The bits where you mumbled that sometimes you don't like making videos and darting about willy-nilly is exactly what happens to me in my videos. It feels like you're pondering for ages when it's just seconds and your mind is always jumping through different scenarios. You do a great job. You're a natural engineer.
I think at least half of your work "comes from another shop." Short of trying to hire you directly, it's still the best compliment a man can get. Thanks Eric!!
Mr. O, these are the best videos you make, but any of them are good and I enjoy watching them. I really enjoy watching you work through a problem like in this one. I am re-watching this one just because I'm looking at buying an Autel MS906BT to help with my own cars. I've also bought front axles and brakes for the wifes car due to your videos. I plan on making restitution for your time. Thanks for the vids, your skill and time in making the videos!!!
I've had my '05 Neon for 12 1/2 years with no major problems (knock on wood). My parents bought it from Enterprise (yes, it's an ex-rental) in 2007, then signed the title over to me before my father passed away in 2011.
Now Mr.O you are no mechanic, u are true technician in live form. And some ppl have nerve to say mom & pop shop are rip offs & jus sum dumb guy who can’t finish school. True intelligentsias.
One of the best mechanical channels on RU-vid. This guy takes a very thorough approach to his troubleshooting. Sometimes faster is not better. One thing I learned is not to buy a Dodge or Chrysler product also
Friend, you missed an opportunity to name this. Communication Breakdown, It's always the same, I'm having a nervous breakdown, This Dodge Neon is insane!
As someone who works on highly computerized / mechanical equipment .. i throughly enjoy your methodical approach on diagnostic and repair .. you’re a genius ERIC O
If I needed a big job done to my car I would actually do something 🤪crazy like Drive from Chicago all the way to Eric’s shop in New York just to get it done because you can never find a good mechanic like him. Eric is one of the best mechanics I’ve seen so far
I've been in the towing business for 20 years and I deal with a lot of shops. There's some good ones but there's maybe 2-3 that I know of with Eric's skills and integrity.
@@davidbrowne1588 I don't know if it was because I was in London but I had a hell of a time finding someone competent enough to look over a Ford transit before buying it. I couldn't imagine what would happen if it needed service. Oddly enough the best guy I found was a mobile mechanic that was recommend to me that did front brakes for me. I was hesitant to use a mobile service because they're usually drug addicts looking for a dope hustle here. But he was pretty impressive and had a shop in a old ambulance lol.
Loving the diag videos lately. Nothing wrong with good ol brakes and suspension but I really enjoy the ones where you have to use your noggin a lot more. Once I left the dealer and ended up working by myself I've found myself knee deep in a lot more diag stuff than ever before and I've been learning a lot from your videos like this.
That's why I hang on to my 1973 Chevy LUV pickup. Doesn't take up much room in the garage and it's dual points, so swap out the points every couple years and it's good to go. The closest thing it has to a computer is the radio. Even the voltage regulator is point type. Congratulations on 200,000 subscribers with many more to come. Now if only that damn phone would quit ringing for free repair advice ?
i was thinking about my 67 ford truck, three wires to the engine and four to the alternator. Of course I don't miss the poor manual brakes and steering.
Hi Eric You may be learning yourself. However you are teaching thousands with your videos. Your natural ability and explanation of your logic process is what many teachers lack. If a person can read they can read information in a book. This is not the same as seeing a logical approach to Daignosis. Keep Up the great work SMA Videos ROCK in my humble book!!!
It must be very satisfying to go thru and check the various circuits and be able to zero in on the problem by carefully eliminating all the other possibilities. Thanks for the excellent videos.
You do a good job on sound and lighting. I have watched many other RU-vid videos and they seem to care less if you can hear or see. Thank you for thinking of us by having very informative and entertaining videos. You are the best.
Congrats on reaching 200K Eric! I remember when I stopped by your shop you were at 40K, and that was only two years ago. I knew you had something special going back then, and you did (and still do). Thanks for helping so many techs and DIYers like myself. I don't always work on my cars, but when I do, I check to see if Eric O has already done the same job. :)
Nice diagnosis Eric. I agree with CYA and take photos of everything I find broken and send it to them or attach it to repair order. Don't know/care who broke it just documenting it. And then there are the ones that don't touch anything see codes and shotgun blast. Had customer of 09 Colorado Z71 P0446, Service 4WD, Service Stabilitrak & Traction Control. GM dealer told him he needs a canister & vent valve $773 & never removed the canister (Bolt rusted in CT car) to determine what was bad & only thing wrong was vent valve. They told customer to take it to a Chevy dealership b/c it had no codes for the other issues when it actually had EBCM U1000 Unidentifiable DTC, & C0327 Encoder & B2725 Active Transfer Case Mode Switch DTCs. Transfer case shift module PCB had water intrusion corroded & shorted it out accounting for all the DTCs. EBCM was getting U1000 from TCSM triggering Stabilitrak & Traction Control messages & warning light. Replaced TCSM and everything fixed for $100 less than original dealer quote...those places are what gives us bad reputation but then again keeps them coming our way :D
Perfect timing. I'm researching data to help a friend with a intermittent "no-comm" (truck runs) issue and watching your process will help me attack his problem. I'm also happy that you showed how to connect to the break out box, and the fact you don't have to have one. I thought the comm signal included two opposite wave patterns however. ANyway, great video because the steps you took will help me a lot.
On a CAN system you are correct. This was a single wire network (PCI) very similar to a GM Class 2 Data bus :) If you end up needing help you have my number, don't be afraid to use it Wyatt!
If you got something that can scan all modules when it is communicating you might get some direction by seeing what other modules are reporting a non-comm and which lan/bus they are on.
AWESOME, Mr Eric O, JUST WANT TO TILL YOU THAT EVERY TIME I HAVE NOTIFICATION FROM UR CHANNEL I FEEL THAT I AM BLESSED TO BE SUBSCRIBER TO THIS GREAT CHANNEL THANKS TO WHAT YOU DO ALWAYS . CHEEEERS
Say it with me: Two Hundred Thousand subscribers. Sounds good. And I did subscribe and ring the bell. About a year ago, or thereabouts. Anywho, I got RU-vid on my Smart TV and I watch you in glorious 65 inches of very high def. So, hope you get the job, cowboy, and and get the little Neon runnin' again. Thanks for the video and keep them coming. You know all 200K of us love your videos. Cheers, Eric.
Didn't think there were any Neons left on this planet! 😁 Nice diag - I love these ones because I have to remind myself CONSTANTLY to slow down, start from the top, and work my way down to the bad part. Willy-nilly is how I roll, Eric - don't feel bad. 😂 I'm gonna share an embarrassing and expensive story here that at the risk of looking like a complete buffoon, I probably shouldn't ... So I've had my dad's aluminum boat with a '15 Suzuki 20HP FI outboard on it here for a couple months now - my brother ran wide open through a pile of rocks way out in the middle of a huge lake up in ME (unmarked, and with 50' depths everywhere, the last thing you'd expect!). Anyway - he bought a used lower unit off eBay, since it tore the skeg right off the bottom - all I had to do was swap the guts from one to the other. Problem was, there was no center shaft bearing in the eBay unit, so I figured I'd attempt knocking the needle bearing out of the busted one before ordering a new one, and attempt to install it in the eBay unit. So I find a spark plug socket that seemed to fit perfectly, and a couple extensions to reach the bearing, which is all of 10" down inside the unit. Got the bearing out intact! BUT ... my spark plug socket is hopelessly wedged inside. CRAP!! (only that's not what I said at the top of my lungs ...). Rookie mistake right there. But WAIT - it gets worse ... So now I'm all fired up and not thinking at all. I grab the torches, and grab the lower unit - I'm gonna cut this POS in half and get my $6 socket back! So I start cutting. Some pretty thick aluminum on that one - took some time to get through it. I cut right across where the gears & prop mount up from front to back. I break the last bit of it off, peek inside ..... WHERE IS MY F$%#&ing socket??? Guess which lower unit I just cut in half? 😮 😬🤬 😔 YEP! $340 mistake right there over a $6 friggin socket!! What's even worse is, after a couple days to cool off, I grabbed the intact but broken old lower unit with my socket still jammed inside, and instantly had a plan - I took an old 45° tire iron that was about 18" long, stuck it in the vise, heated the pee out of it until I could straighten it, cut the chisel end off, and VOILA - I've got a punch. Grabbed Big Nasty, and with plenty of real estate on the socket end, rammed that socket out of the lower unit in literally half a second! Sometimes you gotta slow down to go fast .... 😧 And sorry to hear about that percentage of idiots on the internet that are making life miserable for you via telephone. I swear, the internet has made me lose faith in humanity ...
I went and made 4 of those home made test lights after seeing you use them. I love them and work very nice. Tried to get a couple different amp ranges as well
This guys from south main auto repair and chrisfix are the kings of this, i mean really really have a talent to tech and explains things ...6 months ago the only thing i know about cars was jump in, put the key turn on the car and lest go. But but right now i have more knowledge about mechanic because of you guys...thanks a lot south main you killing it ,keep it up you are doing great job👏👏👏👏
Yea man. That’s how I learned too watching Eric o and Chris. I really appreciate them, it takes a lot of time editing and filming. I had no idea before I started my channel how long editing takes
Hey it's really people like you and other people who help out people, for me very thankful. So I was going down the lit with you. This just happened to me today. I was trying to help my soon to be ex wife and figure out hear heating issues. We just got done replacing most of all air and intake plus Radiator, Thermostat. The thermostat worked but quite in less than a month. 2003 Dodge. Rented a compression kit because after auto Zone got home pooped hood, had radiator fluid coming out of reservoir. Had the tester in #1. Remove fuel fuses, and ignition fuses. UnHooked up battery. Was ready to start went to turn it over an forgot to place battery terminals back on. Turned the key, same garbage. Except parts of the under the hood fuse area had no power, couldn't keep an see where you were placing the wire into the connectors. I don't think I have power in the PMC. I am counting on you to figure this out. It's her daily work and running around weekend thinking she's 20 again. I had to give up after burping the car for a while and taking everything apart for the humpty Time, screw those car's. But I have to get it up working before she comes back Monday. Only if you could. Low compression. All signs I seen was worn out valves. And piston ring. She getting the Thick 4 cylinder Restore. Know much about tranny's. Mine started to hesitate 3-4 sec to 1st , about 2 sec for second. I need to get her car done. So I can get back to redoing my 1984 Honda Gyro 50nn MD. Scooter. Forgot Been replacing things she can afford. Never knew you should put your Brain on a charger to keep it going. Or have the person put it they're scanner gun and reboot the computer for higher charged battery, can do damage. I don't have special tool. She called me earlier, I told her she lost it. I have a black plague when it comes to working on rigs an now scooter. Please help me. Junk yards are closed around here. I'll have to grab anything off possibly eBay. I'm thinking water might have go into the fuze box, I don't have a garage, so had to use my patio umbrella between cars to work. Oh ya. Most of the fuze that box needed places r on one side . Stater relay box area no power.
Holy shit Eric. 200K subs? Shit i remember when i was your 3000th odd subscriber. hahaha. Great diagnosis, even if i am allergic to Chrysler! Catching up on the weeks SMA videos tonight.
Awesome to watch you troubleshoot this problem! I had a 1987 Dodge charger with a weird electrical problem noone could ever fix. I'm sure you could have solved the mystery! Your shop is only 187 miles from me. Almost worth getting my vehicles fixed by you just to make them RU-vid famous. Thanks for the cool content!
@@rustedratchetgarage6788 it was my first car (used) so I didn't know about cars very much back then. But I changed the spark plugs wires PVC valve. Everything I could think of. No luck. No RU-vid back then! I bet I could have fixed it today.
@@rustedratchetgarage6788 wow where were you 26 years ago?!?! The stupid stealership couldn't figure it out after billing me many times. Finally ditched it and bought a $9999 base Saturn.
I was expecting there to be a broken wire again with Chrysler's wonderful grounds, but that all went away when I seen someone already fixed that potential problem. Kept me thinking and guessing the whole video after that!
I find these computer and bus problems bewildering. Even so, each time I watch a no com video I gain a little more. Your 'keep it simple, work from fundamentals' strategy seems to work best. Fuses, power, ground, bus line, and 5V reference. I hope we get a followup on this one, I can see how the owner might bail on this one.
HAY HAY 200k!! CONGRATZ!! What a milestone! Please can we get some fall field trip videos please? You have such beautiful driving videos out in the country when you do the field trip repairs. CHEERS M8!
Good one Eric. Looks like will have to call in DiagnoseDan. Forget that it's not a BMW or a VW. You are both great in your approach. Thanks for the walk through. Been trying to get a grasp on how these communication networks function. Thanks again Artie ❤️
Ya see at 20:32 mark, is why I keep coming back to the SMA channel. "They can all carry current, currently." And of course you said "doodies" near the video end, can't go wrong with a poop joke. Take care!
Very good call! More thorough than you may have needed to be, but I'd definitely check every circuit I could think of before calling a PCM too! Excellent diagnosis process demonstration!
My first car was a 98 neon so I got a bias toward them, the first gens anyway. Had mine for 9 years but I dumped more money into it than anyone else would want to. It already drove like a go-kart but put a solid front engine mount in it with poly front sway bar links and she tightens up even more. I doubt this neon will get the green light to get fixed though.
I may have posted this before but, there are plenty of part replace and pray mechanics. You however seem to be an honest, highly skilled person. Is there a pt 2? I hate the R & P mechanics. They usually only give a five minute five mile warranty!
I have had a couple bad ecm's on those back in the day. Same issues in the one you had. Got a reman box for 1 and it was also bad doing the same. New, new box and it was good to go.
Congratulations on your 200k subs !!! My 2002 neon showed a p0601 / pcm issue, I went to allcomputersourse.com p/u a re- built pcm for $170.00 / dealer wanted over $800.00 plus a " reprogramming " charge , installed it myself car runs great, it has 264k
Congratulations on hitting 200k subs, good to see a great channel getting the recognition it deserves! I read that Google+ is going to be closed down. What social media will you use if it does?
Eric i reley like this particular diagnostic , i would truly appreciate a full in depth programming of the pcm , writing the vin , programming of the key , SRI reset ,MILEAGE reset , LEARN ECT . Thank you and hope that you will fulfill these parameters i am queries to see if the autel 908 pro will not disappoint thank you for the videos and i am highly anticipating this up coming video i am shore you will do your best and good luck .
I had a f150 roll in the shop today and it was from your neck of the woods. Only had 50k miles on it and holy cow the rust is no joke. Whole underside looked like a snake shedding its skin. It gets bad here in Jersey but damn that NY rust is no joke.
How in the world could I find a shop with techs as thorough and knowledgeable as Eric? I live in a big metro area...I'm sure there are a lot of guys who are great but I don't know how to find out who they are. I guessed that this car needed an ECM right away, but again, that was a guess. I'm sure Eric had a really good idea it was the ECM and it was probably experience that told him that, but he went through with the diagnostic anyway. That's the kind of guy I want in my corner.
Thank yoy for the walk-through of your procedure. I am surprised that a new ECM cannot simply be plugged in and work. The cars are simply too durn complicated nowadays. I'm nervous about my 2015 Jeep Latitude developing electrical problems.
Hey there Eric.! I. Just want to give you a shout-out and thanks for one of your tips on a seized bolt. I 've work on my suspension and replace the front srtuts on my '06 Nissan pathfinder. In two of the mounting bolt from the (pass) side, was rusted and seized then I stripped the bug'er.... So I heated the babies up to about 400%F cooled it off with some water. After a third time (BAM!) home sweet home.😀👍
it's a dodge neon, I assumed the ECM was bad to start with, judging by history, no crank and no start. he probably did too, but you still need to confirm it. later in video he found the starter relay was slightly moved, so someone probably jumped it to check starter/cranking, the "green zipties" at the ecm connectors, other broken locking tabs and then the air cleaner box and throttle cables! I'm left wondering what else is wrong and did they blow the ECM trying to diagnose the vehicle? I see a "large can of worms" being opened up :))
I own a 2005 Neon SXT that appears to have shot ECM. Has a new TB kit, all 4 motor/trans mounts, new CPS & target magnet, IAT sensor, plugs, wires and coil. Was running great until 16 days ago when the engine bucked for 100 yards when doing 45 mph then ran normally sgayfor two miles. Parked after driving 1 mile to shop. Key dance showed P0038 Crank position sensor. Fired right up and drove 1 more miles before the bucking returned, this time was more violent. I put it in neutral to coast into a parking lot. Key dance still only showed P0038. Waited 30 minutes then tried starting the engine. It started yet ran horribly making noise of pinking-detonation. It died so checked for codes to still only see P0038. Called a mobile mechanic that scanned for codes before installing a new CKS. Said no other codes or data came up during the first scan and none after cranking w/ no start after the new sensor was installed. He left after confirming it was getting plenty of gas and spark so I took off the CPS to check the back. It had a long crack and seeped motor oil into the connector so all of the contacts were sitting in a puddle of oil. Replaced it and cleaned the connector out. Now it still cranks with no start with the code P0038 disappearing. Did the 10 flash self-diagnosis several times with no trouble codes showing up. A nearby shop said only the Dodge dealer and one other shop in town have the proper scanning and flashing equipment for Dodge Chrysler. So I called both to be told they don't mess with Neon's anymore. This video will help me checking things out further before ordering a refurbished ECM that's programed according to the car's VIN.
I was a supplier engineer who offhandedly toured through the mega-mall turned HQ/engineering center that is now FCA US Headquarters and Tech Center in Auburn Hills in the early 90s. (GE Capital, the leasor, due to Chrysler's still precarious financial condition at the time, required that the massive complex be multi-purpose built, thus an enormous shopping mall layout) I saw production prototype Neons being worked on in their multi-bay service centers. I commented that I thought they were cute. Our Chrysler engineering escort rolled their eyes, muttering such phrases as "pieces of $#!7" and "cheap junk". Fortunately we supplied nothing on that platform.
I remember when you could fix a car with a screw driver pair of pliers and a coat hanger. Whop whop 200k. Hows vinney? PS you know the part store you hate they play a ad about 10 times over your video not to mention names but it starts with auto
