In this video I bring you along as I have a look at a Dodge Nitro that came in with a customer complaint of "my turn signals don't work when my headlights are on." Ummm ok... sounds like your typical bad ground to me. Let's have a look see. -Enjoy!

Oh no! A cliff hanger! Will the bulb be installed? Will Eric find one in stock? Did NAPA sponsor anything? Did we clean the brake light holder with brake clean? Where is the mysterious Mrs O? What did the scan tool say? Did the brake light find true love? I can’t wait for the next episode of _As the Chrysler Turns Left._

I had a buddy who was a Deputy Sheriff and few years back their team all had Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep products in their last vehicle purchase in a high salt state road use area. And interestingly almost all had them start having squeaks-rattles-bad grounds right about the 35-40K mile mark. Similar light issues due to grounds. Always fun to watch your diag/repair vids. Corrosion is a tough battle - you work against it well.

Man, I sure don't slither like I used to. I envy these guys who can still get up and down easily - or who have a lift and don't need to. I got stuck on a newer Dodge trying to "upgrade" the reverse lights to bright LEDs. The body module does not like that and shuts you right down. The trick is to tap into the trailer wiring harness. Works like a champ!

Crimp and solder was what I was taught in the USAF. It is the most physically and electrically sound way to do any wire repair.
@Chaddz3
@Chaddz3 2 года назад
I used to work in the wiring harness industry where we would build wiring harnesses for Caterpiller and John Deere. They actually specified in the blueprint that all connections using crimp non insulated terminals had to be soldered. The only terminals that did not have to be soldered were wing style terminals that were installed using a bench press applicator and the terminated wire had to pass a pull test of X number of newtons based on wire guage without failing. any terminals put on by hand had to be soldered. Most ring terminals that we put on were usually solder dipped after termination.
@utidjian
@utidjian 2 года назад
@T.J. Kong The usual reason for using crimp plus solder (c+s) on automotive stuff is the crimp gives you solid mechanical connection and solder gives you a solid electrical connection... they are the two things required of a connection that arent the same thing. The added factor of automotive wiring is that the wires when stripped of insulation are almost universally bare copper. In all aircraft wiring I have worked with the wires are plated (some people call it "tinned" but it is not like the tinning one does with a soldering iron.) The plated wiring does a much better job of forming a good electrical connection between wire and connector than bare copper and connector. I understand why aircraft don't like the combination but there are plenty of places where they use solder instead of crimp connections of wire to terminal. Usually solder type connectors are used when the design spec wants a lower maximum voltage drop. It is not only that one needs "good enough" ratcheting crimpers. Just as important is how well made the dies are in that crimper. Then there is adjusting them properly for the gage of wire and type of connector. Soldering will cover up a multitude of sins in that respect. Most important in this situation is context: Environment, what is most important electrically, and expected service life. In this particular case the c+s repair that Eric did took into account all three of those factors.

There's only one vehicle that I've up-graded to LED bulbs in as they are low current draw, and that's my garden tractor. Prior to the LED up-grade, the 1156 bulbs would last a season before shaking an element lose. Since the LED's we're on the 4th year, plus the light is cool white instead of the sickly incandescent pee yellow.

In the world of military power electronics no current ever flows in the chassis, a return wire is always run back to the common return point source. Sub assemblies are bonded to the chassis via a "green wire ground" for safety but everything has to function out of the chassis or cabinet. That way we don't count on rusty nuts, bolts and mechanical structures to carry current. It's also one of the reasons a "jeep" costs $500k..... always enjoy the tech content and the banter....... 73 from Boston

I remember in the later 70s I had a Ford truck (not pickup) that started cooking its battery a night, meaning whenever the lights were on. Every time the lights were turned on the alternator voltage would start increasing to beyond my gauges ability to measure and got high enough to cause the battery electrolyte to boil. At that time, Ford used an external regulator for their alternators that were usually mounted near the radiator. The ground strap between the cab body and the engine block had gotten loose and corroded to the point that electricity could not flow through it. So every time the lights were turned on the started grounding through the regulator. That cause the regulator to mess up because of the backward flow of electricity and started increasing the alternator voltage to push electricity through the regulator to ground. That meant there was a feedback loop that with the regulator's need for a ground being messed up by the lights grounding through the regulator. Built a new ground strap, replaced the battery, tightened everything up real good, and everything started working like it was suppose to.

While I always preached testing when I was teaching, when you have markers/turn signals that go out with the headlight on, I think it's way above 50% related to a ground problem.

Keep up the great work Eric, we seem to think alike on a lot of concepts. I have a bad star washer habit, I worked in boat manufacturing and armored vehicle production and every ground wire and many power connections had star washers on the connections, almost always between the connector and the vehicle chassis, I have a good selection of star washers on hand for quick upgrades. The fact that they can cut right thru paint and give a good solid chassis ground makes me happy. Watching you use down home logic to resolve issues makes me want go break something so I can fix it... Have a good one man, love your videos!

Hi Eric, Your videos are just awesome. I have watched many of them many times and learned a lot. I have also bought a lot of your kit. Would love to meet you someday but i know you don't like people from You Tube so just keep watching and you keep making. Allister
