I’ve just ordered one of these blighters. My first experience with synths was waaaaay back in 1980/81, my friend had ordered a Wasp synth, which we had loads of fun with… Then, lo & behold, out of nowhere, they sent him a second one… Temendous! I spent months, usually in a stoned stupor, playing with those things, not having a clue what I was doing but I swear it set me up with my current understanding of synths to this day. It’ll arrive tomorrow and I can’t wait to dive in. Great vid man, cheers 👍
Awesome demo! Beneath the A-106-6 XP this is my favorite Doepfer filter. And I also think Doepfer is a bit underestimated somestimes. They got some really wicked sounding modules out there...at an unbeatable price. And of course you could never be more thankful to Dieter for inventing Eurorack!!!
it sounds _really_ good with a mid/side decoder (BP to mid, Lp/Hp to sides). With the mix knob less than 6-4, the lowpassed signal is present in the left ear. Above 4-6, the highpassed signal is present in the right ear. Weird amazing stereo stuff happens as the knob approaches the midrange. As always with the Wasp, there's like a billion patch-specific sweetspots. Edit: never be afraid to play with the input level settings. It feels like the most useless knob on the module, but it messes with the way the resonance behaves, making it even weirder. Yes, that's possible. Also, the filter likes square waves with a bit of PWM, not necessarily 50%.
My Special Ed. black and yellow Wasp just came in today. Bought it pretty much based on this vid. So far, so weird. Also built my case into a cardboard box thanks to one of your other vids. Rock on.
You have to like this guy...He's not pretending to know what he's doing. When I bought my first Pittsburgh setup the instructions stated that experimentation was the key.
I think people just say that kind of thing about Doepfer because it's the guy who has been on the block yearsss before the general population caught on. Their designs for the most part are solid, and each module does it's job well. Power system feels lacking to me, but that goes for all Eurorack. If they had flashy panels, changed up their name in secret, more people would think they're the greatest module producing shop to have ever lived. Great review btw, this was exactly what i was looking for!
You've just made me realise I have low pass and hi pass at the bottom. Use the band pass mostly and I've never even looked at the lower section...thought it was just low pass there. I am a fool. Thanks.
I too bought this completely based on your video. Ordered the special edition one and can't wait for it to arrive. All your videos are awesome. Thanks for doing them!
Looks like an awesome filter to complement the Doepfer SEM filter in my setup. And yes, Doepfer makes great modules. Loving my basic Doepfer A100 system that I picked up to learn modular synthesis. Mine came with the SEM filter and I'd love to pick up the Wasp to complement it.
Ha! Last time I ever heard anyone say "Yah boo sucks!" must have been a few decades ago. I love the crazy little quotes I hear in your videos. Also interesting to hear what this module sounds like, I'd honestly never so much as once listened to it. Fun and interesting as always!
Thanks Christian! Yep, Doepfer are hard to beat - got a great collection of filters covering clean to bonkers. I really want to spend a bit of time with the A-106-5 SEM, and the A-106-6 Xpander filter...
That warbly aspect sounds like a cat purring to me. I am starting out on euro rack when my Arthurian boxes arrive . I WILL be getting this filter based on your demo. Doe-fer quad ADSR any comments I have the Waldorf NW1 as an oscillator waiting for installation
I just bought me one of these. The special edition. It was really the only filter on my list. I do hear they fry a lot, but supposedly the repair for that is fairly easy.
damn so delicious! A MI Ripples is on the way to me & I bought it with this sound in mind... I think I have to add the wasp. But don't you think it is really sad that the res got no CV? I'm not sure. (yeah, the spirit should be more on the bright side of thing, but maybe one could DIY... I don't know...) Thanks for this fine demo!!
What are you using to start and stop the sound? A standard MIDI keyboard? Or do you not need a keyboard for this? I really would like to get into this, but I don't understand a lot of things.
No keyboard, I'm just tapping the raw output of an oscillator going into a filter. Have a google about modular synths, and play with this so you can start to understand how it all goes together: petervandernoord.nl/patchwork/
great videos man. strictly speaking (and why should we not be strict...), exactly between the LP and HP, it's a notch filter. either side of centre, either the HP or LP is more heavily weighted.
I'm going to build my first modular soon amd this is on the top of my list of things to add. I'm thinking this thing 2 ocilator (maybe 3 to make some nice reese) an adsr (duh) vca (again duh) and what else? to get that 90s reese with the analog feel.
i agree , awesome filter for very little money. where did you get the different knobs? i see many people have different knobs on their modules. i want to do the same for a little excitement :) thanks for the demo man!
Hi, I have a wasp filter and seem to recall getting those weird sounds out of it , now I have transferred it to a Arturia Rack Brute 6, I seem to get it to do it, am I missing something?
Hey I know it's been a few years but these are showing up on the resale market broken; any tips on what to look for when picking up non working modules?
Yeah, it really is a keeper isn't it. This is one of the exceptions to the general rule, however. There's a reason most great filters cost 3 times as much as standard Doepfer stuff. Lame question: Where did you get those knobs? I've been looking for Davies look-alikes that fit 6mm but they're damn hard to find.
Thanks for the tip, I return to the knob question once every blue moon, but I never seem to get around to ordering. There's always some module I'd rather spend the cash on. Then there's the 6mm issue. I suppose the real question is where you can buy 6.4 to 6.0mm adapters en masse. The only ones I've ever found are in specialized guitar shops, and they cost a fortune.
Thonk sell these Davies knobs! I used them on an FCUK Continuum module. I also met him at a Maker fair, he seems like a nice guy. :) So, yeah, I'd recommend Thonk, all in all.
