Late to the party, but running down a problem by troubleshooting vs parts cannon salvos is great. Eric, your a gold standard for being a diagnostician. A casual observation here is for Mr. O, the hunt is the better part of the repair. These multi-part episodes are great! Thanks for letting us look over your shoulder.

Hi Eric! Thank you for your video! I had same exact problem with 12 town and country. I watched your videos and replaced coils and got reprogrammed used PCM. Everything works now. So grateful for people like you who contribute to RU-vid, and help people to save money. Thank you again! And keep up the good work!

I talked to my son about this, he's a Master Dodge/Chrysler Tech ( just passed his Master Test ) he said he has seen this a few times , the first time he saw it he contacted the StarTec people ( The Chrysler Engineer Tech Help Line ) and they couldn't even explain they reasoning behind it. He had to figure it out as you did. Great job on the Diag Eric. Again I wish I lived in Avoaca , I would def come work for you!!!!

These kinds of problems with vehicle do happen and its nice to see SMA tackle it head on and not shy away even if it took a 3 part series. Eric O. has always impressed me with his dedication so its no surprise that he fixed the problem. Another great win for SMA!!!!!

Great Job Eric!!! You are a credit to your profession!!! Sometimes it is a handicap to have an Engineering Degree... Your Degree is built on Real World Experience, which is NEEDED to unravel what an engineer may have been thinking when they designed these systems. Root Cause Analysis is sometimes derailed by tunnel vision and a person's resistance to admit they MAY being going down the wrong Logical Path to a solution. As a problem solver, you demonstrated that you are mature and experienced enough to Test your direction, accept that it may be more of a distraction (than the real root cause) and be professional in your willingness to back track and find where the logic may need to be "Tested"! I learned a lot from you and look forward to watching each and every video you produce!!! Keep up the GREAT Work!!! ...Now about my 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.8 (only 24K mikes on the odometer) that sometimes (intermittently with no codes, once of twice a month) will crank forever!!!! but NO START.... I am looking through your videos to find one that gives me ideas to find the problem... I loved your video of the Caravan where you leaned on the back seat in the folded position and the electrical system, doors, locks, lights and etc. WENT NUTS..... That is what I am hoping to find... LOL

Son of a hoo haw!! You got it nailed. Now if only Chrysler engineering can arrange to put the defect strategy on the correct misbehaving coil they might could go somewhere with that. Until the code programmers learn to count past ten with their socks on I'm thinking it's a stalled project. At the same time I'm wondering how the ECM knows there's a defect in any coil and using the strategy when we can't see it at all. So Ok, it's on the wrong coil - whatever. Lovely miss Hanna handing out words AND tools, most helpful. Another mesmerizing series, keep up the great work SMA.

The “previously touched” parts was the problem big time. Secondary coil voltage leaking (Induced or directly) into the primary seems likely to me. So satisfying when you get to the problem;-) Late hours and headaches not helping. Nice!

Three great videos. Electronics can drive you nuts. I know I worked on military aircraft long before computers went into cars and it could drive you insane. And we had engineering coverage. Unfortunately every engineer is is an expert in their own little portion of the system. So we would fix the problem and then tell the Wizards how their system worked. Good video Eric. No brake clean and no flying wrenches. Your a saint

Excellent job of deductive reasoning. While you started down the 'wrong path' you corrected and decided to tackle a known issue to see what the end result is. Nothing wrong with that, that's called learning. If you see it once? You (and others) might see it again... And now you'll know.

Here's just a guess about the "double fire" on the number 4 coil: Since the number 6 boot was torn and likely leaking secondary voltage to engine ground, that arc generates a significant field around it. #4 is net to (adjacent :)) to #4. I'm guessing that leaking #6 secondary voltage induced enough current in the number 4 primary circuit to adequately charge the number 4 secondary and produce a second spark event. That could also explain why the second event was a much higher than normal current flow.

I think this makes for an interesting lesson in someone who doesn't have all the scopes and high end scan tools and is a 98%er. I probably would have swapped the coils to see if the problem moved and after that would probably have visually inspected the spark plugs. After that cylinder drop test is probably the easiest to do. I'm not so knowledgeable when it comes to being in the scope and the scanner all the time.

Thank you for your diligence. A few years ago, I had a 2001 Mazda Protege that I really liked. It had a random misfire/cylinder flood that would choke out the car/burn up the catalytic converters. I could not find a shop that would put in the diagnostic time to figure out the reasons. I ended up letting the car go for cheap because I could not figure out what was wrong. Had the shop been as diligent as you, I probably would have driven that car for much longer, maybe even now, still.

The close double pulse is some type of cross-coupling within the ECM. With those type of VERY fast rise/fall pulses can only be generated within the ECM. Your trouble shooting strategy is still 100% corrrect. You fixed two problems, one generated by someone else and then the original coil failure. Good job!
