52 yr old grandma here! This is my son's truck I lost him in 2019. I've spent 2 winters with no heat because none of my mechanic friends wanted to break the dash because of sentimental reasons. Thank you for the video! I did it myself aside from someone disconnecting the ac lines and helping me move the dash! Took me about a total of 3 hrs. I had to take a few breaks. You guys were great! By the way,,, I did NOT break the dash 💖

I'm officially feeling a little less manly as this took me 12 hours (although I did have a few trips to the auto parts store, but still…). Sorry to hear about your son - I hope his truck runs forever for you!

10 MM 8 MM T20 torx 7 mm 13 mm Phillips Flat head AC Line remover sizes 5/8” and 1/2” Was making my tool list, I figured I’d share. I already did this a couple years ago and asked my dad if I should swap out the evaporator while I was in there. He said if it ain’t broke, don’t change it. Later on that year, it started leaking in the cab. So I definitely recommend changing both when you’re in there 😂

I cannot thank you enough. This was my Bible as I did this and I looked at a LOT of videos. You've got a great way of explaining things. My toughest things were stupid but time consuming. The top part of the dash (the flap) was glued to the windshield - I assume the windshield was replaced and they used too much glue. That took me an hour. Removing the AC lines was no that easy as the space was cramped. Removing the heater core lines was horrendous. They were really stuck. Then the blend doors - ugh. So many trips the store(s) to get the right ones. Thanks for all your help. I would have never gotten this apart.

Fantastic video. Standing ovation!! I have a 2005 Ram 1500 I rescued from NJ and the A/C is not working. Given the neglect of the previous owner, I am considering rebuilding the entire HVAC system using OEM parts. Thank you for taking the time to share.

I'm about to do all this to my 06 today. I had already decided I was going to do this a few months ago because the heater core started leaking a year ago. Well last week I turned on the AC and it coated my windshield in oil so it's a good thing I had planned on replacing both while I was in there.

This is the best video on RU-vid for this job. I will be doing one for a friend this weekend and this will help immensely. While I have done many of these, none have been on the Dodge 1500, now i have an idea what I am getting into. I see way too many people cutting the lines and using rubber hose and I just want to yell at the monitor. Nobody has patience to do things right anymore. Anyway, great video, keep up the great work. You are doing a great service to others on here.

Nice run down. We just roll the dash onto the front seats without taking them completely out. No need to remove too much of the driver's side wiring.

Are you replacing the heater core or rebuilding the entire truck??!!??
@MrFullforcesound

Would love your opinion. A year ago I replaced my AC compressor and evaporator off of my truck at a local automotive shop, had the service done and they filled with freon, when I picked my truck and the next day I go to open my truck door and this weird chemical smell was i my truck, I cranked the engine on and turned the AC on and some strange plume of chemical mist came out of my vents! I called up the shop that performed the service and he had never seen that. Mind you the AC was working fine until then except the original AC motor was going bad had a minor leak hence why I chose to replace it. He refilled it with freon and sure enough a day later that weird mist and smell came out of my vents... I called him back and he said it could be my heater core going bad?? Anuy truth to this? or was something switched around on some hoses?
@NoNonsenseKnowHow
@NoNonsenseKnowHow 4 года назад
Yeah it could be a heater core, or the evaporator leaking. When you went back, was the systems still working at that point? Or was the freon low? Sometimes depending on the outside temperature and humidity level you may get cool mist out of your vents and that's normal. When the humid air outside hits and ice cold evaporator sometimes it can freeze the little droplets
@MrFullforcesound
@MrFullforcesound 4 года назад
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow Hi, when I took it back the system was moving air through that vents just fine, but not cold like it used to be, hence why he removed the freon from the system and refilled it and added a little bit more to see if that any effect, then the same thing happened the next morning. It wasn't cold here (Mid April) and humidity is nearly zero here (we live in San Jose, Califronia) so that's not the issue.
@NoNonsenseKnowHow
@NoNonsenseKnowHow 4 года назад
@@MrFullforcesound yeah sounds like it needs an evaporator core. There is both an evaporator core in a heater core in there. The freon goes through the evaporator core

Great video. I do most repairs on my 2015 truck myself, but I think this video might have scared me into letting a professional replace my stupid bad heater core. It looks like it might cost between $500 and $600, but it might just be worth it. Question: My AC blows hot air when I'm idling, but works fine when I'm moving. And of course I get a ton of coolant leaking onto my passenger-side floor, and then it drips down under the passenger door. Are both symptomatic of the heater core, or is the hot AC at idle something else?
@NoNonsenseKnowHow
@NoNonsenseKnowHow 6 лет назад
John Ingram it's honestly not too hard of a job to do once you dig in, especially if you have a helper. But yeah sometimes it's easier if you have the money to just pay and get it done! So I agree with that. The heater core would not have anything to do with your AC issue. That sounds like more than likely your system is low on freon
@johningram2153
@johningram2153 6 лет назад
Even if the AC is perfectly fine when I’m up to speed? Thanks for the encouragement. We’ll see.
@NoNonsenseKnowHow
@NoNonsenseKnowHow 6 лет назад
John Ingram yes, that can definitely be a symptom of low Freon do to a leak in the system. However could be a worn-out compressor or other things as well

It turned out to be the condenser fan. I found that it wasn’t turning at all. I bought a new one on Amazon for $50. Installed it this morning, and my A/C is fine now, at idle.

Wow, I am so happy to have had purchased the warranty cause this is a total rip out of the dashboard, which I could have done, but, I am NOT an AC guy. Dealer Replacement cost is over 2k and for the life of me I do not know why if one goes thru the trouble of ripping this out, why NOT replace the evaporator core as well. Mine is only 6 years old and I had to drive it literally a week with no heat and could not take it. I guess I'm just a poosay.

hey man love the no nonsense video, after watching this as i have an 03 ram 1500 that needs a heater core i have a question for you. if i where to carefully cut an access opening in firewall would i be able to unfasten heater core and slide forward into engine comparment to remove and replace? if its feesable i would make a cover to seal and cover accesss hole i cut out. thoughts?
@NoNonsenseKnowHow
@NoNonsenseKnowHow 6 лет назад
Erinmalyce hey, thanks for the comment! Honestly to give you an accurate answer on your question I would have to be looking at one in front of me. It really depends if there's going to be enough room under the hood and such. I think you would be better off just doing it the way I did in the video honestly. It's really not that hard once you know where everything is. And especially if you have a friend helping you you can get it done in a breeze. Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance, I just couldn't really give you the green light on cutting open your firewall without actually seeing one in front of me. Thanks again though and please give me a subscribe if you can. When I post videos I usually turn off the notify subscribers option unless it's a video that's really good and I think everybody can benefit from. You do have a great idea there though if you can pull it off clean

I had to do this on my 1988 Dodge dakota, it took about 17 hours from start to finish. I didn't have to remove the entire dash though, got away with just removing the glove compartment. I'm wondering if its possible on this truck as well, as it looks like the air box is in the same place on the passenger side. might be able to get away with removing the glove box and radio/AC controls.
@NoNonsenseKnowHow
@NoNonsenseKnowHow 5 лет назад
I haven't done one of these in a little while, but I'm pretty sure there is no way you could do that on this truck. Unless you were to cut open the h v a c box
