Thanks Aaron for sharing your shark behaviour knowledge. Like any other predator out there kinda predictable until you meet the one that does not behave true to type ( and you’re in deep trouble). I remember we shat our pants encountering a shot-fish stealing shark in the Red Sea.

I find your videos are far better than National Geographic, you don't stage videos and simply show what is happening, which is very realistic. Nat Geo is big budget, and so they can afford big production costs, what they can't afford is to come away without a product, so if they are doing a show on a shark feeding frenzy they will create a frenzy, find a likely area chum it like crazy and eventually they get their movie. Thanks a lot for the video.

Sharks don't really bother me. I grew up surfing in Florida and seen plenty of them. They have never messed with me. It's the gators that I worry about. They are a top tier ambush predator! Gators don't mistake you for something else when they attack like a shark does. They see you as a meal. Nice mangrove! I'm so jealous of how big they are down there in the Keys. Close to getting two-fer on that one shot! Great content Aaron!

Geez those are some big mangos! I’ve never seen them school like that midwater next to permit! I’ve never had an issue bleeding fish and having sharks get too close. If anything I’d be more weary of cudas. With that said, the sharks, in Miami at least, sometimes let you fish sometimes they don’t. Sometimes they could care less and sometimes you don’t even have to shoot fish and they’re already harassing. My buddy had a bull grab a hold of his arm a few years back in 30ft while bleeding a fish. I try to read how they’re behaving first then make decisions based off that! Awesome video! 🤙

Great Video as always! I'm not much of a diver, but have learned so much from you. Especially in keeping the fish fresh. I have a question though about prepping the filet's of the fish. If you don't have a way to rinse the fish with salt water, do you just not rinse the fish and bag with paper towels? Do you rinse/wash the fish with fresh water before cooking? I filet my fish at home and don't have the salt water option to rinse.
@KeyWestWaterman
@KeyWestWaterman Год назад
rinsing with fresh water isn't a huge deal, I just recommend if you have to, do it right before cooking, and make sure its cool fresh water. if you don't have the option you can just pat dry with a paper tower after cleaning.

Great episode Aaron, the limited diving and spearfishing I've done off Vancouver Island sharks presented themselves only once and that was just off the Sooke Marina in about 60ft of water while looking for Lingcod, we had a small school of Dogfish come in and pester us for about 1/2 an hour. They would bite at our fins, charge at your face and then veer off at the last second, but too small to be of a concern. Then as suddenly as they had shown up, they were gone and we didn't see them again all day. Now, had we shot a fish and it was struggling as we brought it up, I'm sure those Dogfish would have been on that fish like ugly on an ape. I read somewhere that Dogfish are extremely tasty, had we known that we may have had a very different day of spearfishing!! Thanks for the video, take care and I'm looking forward to the next episode!! - Dave

I did get the spear back with some nice groves dug into the shaft.did you notice those two snapper had different color eyes. One had yellow eyes and the other had black

Love that you made a sort of “follow up” video on this, you’ve made videos addressing this same issue before and specifically addressed how to deal with the sharks when they are around (once you “claim ownership” of the fish close to your boy the sharks sort of recognise the fish isn’t available). This video goes further and just gives more footage to witness how it all goes down. The only caveat I’d say is, sometimes in the keys and we’ve had this happen many times, you get these pesky sharks that just won’t leave you alone while you have the fish on you. I think this video clarifies that the fish must be killed, brained and bled, as opposed to holding onto a constantly struggling fish the whole time which just keeps giving off distress signals. Am I correct?
@KeyWestWaterman
@KeyWestWaterman Год назад
has been highly requested! and yea thats safe to say. as I alway say multiple times, there are exceptions to all these "guidelines" some sharks just like humans can become desperate and may be much more aggressive when it comes to getting a meal. thats why its important to never let your guard down even though you get accustomed to diving with sharks.

Sharks ears pick up Hf vibrations and their lateral lines pick up Lf vibration. Their sense of smell is fantastic also. Pardon the analogy but in human terms they hear the fart before they smell it. Sound is the interpretation of the vibration they feel. As they come in range of the source of the vibration to investigate, the olfactory kicks in. Visually if another predator has the kill, they have to decide if the approach is worth the damage from an altercation with another predator. Some will assume the risk so you have to be calm and clear headed to take appropriate actions. Thanks Aaron for clearing up the mystery of sharks.

F.W.C. has been doing a wonderful job with combatting poaching as well as maintaining suitable size limits. I have noticed a great increase in mangrove snapper size catches since they increased the 8" mangrove size limit to the 10" a few years ago. I personally believe all snapper should be at least 12" inshore or offshore. The shark population is healthy if you ask anyone, the larger ones are migrating north it seems once they are strong enough. They still seem quite prevalent in the keys come wintertime.

Love the video brother, just moved to Orlando for school ab a year ago but started watching your videos and became obsessed with spear fishing. Have you ever heard of the rumpons they use in Indonesia for structure in deep blue water? I would love to see what it could do for the key’s ecosystem and maybe make some tuna more accessible for spear-fishermen. Anyways keep up the good work brother, I’m living vicariously through you and hopefully someday soon I can snag my own 10lb mangrove or mutton 👍

Another epic video Aaron, great to see you have good days and bad with the sharks, i know you have the odd great white down your way and hope you never bump into one, but here in NSW Australia they're getting more common, something that's always on your mind , I've taken too wearing a shark banz strap just in case. Be safe.

Is the boat drifting here? No anchor, right? And no one in the boat driving? Just cycling divers and awareness? Thanks! Love the explainer / full camera roll videos. We're all learning!

Thanks for sharing. I think different area will be different behavior. In Melbourne or Sydney, the shark will bite your whole bunch of fish on the float line, it is very common. it happened to me when I was bleeding a fish. I bought a shark shield device, but never use, worry it will scare the fish away.
@KeyWestWaterman
@KeyWestWaterman Год назад
its the same here if you leave the fish unattended. eventually they will figured it out and take advantage.

27 inch Mangrove........lol, I'm excited to get two that measure that combined. Because of that mirky level can you tell us what made those spots so full of life? Was there a bunch of rocks or coral heads on the bottom?

Love watching your content. Keep up the good work. What microphone do you use for voiceover? I just started my outdoor RU-vid channel (I do a lot of spearfishing as well) and it’s obvious the built in microphone on my computer isn’t gonna cut it. Thanks in advance.
