Come along with Eric O. at the SMA shop as he has a look at this Dodge Neon that was dragged in with the engine light on and the transmission stuck in limp mode, meaning it won't shift. He discovers and repairs the problem in the harness pretty quickly but we soon find out that there is likely more to the story than we were told. Enjoy!!

I must say... I'm an electrician and I'm always impressed by your wiring skills. I couldn't do it better myself. Most mechanics around here would just twist the wires back together and wrap cheapo electrical tape around it, then ship it LOL. I think I've watched almost all your videos now and I think you do great work. Thanks for taking the time to make em all!

The catalytic converter/exhaust had been replaced at some point with what appear to be a non Chrysler made exhaust system. I don't see typical welds from a general shop job - they seem quite clean. It was tilted which caused the O2 sensor to be horizontal against the heat shield and not at a slight downward angle like it's supposed to be. (I work for Chrysler - we've seen this before)

To address the oil thing at the end - SOHC Neons burn a lot of oil from a poorly designed PVC system. The PVC location on the left side of the valve cover is prone to excessive direct oil exposure, so the intake vacuum will pull it through and it pools in the manifold right after the throttle body. Next time you get one pull the intake tubing of at the manifold and have a look inside. It can be remedied by either converting to a breather only setup or rerouting the PVC to the hole on the back of the valve cover (which is normally a fresh air inlet).

Hi Eric, seeing you do that wire joining I just thought I would put in my pennith. I personaly don't use the glue type because you can buy it on reels but the glue lined is really good and I do like that too for wet applications. I also use clear so you can see the join. To clear that black tarnish I use La-Co flux. I also use proper lead tin solder, I find the lead free is pretty useless when it comes to nice solder flowing and making a good amalgam. Another great use for the clear is when making wire looms you can print labels on the computer or use a cable marker and then put shrink sleeving over the top. I do make wire harnesses and when it is complex that is how I mark the wires. Nice to see an auto mechanic taking pride in making good solder joints. It is a lost skill. Yours Allister Denyer

A little tip for those of us that like our good quality electrical taping . ALWAYS end your tape session with a 2 inch piece that is NOT under pressure from a stretch .Roll out 2 inches past your stopping point and cut it with a knife or scissors. Tearing the tape to seperate it from the roll will enable the tape to UNWIND itself probably before that car leaves your shop bay.

Hey Eric, Heres a little trick i learned from having to solder some small wires together in a mod i did for some PC Cooling fans (using some high power delta fans, where i had to built a small "PWM signal inverter module inline with the fan). I wasnt able to get a satisfactory joint by using wire holders like you, wires were to flimsy, so i had a brainstorm and quick experiement...... So heres what i did, and you might like this: 1. Strip ends of wires like you normally would, for this job i did it was about 1cm stripped each wire. 2. cut same length of 60/40 solder off the roll. (Electronics solder, so ~1mm thick) 3. grabbed my heatshrink, installed it over one wire, then line up both stripped wires AND the solder piece all alongside each other and use my little wire jig to hold the wires in place. 4. slid the heatshrink over the joint and lined it up. 5. started by shrinking each end once happy with wire placement to hold and worked inwards until shrunk. 6. then using my temperature conrolled iron i applied liberal amount of heat to the middle of the joint, and maintained the heat until the solder melted and flowed into the joint. 7. Bingo! This works because typical 60/40 solder has a lower melting point than that of the heatshrink (which is very heat resistant mind you), so when you hit the middle of the joint with heat, the solder melts, and the heatshrink wants to shrink and it actually forces the solder right into the wire strands and fuses them together very very well. This also explains why the wires pulled out on you, because you melted the solder before your heatshrink was sufficiently bonded to the wire insulation to retain it. I had my iron set around 250 celsius or so and the heatshrink could pretty much handle that all day without melting. I also noted that the heat would soften the insulation of the wire near the joint, and it would essentially fuse / glue itself to the heatshrink over it creating a very watertight seal. Obviously you need to use the smallest possible size heatshrink you can over the joint for best results, and you should use CLEAR so you can see when the solder flows If you would like, i could create a video showing how i do this, and how well it works. Regards, Alex.

Eric, thank you for the meticulous attention to detail; you shame me into doing things right the first time: "Eric wouldn't shoemaker it like that! Just do it the right way." BTW, a theory on how the harness happened: many precast parking curbs are pinned in place with a couple of feet of 1/2" rebar. Between tires bumping the curb and frost heave, the rebar works its way up and sticks out above the curb by several inches. The sloped front of the curb could have lifted the car just enough for the harness to go over the rebar but then settle down hooked onto it. Sad for the lady who owns it.

So nice to see someone actually showing the correct way to use heat shrink tube, rather than just putting a lighter flame to it. So many other so called techs seem to think that using a flame is more than good enough - often burning the tube in the process. Nice job, Eric.

Vampire tools are made in Japan and are very good quality. I was first exposed to them when Scotty Kilmer displayed them as received from someone who sent them for him to try. They looked like a quality set, so I went to Amazon and bought a full set of 7 or 8 for about $158. I am still using them and they are one of my favorite sets especially to grab and turn damaged screws.

Outstanding as always. I think the viewers would like you to do an in depth video on flash programming. I'm talking about a multiple part, in great depth and detail, take us to school video. Detailing not only the equipment used, but where the programming info comes from. A start at A and go to Z type instructional video, that after viewing, we would have a handle on this process. Our biggest challenge as repair professionals outside the dealership, is keeping up with the evolving technology. Thank you and others that I wont call by name on your channel for your videos. I felt to watched this after my experience today! I always imagine how happy your customers, with this kind of a service. I have a neon 2005 2L, auto, which i bought with a wire connected right from the fan relay pin, down to the yellow wire to both fans. Now, the Relay pin where this wire is connected from got burnt a bit, and when wiggle that wire while the car is idling, the car got shut off. After all, the car was just cranking, not start. I tested the relay first, and heard its clicking. With my cheap DVOM, i check fuses inside and found out that 15 amp fuse LDP Engine relay fuse has no continuation. Underneath, where you fixed the wiring harness, i found out that yellow wire from the fan relay and another black wire were opened and touching. The car started after having insulated those wires and probably replaced that 15 amp fuse LDP Engine relay fuse! "Visual inspection is key!!" Any further suggestions?

It's gotta suck when you have to explain to a customer why their engine light came on a couple days after you fixed an O2 sensor problem, and that it may be $600+ for a new cat. Regular people see a shop trying to gouge them, while we see it as the consequences of letting a smaller problem linger for too long.

Super 33 is the best. Easy to work with, makes you look like you know how to tape. Been using it since '76 when I worked in a CB shop right after HS. The Portasol has a heater tip that you can use for heat shrink in a pinch, doesn't have a heat shield though, at least mine doesn't. Gonna have to look in to that torch, I usually use an electric gun but that keeps you from having to drag out the extension cords. Great video, Eric.

The best way to join two stranded wires is to use shrink tubing as you did, then strip off 1/2" off of each wire. Then split the strands of each wire into a "Y" shape (think two legs). then bring the two wires together, "scissoring" the two "Y"s together (search the urban dictionary for "scissoring" if you need to). Then twist each "Y" in opposite directions. You'll have a nice joint that will stay together while you solder it. Then do the shrink tubing as you did.

I have an '04 PT Cruiser which is basically the same car. On several occasions I have had evap. codes come and go. I found out that there is a check valve bonded into the top of the gas tank that will randomly stick open causing the codes. A sharp blow on the bottom of the gas tank frees up the valve. I suspect ethanol in the fuel is the cause. went thru changing purge valve and other parts before I found a clue to this on a PT club blog.

When I'm repairing several of some broken or damaged wires on the flight simulators, I never use that shield that goes on the end of the butane powered portable iron. It gets way too hot and it's common to ruin the wires that were just repaired by all the extra heat being applied. To be on the safe side, I always used a regular electric heat gun ( like one that Master makes), and shrink the wires with the heat gun. The heat gun is way more controllable concerning its heat and I never had one of the just repaired wires open up again using one of these heat guns.

Being a Chrysler dealer tech, i figured it out pretty quickly when Eric mentioned doing a visual inspection. That's just one problem i see, the others are that the core support is weak, and bumping into a tall curb can bend it back into the auto trans. That's where a second problem comes in, and Eric already knows what that is~ The pcm gets smashed into the trans. If the car's lucky, the wiring harness gets pinched and damaged. Worst case, the pcm gets damaged. It mystifies me why Chrysler thought that was a good place for the pcm. The evap problem, i bet it may be a sticking switch. My 04 Neon R/T has the code for the switch being stuck closed. Gonna be dealing with that soon, as it is annoying to have to shake the car to get the last couple of gallons of gas in(For those who don't know- the vent switch automatically opens the vent when you pump the gas into the tank, having it stuck closed does'nt allow the tank to vent air as the gas displaces it).

I have a suggestion Eric. If you put a little tubing on each jaw of your alligator clips on your soldering jig, the clips will not bite into the insulation of the wires being held. The insulation becomes soft with heat and can be easily damaged from the alligator clips. Just a thought. Love the videos. Would like to see a video tracking down a data signal line on the ECU.

Good video. Thanks for including more details, tools, diagnosis, jokes ect. The videos are getting better I think and your attention to detail is commendable, as you say "leave everything the way it was", a lot of guys cut every corner. Most importantly, isn't the ice cream shop opening soon? Lmao

As a fibre optics engineer I know that Kevlar (or aramid) will definitely blunt your scissors but when I got Kevlar scissors they are absolutely the dogs danglies! I’ve had mine several years, get used everyday and are still as sharp as the day I opened the box !!

I'm only 5 minutes in but that "repair" job to the bumper right in front of the loom might be a clue as to what happened .... Haha loving all the videos Eric! Keep it up! (Not limp) :p

Just a suggestion. When wrapping the Scotch 33, take the roll over the top away from you as opposed to towards you. The tape provides more protection when pulled tight

Almost spit my coffee out when you said quality tools and japan in the same sentence, I do know they had excellent aeronautical abilities between sale tools and sail tools sailing through the air in the direction of the scrap receptical. Lol used them lots growing up and purged them as I aged for better tools but I kept some that were pretty nice

Eric, that little pair of lineman pliers are bad ass , my boss bought me a pair of the snap on truck. I NEVER would have bought them just because of cost, they will be your go to, good quality and the stripper blade stays sharp.

Wow, she did a number on that harness - that was a good one! Powerhouse Neon - lookout folks! We're comin' thru! :D I like that torch - looks better built than some of the ones I've been dealing with over the years. I keep buying these little ones that have a cigarette lighter inside (minus the flint and wheel sparker - Iso-Tip 7975, and other brands similar),and refill nipple on the bottom. I usually get about 2 years out of them (if I'm lucky). They're great - just wish they were a bit tougher. Went on Amazon last year and bought another one - thing is WAY too big for heat-shrinking - she'll melt the whole harness down, lol! The little ones have that deflector/shield there, but it's cheesy the way it attaches, and is prone to failure, so I never use it. I'm surprised you don't use automatic wire strippers. I can't even use manual ones anymore. It's so fast - just squeeze, bam, stripped! I've had a Vice-Grip brand one (might have grabbed at Lowe's of all places). Only had to make one minor adjustment to it in 5 or so years, and they get used ALOT. www.amazon.com/IRWIN-VISE-GRIP-Self-Adjusting-Stripper-2078300/dp/B000OQ21CA - the thing is awesome.

You're videos are my main source of entertainment. While I'm on leave of absence from a major airline. I'm a 58 year old Airline Mechanic probably about to get furloughed. I owned my own auto repair shop from 1988 to 2004, when I sold it and got out of So. Florida. My contingency plan is to start working on vehicles again, probably for an independent shop. Do I need my head examined? BTW you got all the cool tools. Love that Autel Scanner.

I like that Super 33 tape too, I’ve also been trying that Super 88 also. The Super 88 is some tough stuff though, and if you’re doing a lot of taping it’ll test the endurance of your hand muscles.

I think he meant the other tape he used was Scotch Super 88 (66 ft. rolls). Not positive though... Eric's videos are so informative, I watch them even though I own a Honda that is operating fine. I learn a lot of procedures that are beneficial for working on, or troubleshooting any automotive repair. Thanks Eric for your time and knowledge.

Maybe a piece of bent rebar sticking out of a broken parking curb. At least the wires weren't dragged. Who makes the heat shrink crimps? By the way I bought that Astro light from your store. I have long admired that thing. A pricey bit of tool, but what could be more important on any job than being able to see. This thing has applications that go far beyond automotive. I was not disappointed when I got my hands on it.
