didn't compare the pick up notches on the flywheel and it wouldn't start,so having to do that twice gave me a good lesson,great video and explanation thanks

Sorry I did not read all posts but this is another case of parts verification by visual inspection. I have also seen this problem with a full used engine swap and keeping your original computer and maybe doing a job similar to this story and not checking parts with a fine tooth comb. Great find Paul.

Everyone that repairs late model cars and such has to learn this lesson: Examine every part you replace and make absolutely sure the replacement is exactly like the old piece. Even us old timers have to relearn this one from time to time. Nothing worse than creating your own nightmare/never leave problem.

champion saved me lots of time i was supplied a 3.3 2003 and i did notice the flex plate spacing was closer like the one in your upload and as anyone would think put your original flywheel as i did with the larger spacers 3.3 2005 so there's a change in the type of engine timing here so i go ahead and fit this 2003 engine... sure enough, i get caught out there's a po016 and po344 code symptoms won't idle and rpm is limited @2200 the engine sounds smooth and can get the rpm down to 700rpm holding the accelerator but not on its own so i tried the old sensors and didn't change anything the timing gears are different from 03 to 05 in this case even if the Y in the 11th digit of the chassic is the same it don't mean it's necessarily the write engine. thank you

The injectors fire right before the intake valve opens, so spark and injection pulse never line up on a MPFI system So that wouldn't help. There are other methods to ID cam timing. Check out my "jumped timing chain case study"

That change in pattern was most likely when they went to the NGC controller from the previous one. Earlier design can be identified by a two-connector computer. NGC units, whether on a truck, car, van, SUV or whatever, had four connectors.

great video I really enjoy these videos. I am not a tech but I became interested in this aspect of auto repair when I had a cel that my tech couldn't figure out. Fixed with a tip from etch forum. 02 tahoe with a flashing cel while towing. po300 code showing a misfire on each bank that I could not feel when driving. The engine was never apart. The tip was to do a crank sensor relearn. My shop said they would try it and it now sounds different(?) and has never set another code.

Extended oil change intervals, oil consumption problems, those are a couple of reasons that the most common cause I'm finding for a P0016 and/or P0017 is a worn timing chain. In fact, an Odyssey came into my shop with an unrelated problem. While watching the data list I noticed misfires being counted on only one bank. No codes. No fuel trim problems and not really any vibrations to speak of. What was wrong? Last visit another tech did a piston ring job under warranty and had a cam off a tooth. Remember, the only symptom was misfires being counted. No DTC's, no other symptoms and I discovered it by accident, really.

This video is how I first learned of the pattern change, and I am on my 4th vehicle with the 3.3 with over 200k miles on each. A 92, 95, 97, and 08. One detail that I can't pin down for sure though on the old design is whether it is the rising or falling edge of each crank pulse that determines the base ignition timing, The most that I have found is a Google books result that claims the slots are on a 20° on center spacing with the leading edges at 69, 49, 29, and 9° BTDC. Leading edge would lead me to believe that it is the rising edge of the 4th pulse that matters and that the trailing/falling edge of the 4th should be pretty close to TDC. What lead to this was a Dodge Diplomat I saw for sale online that suffered a minor engine fire and is in need of harness replacement which triggered a thought experiment on if it would be possible to slap the appropriate crank and cam tone rings on the old slant 6 and use an OBD II 3.3/3.5/3.8 SKIMless SBEC on it to make it sequential port EFI with DIS. Preferably the LH car version as those have 4 O2 sensors and 2 logical banks which for the \6 would be the front 3 cylinders as one bank and the back three as the other. Knowing where the waveforms and thus the trigger slots are in relation to TDC would thus be critical to get the proper ignition timing. The cylinder numbering would be wrong for the purposes of cylinder specific DTCs and injector wiring (logical 1 would be physical 1, 2 would be 5, 3 would be 3, 4 would be 6, 5 would be 2, and 6 would be 4) but it should work.

this is good info and wish I had a scope. ran into a similar problem before on a 05 300 with 3.5l out of a so called 04, it had no injector or coil signal when I got the job. It was a job someone else abandoned after swap, it had a replaced cam an crank sensor. looked it over kinda stumped because it had signal from the sensors, what got me thinking was the plenum got swap. that made me about a old b16 swap into a civic I did before an found a obd0 and obd1 distributors had different crank angle correlations. The salvage that the owner got the motor from ended up swapping the motor under warranty due to wrong year sold after coming to the same conclusion.

no, think about the four stroke principle. intake, compression, power, exhaust. each one being 180 degrees of crank rotation. so if you think about it the injection is occurring no ware near the spark timing. I guess around 180 off at least. you wouldn't be able to compare the injection timing to the spark timing for jumped timing chain or belt ID. every system is different.

Hi Dan, quick question. I have a customer car in with exactly this fault. Once again engine was replaced with an earlier model. Sounds exactly the same as yours when revving, starts surging. However I have disconnected the cam sensor and it still does exactly the same (with a prolonged start). How comes disconnecting it hasn’t caused a change? I.e how would it still know to run lumpy. I’m just dreading the flywheel being the problem!
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 6 лет назад
I would think a long crank time would be normal reaction to a disconnected cam sensor, typically it is and some cars won't even start without it. (BTW my last name is Danner, first name Paul :-)) but I get Dan a lot. Just thought you would want to know.

(why would only Bank 1 be throwing codes in this scenario) Sir I took my 08 CTS in for inspection check engine light was on Garage says they think the reluctor wheel has shifted throwing the code. If I don't do anything what do you predict the longevity to be (they said the repair would be quite pricey or more feasible to do an engine swap) Thoughts 🤔(I had the timing chain, tensioners and guides replaced 3 years ago)

Have already put in 2 cam sensors with the codes still coming back. Thinking that maybe the timing chain has slack and is setting the cam codes. Car usually runs fine, but recently dropped power on the highway and once the engine died at low rpm driving. Should I be looking at chain tensioners or chain at 164k miles? Thanks for your help!

Paul, I have 2008 Chrysler 300 and it was running fine till it got really cold outside ( -30 -40 degree ) and yes I'm from Canada, and I when I went to start it in the morning it BARELY started , it was struggling to starts , so I left it running for 10 min to warm up then I started driving it , the engine light came on with the code " P0016 Camshaft\Crankshaft timing misalignment - Bank 1 Sensor 1". And I got to the highway I found out that after reaching 80 km speed it hesitates , glitches , breaks up , shakes when I remove my foot from the gas. so do u think the cold weather killed the sensors ? or it was just a coincidence ? should I wait till it gets lil bit warm and see what happens? oh other symptoms : -The traction systems light came on at the same time. - The engine light fleshes for 9 or 10 times. Any help will be really appreciate it. thanks
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 10 лет назад
First thing. The traction control light will come on any time the engine light comes on. This is because the PCM is involved in traction control. Fix the CEL and you will fix the traction control issue. Now about that code. What engine is in this? Is it a chain or belt engine? If it is a chain engine and uses hydraulic chain tensioners, very thick cold oil (especially the wrong viscosity) could have allowed the chain to jump a tooth.

Hello Mr Danner, I have a 2007 Chrysler 4.0 recently had cam belt changed, getting a poo16 code.. I was getting this code before the belt change, the oem belt was stretched and wp was leaking. Now with new gates kit still have this code.. And what really ticks me off just took it to dealer and they can't find any reason for it to set the code.. I will be jobless in 30 days and done need to be wasting money on them not Finding anything. I will say both crank and cam sensors have been changed to.. Sure wish I had a scope.. I do have a Autel ms905 and a matco scanner.. Which I did a cam /crank relearn with them and no luck.. I have a 3.3l 2005 and it had no performance and very bad fuel consumption. No engine fault light on. Read about a guy in australia who had same problem,turned out to be flex plate. Unbolted trans and put long studs into bell housing and slid the trans back. No need to remove just had enough room to remove flex plate. Flex plate looked good until put it onto the floor and the centre fell out. Compared with new one the crank tdc was about 20 degrees out. Fitted trans and tested,lots of power but now engine light on,,,p0016 fault code. Remove fault but comes straight back. Maybe cam and crank senors need calibrating. Does anybody now how to do this. thanks
