OKAY HERE'S MY TAKE ON IT: it's all about missed chances. Everything that happens is actually in the memory/imagination of the older woman in pink (the bride is her past self), hence why the fashion is so outdated and, even though it's supposedly a wedding, there aren't any guests - she doesn't remember who the guests were, all she remembers (or at least all that's important to the memory) is her husband and the awkward dance and the awkward band and the tacky decorations. So she's remembering her first dance with her husband and in her mind it's a pretty uncomfortable affair: not only do neither of them seem to be into it but they're both more interested in the singer than each other (the singer probably represents something else though I'm not sure what). Then halfway through the song we see the woman take a bite out of a slice of cake and immediately the scene changes - instead of getting up for their dance the couple seem to have a silent agreement, they get up and follow the singer through a portal. As established the closing monologue, eating cake here is a metaphor for taking a chance. The moment she takes that bite we go from her memory to her imagination, and what she imagines is her and her husband taking the chance she wishes they'd taken, and subsequently follow the singer off into an alternate universe where they didn't follow the same path so their ending is different. But of course it's just imagination, she never did take that chance, and so she's left behind in the real world wishing she'd accepted the cake (I think the monologue at the end is supposed to be her - opportunities are rare, don't let them pass by like she did). I'm not sure what the scrapbook in the middle of supposed to be about, or of the singer is symbolic of something specific, but the whole thing is about regretting not taking a shot that should have been taken.

Analysis (I know the video is silly, but I like doing this so onward) This husband and wife do not want to be together: like, at all. They feel awkward, are totally introverted, and are honestly marrying each other cause they are not sure they will ever find anybody else who will put up with them (peep the awkwardness). Other people know this, and therefore don't support the marriage (there is only one other person there, we will get to her later). So, they get the cheapest budget guy they can afford, because they just do not care, and have their first dance just to get it over with. For some reason, when they touch each other to dance, something is... different this time. Suddenly this man starts singing, and it is not at all what they expect (a metaphor for things sometimes not being what they seem). As this man sings, they fall in love, not with him, but with his voice. This is symbolism for them realizing that maybe what they have in common is enough to sustain a beautiful relationship and romance. The portal at the end (besides being a threesome lol) is a metaphor for them jumping headfirst into a new life, where they accept each other's personalities. Now, the lady at the end, is just there. She's old, and kind of hopeless in terms of ever finding love, so she sits and eats her cake, and watches other people fall in love. The monologue at the end starts: but the lady doesn't find it apply to her. She DOES eat her cake, she HAS gone skinny-dipping in the moonlight, she WILL lay in the grass to stare at the stars. But when she smiles at the camera, she let's us in on a secret: she is so glad her daughter has found someone who will do those things with her. And as she eats her cake, she remembers the other 199 pieces of cake. But this one is the best piece.

Props to all of the actors in this video. The singer and the couple manage to have an entire conversation just by staring at each other, and they do so many subtle things through expression and body language to progress their characters’ inner dialogue. And the woman who eats cake did an excellent job of making napkin folding and sitting in a chair look compelling and intriguing. I can feel the monologue both speaking to her and being said by her to me. Amazing video, 10/10

Okay here's my interpretation, right or wrong it doesn't matter that's not the point. Dodie isn't the one singing. The guy is just using her name to be a reminder to the couple of the past, and a glaring problem (the ex) right in front of them, both literally and metaphorically, which is backed up by their uncomfortable reactions to the performance. The entire song is passive aggressive, saying that even if she's not there (its obvious to the couple that the person 'singing' isn't dodie) that her presence will still be there (the song). Dodie is infact the woman eating the cake; reminiscing of what she wished she had done (confronted them), which is objectified by the cake, which when the monologue begins makes her view and feelings more apparent, another element of her underlying feelings not fully being shown. Potentially, she hired the 'band', which makes sense as the couple seem confused and she is the only other person there, as a way of getting her own back without directly hurting them, emphasising that she feels she is the better person, which is shown by the lyrics 'You two get along', signifying to us that she is letting them do what they want, albeit begrudgingly. Lastly, the fact it is a man singing is not only odd, jarring and a subversion of expectactions thus making it funny, it also gives a (possible?) subtle hint to the relationship- the bride and her were the ones dating, thus obviously making it a gay relationship. The lyrics 'does he smile like I do' shows this, as it is from a man's perspective, making the fictional relationship gay aswell. As a result, life imitates art. Dodie, this was beautiful. To everyone involved, well done on such a beautiful peace, something that no doubt people can find their own meaning of. I look forward to what lies ahead, and congratulations!
