Dodge Dakota - Replacing the front Propeller Shaft

This is the second time I've had to replace this front drive shaft (propeller shaft). The first time was 2 years ago and the part wasn't quite the same as the original. It had universal joints on either end of the shaft instead of the original style which had a bushing style joint on the rear side. The rear joint failed causing me to replace it a second time. This time they had the original style available so that is what I replaced it with. Hopefully this one will last longer than the last one.

Dodge is definitely turning me away with their questionable bright ideas such as their top radiator plastic hose on late nineties Dakotas and Durangos , then there is the switch to electronic transfer case shift motor and not to mention their stupid design on the front propeller shaft that requires more attention than the true, tough and proven conventional u-joint design that requires very little attention except a light lube every now and then. I guess Mopar definitely screwed up on this one.

I have an 03 that I rebuilt the transfer case, put in a low mileage front diff and now I keep shredding prop shafts. I have it as a lifetime warranty, but I cannot figure out why. I have had it to the shop and everyone is dumbfounded about the issue. I can see the joint flinging grease again and about to go out for a fourth time in 2000 miles, parts store is not keen on replacement (I get that), but I'm running out of ideas

I got bolts out of the front and propeller on the propeller part after taking the bolts out do you tap it out with a hammer

what was the symptom that caused you to think it was the propeller shaft in the first place. mines making a loud clinking clanking sound that i thought was the transfer case.

Any idea on the size of the bolts both on the u joint and the t case? I threw mine out out of frustration and just recently picked up a new shaft. I need the length of the bolts as well.

When replacing the CV Joint, was there a paper or rubber gasket in the kit? if so which side of the joint did you put it on? the side facing the shaft with the boot, or the side facing the transfer case in that groove in the cv casing? Also did you use any type of sealant on the caps when you put it together?

Im about to replace my front prop shaft. Just ordered the part today online. Why do you need to mark the spots on the original shaft? Never did this before so i want to make sure im doin it right. Thanks

How long does it take to change it? I plan on doing mine soon bc it's making a nasty noise.

I recently replaced my lower control arms and now my front drive shaft is pretty much riding on the exhaust?? The drive shaft seems to be in decent shape so Just wondering what's going on how much clearance do you have between the drive shaft and the exhaust in the front

When mine was in 4hi it sounded kind of like there was a rock stuck in the transfer case when I would idle while cruising. when I put it in two wheel whenever I got to almost 20 miles an hour it would have a loud grinding sound almost identical to dragging an exhaust on the ground but it still doesn't make sense to me because it shouldn't be spinning in 2 wheel drive I pulled the front drive shaft out and the problem is solved for now but I eventually want four wheel drive again do you know of a way to test whether it's the transfer case or the drive shaft without me buying a new drive shaft first LOL I just bought my truck so I'm new to all of this

I tried to take out the drive shaft and cannot free the shaft at the transfer case. Any suggestions.

Do you know what are the rear bolts called or sizes lost mine replacing it I have the 4 flange bolts and the rear spacers just no bolts

If you are replacing the prop shaft why mark the shaft as if you are reinstalling the old one??
