Now that we have diagnosed the Dodge Caravan with the code P2308 "Ignition Coil 3 Secondary Circuit - Insufficient Ionization" in the first video, it is time to replace the ECM with a used one and see if we can figure out the rest of this puzzle.
PART I: • Dodge Grand Caravan P2...

coils can either be shorted or open. this one shows a good ramp followed immediately by a bad ramp. i believe the coil's bad ramp is being induced by an open in the secondary circuit. the energy has no where to go but back through the primary winding and back to the pcm, zapping the driver.

It might be the coil or perhaps the spark plug has a crack in the porcelain causing it to ground out for that brief moment berry interesting.
@EddieTheGrouch
@EddieTheGrouch 7 лет назад
Wow, Eric. It's probably already fixed but this is a great one to mull over. You have a double-tap fire event on #4 that's seems random in timing. You had that same event on #1 with the old PCM. If this is a strategy; why would it now be consistent on another cylinder? Even if it's a dynamic per-cylinder correction, nothing was changed during the swap to cause the PCM to change focus. It's not like #1 and #4 are on the same head to share a gasket leak or anything. Since the event moved so cleanly to #4 can we rule out a wiring or coil issue? The current spike seems to be from the longer ON time caused by the event so I'm not suspecting bad coils ATM. Maybe look at the ignition trigger to the PCM? Maybe a blob of crud got onto a tone ring and is fooling a sensor. Does the new PCM even know what cylinder is firing, yet? Is the misfire counter disabled until a crank re-learn or something? ARG! Enough rambling from a neophyte. What a cliffhanger! I'm dying to see what you come up with.
@greganagnostopoulos

Coil is shot and back feeding pcm, that's probably just confusing it and causing the re fire. Eventually it just fries the circuit. It sucks that you have to pull intake mani to get too coils.

adpt has a coil on plug tester,could use that to test/current ramp each coil.could also obtain a known good wave form from another caravan of same engine.this could/would eliminate possibility of bad coil shorting out driver in ecm.another thought since there are no known coils to be good/poor due to swaptronics is to buy all new coils and go from there.wondering if these engines using waste ignition comes into the scenario here. cam/crank sensors may even be a possibilty keep up the excellent work,brian

Since the current limit in the PCM is set to about 15 Amps and the anomaly goes to 17 it almost has to be something in the coil. If there is a hole in the coil with carbon tracks around it we can do wild speculation. Here's some... if there is a fault between the primary and secondary on the auto transformer where the secondary arcs back over to the primary sending HV back to the PCM it will not be a happy camper.

In autel, check MODE 6 for misfire counts. There is a kind of COP probe BAR for picking the coil secondary spark signals on sequence. two bars serial connected for two banks of coils, the fire order is 1 2 3 4 5 6.

Interesting... I always thought that PCMs can only be programmed once to a specific vehicle and therefore putting a used one in is not possible..but maybe that´s just what dealers tell because they want to sell a new one
@everydayfleettech2286
@everydayfleettech2286 7 лет назад
Dealers usually recommend a new one for many reasons. Yes they want to sell one but also a new one has a warranty and is less of a pain to deal with. When I was a tech at Ford I had a few bring in a used PCM. It was a bit harder but it can be done.
@SouthMainAuto
@SouthMainAuto 7 лет назад
Using used PCM can be a little tricky at times for sure
@theoldwizard998
@theoldwizard998 7 лет назад
The Ford part numbering system makes this worse. All PCMs have a base part number of 12A650, regardless if it is a 3, 4, 6, 8 cylinder.
@jimzivny1554
@jimzivny1554 7 лет назад
theoldwizard998 I worked at Ford Lincoln Mercury dealers 92-04 and the numbering system is actually very simple, based numbers haven't changed since the late 50's early 60's, the prefix and suffix denote what veh and year the part was designed for and the latest update of the part. I find it easier than GM and Chrysler who seems to pull random numbers out of a hat.
@theoldwizard998
@theoldwizard998 7 лет назад
From that stand point you are correct. While a given vehicle might use the exact same PCM for multiple applications, the part number system could not handle the multitude of calibrations (F150s had dozens of different calibrations, even on the same engine and transmission.) That is why they used the "tear tag" system for many of those years. Only recently, and I believe only on the F150, have they gone to on vehicle flashing during the final assembly. Most plants still have the PCM flashed at the PCM manufacturers plant and then large shipping container of a given "tear tag" are shipped to the plant. Prior to vehicle flashing on the final assembly line of the F150, Ford did not have enough physical space close to the line to store PCMs with all of the different calibration. The PCM factories would ship the modules to another supplier who would remove them from the shipping containers, stage the variously calibrated module by build schedule and then place them back into shipping containers for delivery to the plant. Of course "back in my day" (EEC-I, II, II and early EEC-IV), they "cut" a masked ROM. 6 to 8 week lead time. Eventually they went to a UV erasable EPROM to make development easier/cheaper, but the quartz window was eliminated for production vehicle to reduce cost, so it could not be reprogrammed in that field. WE HAVE COME A LONG WAY BABY !

After the coil warms up, the primary winding in the coil is opening making the current ramp drop to zero and arcing internally to a different turn in the coil winding. Since the driver is still turned on, and some of the winding is bypassed by the arc the current continues to increase to a much higher value than normal. You could prove it by moving the coil to another location but better still, just replace the coil and observe that the problem no longer occurs. For grins, you could put a voltage probe on the secondary and you would probably see two spikes, one for the glitch and another when the driver turns the coil current off. This is the time to listen to Scotty K and put in a new coil. Bob L

Eric, I can't help but think that the reason tech authority wouldn't allow you to enter that PIN was because you didn't rewrite the VIN into the donor PCM first. I'd bet that would have saved you the trouble of swapping the boxes around as much as you did.

Looks like the ECM did a resync in the middle of firing the cylinder in question, might be due to a change in crankshaft speed because of the engine misfire. Personally I wouldn't rely on live testing because of a chance of blowing out the ECM again. A cautious approach, use a bit of elbow grease and pull out the coil packs and test them on the bench.

I know it’s an old video but if you ever run into that issue again, look at the top right it tells you the vin it’s reading and at the time you were having the issues it was reading the vin out of the used pcm not the car.

Watching you program that thing made me very nervous. What a pain in the neck. I think its funny the autel could do it but not your expensive Bosch programming tool. Really curious to see what happens. My thought is bad coil. Being a 98%er i would probably just pull the intake, mark the suspected bad number 4 coil and swap it with number 3 to see if the issue moves or if something more complicated it going on either electronically or maybe the issue is with the engine itself, it is a Chrysler after all... If i do start swapping coils to diagnose a misfire i always mark them with a paint pen so i don't loose track and make some notes.

@HUBBABUBBADOOPYDOOP
@HUBBABUBBADOOPYDOOP 7 лет назад
Was the intake removed? Maybe they just swapped around the "low hanging fruit" to be easy? If this was my own, I would just replace all 6 for peace of mind. Costly- but they're all the same age (old) so who knows when this might happen again? If a coil is internally shorted- the primary risetime can be long enough to act like a capacitor- and spike the secondary just like that. I can also say- that this capacitance will increase to dangerous (to triggering device [points, ECM, etc.]) levels while diving, and under load. If this capacitance is enough- it could very easily spike and fry the trigger (driver). On my '89 Buick 3.8L all 3 coils are individual, and numbered. They are mounted to the ICM, and out in open, easily accessible, and easily kept cool. Wedging a kV transformer under an already hot area is stupid beyond words- much like burying an injector under everything hot. Worse case scenario- extended stop and go, AC on, worn plugs, rear of engine near Firewall.

If it was me and I didn't know for sure I would order 6 new coils and 6 new plugs. For one thing I never saw you look at the condition of the plugs. That's something I do on every misfire case. And if the vehicle is even close to needing them I replace them all. With the coils I would put 6 new on and see if the misfire goes away and the waveform looks normal. If so that's what I would stick with. If not you can always send the coils back...

Eric O did you try to put it in Drive to duplicate the original bad misfire at all? I am just curious if your bad wave form on the #4 would be more drastic or consistently bad with a load on it?
@100SteveB
@100SteveB 7 лет назад
My guess would be that that the current protection is kicking in on number 4, the event happening fast enough that the pcm is still calling for number 4 to fire - hence the second spike. But i cannot understand why the second spike is higher than the first. If it is current limiting, why does it cut off earlier on the first try then allow a higher current flow on the second try? Strange.

SWAG Bad coil. PCM "driver" is current limiting. I will even go so far as to say that that coil was originally in #3 cylinder and the frequent "current limiting" overheated the driver and burned it up.
@theoldwizard998
@theoldwizard998 7 лет назад
Watching again, not the how long the coil is "ON" for when it acts up compared to how long it, or any other coil, is ON for ! When it messes up, it is starting to charge (dwell) the coil coil much longer. Why it starts charging early is an unknown. It would be interesting to look at the crankshaft position sensor pulse in relation to those 2 waveforms. One thing that will cause early charge time is "adaptive dwell", which is where the PCM thinks the engine is accelerating so in order to get a full charge on the coil it starts charging the coil earlier.

My suggestion would be obvious,put it back to number 3 cylinder and test it there. If it shows the same issue after the swap,then there is your problem lady. However,if number 4 still does the same thing,then its the ECM doing its thing. I really hate it when customers swap tronics things like that. What is clear is the motor is running rough and my as you stated have caused the issue with the ECM ,it would seem they would have a voltage protection limiter built in to protect the ECM from such spikes but guess not. Not Rocket science but adding a resistor or any number of things to prevent run away voltage would be part of electronics 101. I miss the good old days.

Don't these engines have an issue with the valve guides on the front cylinders? If so could that be causing the miss you feel. Also if the spike your seeing was something related to a learning process wouldn't it show up on other cylinders too? Maybe there are two issues. The ignition issue and a valve issue?
@chriskeiley5343

if a bad coil on cyl3 was swapped directly over to the companion cylinder it would be cyl4. from my time working at dodge when you have a bad coil it will set an ionization code. but your cyl6 was wonkey as well. also check to see if the cyl head has been done on this vehicle. there was a problem with poor cyl head design on the left or front bank. mostly due to valve sealing, the symptoms would be misfires.

Does the scan tool show burn time? If so does it reflect in the data? Because it could be the pcms way of upping the amperage without burning the driver to get the plug to light

Eric, why wouldn't your scan tool show the misfire counter??

Diagnostics will not drive the Amps that high..You would asking for trouble. As the fuse is only rated for what 20amps?

This same problem was on #3 before the ecm was swapped. So, is there a sensor that is sensing that 1 coil (was 3 , now 4) has not fired and is trying to correct it ?????
@lovetolearn5253
@lovetolearn5253 7 лет назад
it looks like not only #4 coil is bad but also 2 after #4 is starting to go bad once in a while it draws a little more amps

I would go with Mrs O. Tech support on this one. I work on forklifts and the newer ones also have all this computer crap in them as well. The only difference is I don't have to reprogram a used ECM and new one is already programmed out of the box. I can just take one from another forklift in the shop advantage for me. I see in a lot of the post on here of very computer savy people. But is this problem really that complicated or are we over thinking it. Or wanting to thro parts at it. So the person wanting to put 6 new coils at roughly about $100 per. I was taught a long time ago to K.I.S.S keep it simple stupid(and by no means am I calling anybody stupid just a phase) Me from what Eric has done and what his scanners are showing I would replace now #4 then #3 ignition coil and retest. that's just me. good luck Eric and I enjoy your videos.

I have usually always just used the Autel to do these when switching pcms. Interesting you had trouble with the factory service Information

Yeah that's crazy. Love the videos glad to see someone actually still diagnoses all the way instead of flinging parts. I get the cars part swappers can't fix lol

Hey Eric, I am in the market for a new scan tool. Which would you recommend between the Verus and the Autel? It definitely needs to be able to do quite a bit more than simply read codes. Or which other scan tool brand do you suggest? Thank you

Autel hands down or a Virus

I am curious.I would like the condition of the spark plug and compare with the rest.Also the coil

Just to play it safe would it be better just to put a new coil on number 4.

Normally I agree with you being cautious and doing the right diagnostics. But, honestly, do you REALLY think Chrysler/FCA, a company that can't even offer a real oil pressure gauge in Jeep vehicles, would have some sort of advanced diagnostic that only randomly applies to cylinder 4 on their craptacular V6? Replace/swap the number 4 coil and plug and watch the problem disappear or move to the swapped cylinder (95% likely) or at least be able to rule those out. You're over thinking this.

How much do you charge for diagnosing an issue like this. I run into the issues occasionally that take 3/4 hours of work, but at my rate that would be 400 dollars...

Have you worked on any subaru legacy 2.2 rear differential. If you get a chance I woild like to see some differential videos on say all wheel drive. My Subaru legacy 96 rear differential is whining at 55mph and at 60mph the whine is less but still there

My guess when he played swap tronics he had a 2 cylinder misfire meaning cylinder 6 was coil and cylinder 4 was just a wire idk upload part 3 so I can watch it at work

Did you swap the coil out with a known good one?

Don't mean to second guess but why didn't you just move coil 4 and see if it follows??

the #4 is under the intake manifold. more work than just swapping but yea, he's gonna have to do that. lol

since this is a misfiring issue a simple leak down test would be in order to verify cylinder compression first, along with a fresh set of plugs after a good leak down was ruled out to rule out bad plugs. A spare used or even new coil for comparison sake, also moving coil 4 to the next cylinder would diffantly make it easy to identify the misfire if it travels with the coil. The other issue maybe that the fuel in that van might be watered down too always check that. The very least is the O2 sensor and maf sensor also not forgetting the temp sensor it can cause mis firing. check tsb for known items. good luck dont marry this van she cheats on you at other garages lol
