In this video I bring you along the process of tracking down a vibration in a Toyota Sienna AWD minivan. I thought it may be in the driveshaft but come to find out I put a driveshaft in this vehicle about a year ago. Hmmm.... -Enjoy!

Legit man within a week and a half I had a brand new shaft at the shop ship directly from their supplier. And I was blown away at the quality of it and the fact that they use Spicer u-joints in it. I don't know who their supplier is but it looked pretty solid. They paid shipping both ways and the whole deal. I was pretty shocked considering it wasn't their drive shaft to begin with but thoroughly impressed with the quality of the new one. Hopefully they keep that supplier around for a while.

@South Main Auto Repair LLC 4:40 You are correct we don't lubricate those. The supplyer is supposed to. It's always feels weird when you see someone work on a vehicle you used to help build. Just a quick suggestion, If it's 13 though 16 year check the starter. We had an issue with the braided cable arcing onto the fuel line directly below and would melt though it. The fix is a rubber boot over the cable post.

It really does make a big difference, I have people come in the shop all the time with vibration issues with after market wheels not hub centered and or improper lug nuts. People will get annoyed too when they ask you to install aftermarket wheels and then you tell them they need a whole new set of lug nuts, I’ll work on them if they already have improper nuts, but if I’m going to be installing new wheels I won’t install them without the proper lug nuts because of the liability and potential vibration issues.
@TonyRule

Much worse when there's a smaller wheel pilot than the hub spigot and the radiused back edge of the pressed pilot hole in the wheel sits on the outside face of the spigot with the nuts barely engaging any thread on the studs. I've seen that and the car had just passed inspection - literally - drove less than 100ft to get tyres because they were worn - not because the wheels didn't fit the car. I think I still have a photo somewhere. My eyes nearly popped out of my head.

@charlesdavis9755

Fun fact if you have a 1970 Chevy Nova SS with original wheels. The original SS steel wheels are lug centric and not hub centric. If you try to balance by the hub, the holes are so far off the the wheels wobble on the balancer. They have to be balanced off of the lugs. I searched and could only find one shop close to home that had a balancer that used the lugs. Everyone uses hub centric balancers since all modern wheels are made hub centric. Special thanks to Joe at Speedway Tire. Also, thanks to you, Eric for another informative video. Keep 'em coming.

You're correct Mr. O! A wheel with a proper sized bore is called "Hub Centric". They are called "Nut Centric" when the center bore is too large and the lug nuts create the clamping force as well as support the weight of the vehicle. You're also bang-on with those Toyota style nuts. When used in this manner on a non-OEM wheel, they are only meant to be temporary like with the included spare tire. It's crazy how many wheels I see come in (even from another one of our stores) and it has the incorrect mounting hardware.

It’s fairly common for aftermarket wheels to be fitted lug centric instead of hub centric. I had a 05 GTO that I put some aftermarket wheels on and had to use hub rings that were sized to the hub and the wheel. Mine were made of aluminum. I never noticed a problem when I did not have the rings installed. But once I realized the rings were needed, I installed them.

This was interesting and it just goes to show those that don't know that there are so many different resonant frequencies that different components of the car can manifest when they are not concentric or are a rotating assembly that is worn out. Resonant frequencies and how they manifest in vehicles is a lot of the car repair industry diagnosis. I use similar wheels like that on my wife's car for the snow tires. They're only on for a few days at a time when the weather sucks, and I check the torque on them every couple of days. When I install them, I hand-thread the capped acorn lug nuts on and then tighten at 90 degree intervals to try to keep the wheel as centered as possible. It's been good overall with no discernable vibrations.

I've been having this problem in a used Sienna AWD Limited I just bought. Now I know where to first look and evaluate when I get it up in the air. It smooths out at times. But on acceleration, the steering wheel begins to vibrate sometimes pretty radically. If it was a cv axel in the front it would minimize if not stop because there would be little torque applied. It does not subside when I back off the throttle. Which raises my suspicions it's what you just addressed. The drive shaft area. Thank you. You're the go to man, I am subscribing to your channel. Your diagnoses on the Cam positioning plate on that Buick was wonderful. Keep up the great informative work.

Good call on the lug nuts Eric - one thing to watch, specially on Honda (and I believe Subarus) is that the OEM is actually a "acorn" which has a spherical seat lug nut and most of the aftermarket wheels we encounter have tapered-conical seats. On steel wheels, it isn't the end of the world - sometimes over-torqueing the lug nuts will "crimp" the steel, but usually it is fine. But on aftermarket alloy wheels, the cheaper ones without the steel inserts for the lug nuts, the spherical lug nuts destroy the soft aluminum tapers. -Just something to note!

Yeah the shape of the contact surface is super important, because that is what ensures that your wheels don't fall off. The friction between the nut flange and the wheel is what keeps the nuts from spinning off.
@keepingdistance4404
@keepingdistance4404 2 года назад
Ball-seat is used by Honda, VW-Audi, and Mercedes. They are rounded. Conical seat is straight. Improper surface contact provides no retainment torque. These Toyota mag-shank lugs (dual purpose) have a conical seat because the spare wheel is steel.

I think it is really smart that Dorman has the savvy to c 664,000 subscribers to one of the BEST RU-vid channels on car repair and then take the initiative to develop a dialog with one of their fiercest critics. I mean u just hammer them every time. We have to use Dorman stuff, and a lot of it works ok. Ever buy a lug nut? The electrical stuff is horrible. But it seems they r watching and listening. If they would just cull their suppliers and switch to the ones that the OEM people use, maybe we could buy a sensor or module that worked longer than a month. And when and if they give u a well greased driveshaft that fits, buy twenty of their lug nuts and put them on that sweet little Sienna. And then tell your 3/4 of a million fans that Dorman isn’t the worst thing since hemorrhoids. I have watched every one of your videos since day one When I did a re stud of a Toyota aluminum four cylinder, I used your Rav Four videos exclusively. The car still runs great. Thank u Eric!!

Eric, The wheel balancing reminds me of the mild adventure I had with my flat tire and spare donut this past Wednesday, 2/9/22. It starts with finishing walking the dog past my car and seeing the right front tire completely flat. Change it over to the donut but don't notice it being very low until I get to Costco. (Gotta fill this up now.) Costco fixes it fast and I put it back on. It is in putting the donut back into its location that I notice the tire repair plug which, thanks to you, I now know what it is. Watching SMA videos has helped me to identify crap in my car. 😂

I’ve only ever heard of it being called hub centric or lug centric. I also saw the lugs wear through the holes in the wheels and the shoulder holding the load. Excellent video as always. Have a great weekend with Mrs O and the kids!

In the auto world they are usually described as "hub centric" and "lug centric." Just jargon, I suppose. Hondas have been hub centric for at least 3 decades now. I bet it has been a lot longer than that.

The first driveshaft you bought was a reman, A1C during the pandemic(just about all the A1C remans produced in 2020 to early 2021 are junk doesn't matter what part they are), this was bound to happen. As for NEW complete driveshaft assemblies just about anything for this sienna is either a DORMAN, or if you have money to burn the OE. There's about 4 large 'manufactures' for this driveshaft you'll actually run into but they're all produced by DORMAN.

First off, that was a good tutorial on lug nuts, wheels, and hubs! Good job! Secondly, I didn't know CV joints were used without boots. I couldn't make it out, but I'm sure there had to be some kind of seal in there. Given the geometry (where the CV joint pivots and how it slides), it would be super interesting to see the seal and how it works. Great video!

Dorman tale. '08 F150, the HVAC "blend door actuator" failed. (For the record, it is not easy to replace, as it is buried pretty deep in the dash.) Replaced it with a Dorman from The Zone; it stripped its gears at both ends of the temperature range, even after the computer did the "relearn" sweep multiple times. Replaced it under warranty; second one did the same thing. Got hold of Dorman tech support and explained the problem. They said to pull the fuse, wait 30 seconds, plug the fuse back in, and the computer would do the "relearn" sweep, and this would solve the problem. I replied that I had already done that multiple times - with two different copies of the part - and that I just did it again because they asked, and it didn't help. Dorman Guy said "That's strange, that should have worked." And had nothing else to say, and did not reply to any further emails. I returned the second Dorman to The Zone and got the OEM part from RockAuto, and it worked perfectly. Now, as a home gamer, I don't really know how to put a monetary value on my own labor, but I damn-well spent more than $20 in time and frustration replacing that dumb thing three times in an effort to save $20 buying the Dorman part over the OEM.

Had a all wheel drive 2000 Explorer that had the front drive shaft joint go out while we were coming from visiting family. Talk about the shakes, we had a little over a hour to reach home with that drive shaft shaking the whole car all the way home.

Our mechanic when though three cv axles on our Sienna both “new” parts failing causing the van to shake wildly the 2nd replacement caused the wheel studs to get served off and by the time we got stopped on one was left. We were 300 miles from home our guy paid for tow, the hotel, and the new hub/bolts so we could make it home.
@richardcarlson3627
@richardcarlson3627 2 года назад
Wheels, whether steel or aluminum, should never just rely on the studs to support the vehicle loads. The hub is intended to not only "pilot" the wheel for concentric fitting, but also to support radial loading. Without a hub sharing in the loading, the studs are in tension and shear at the same time, possibly contributing to failure.
@CB.5
@CB.5 2 года назад
Please don't make shit up. there are plenty of OEM wheels that are not supported of the hub.
@simonsms410
@simonsms410 2 года назад
It is a bolt connection, not a pin connection. With the clamp force from torqued wheel nuts, the question is if there is any shear force on the studs.
@BrianFullerton
@BrianFullerton 2 года назад
@@CB.5 And the OEM likely did the engineering on number of lugs, sizes, material types, and type of lug nut seats . Which an aftermarket delete of any of the features may or may not have taken into account as part of their modification. That said "never" was too strong in Richard Carlson's OP. But he otherwise makes a reasonable point and it is a stretch to accuse that he is making shit up.
@eo691
@eo691 2 года назад
@@BrianFullerton the clamp load of one stud and nut is roughly 5 tons on a 5 lug wheel is 25 tons of clamp load total, that combined with the wheel mount face and hub/rotor face being the surface that actually holds the wheel on means people who don't understand the whole engineering set up should not say things that are false
@richardcarlson3627
@richardcarlson3627 2 года назад
I stand corrected… there are instances where wheels are solely clamped and supported by the wheels studs or bolts, mostly cars. They are typically overdesigned for the intended loading, whether that be tension or shear. That being said, trucks are more likely to rely on both hubs and studs for wheel mounting.

Even only having months of experience in the field I could tell those wheels wouldn't work very well with those nuts. About half the people who come into my shop have a different set of nuts for the winter wheels, and the rest at least have hub-centric wheels so it doesn't matter as much. But the slack on those would have me writing a bunch on the work order before I handed anything back. haha Also that buzzing would drive me insane. I'd be pulling that door apart in no time if it was my own vehicle doing it. I already ripped the dash apart in my Camry because it buzzes sometimes. Still can't pinpoint it, so I think there'll be lots of foam getting taped into it.

I'm glad that Dorman is stepping up to the plate and helping you out with this one. I can't help but wonder how you would have fared if you didn't have your contact at Dorman, though. I'm very skeptical mostly because I've been burned by them in the past, the effort to get paid back for having to replace their failed part under warranty was not worth the time and headache in some cases. Not too unlike aftermarket warranty companies now that I'm thinking about it...
