Great job getting the feet wet with some new knowledge! Never stop learning! I like that you’re finally getting into the room treatments phase! I treated my room first to make my crappy speakers sound a tiny bit better until I could replace them. I made all of my panels to save money. Enjoy the changes!

Thanks for sharing what you found! I wonder if the air vent was acting like a port and chuffing, since you do have a lot of subwoofer power compared to your room size.

Port chuffing is when air is trying to escape a port faster than it can smoothly. Air passes through my air vent with no problem. Imagine taking a measurement and putting your mouth close to the mic and lightly blowing on it. That's going to create a low rumble in the mic. You've heard the same thing when RU-vid videos are shot outside on a windy day. Same principle.

Very nice, Michael. I’m new to REW and room EQ so, like you, I’m not familiar with waterfall charts etc. However, it’s all good to help with the learning. Even the small improvement in audio performance seems worth it as you prefer the design of the GIK panels, so it’s win win for your room. 😁👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Thanks CableGuy TK. I'm certainly not one to dive deep into measurements but it is cool being able to physically see what is happening with your frequency response or in this case, the length of decay in your room.

They look great, still waiting on my panels and bass traps to arrive but I am more excited for the new 130 inch Stewart Firehawk projector screen to arrive. I’ve waited some years to go from a 106 inch motorized screen to a wall mounted screen. I will be about finished with my room afterwards, I think 🤔.

my 2 first panels i purchased came chipped.they were great.asked me if i wanted money off or to replace them.i kept them and put the money towards the next 2 panels i purchased.they have made a great difference. more effective in up grading the music quality than purchasing a 20 grand appliance upgrade. really! i found them to remove a bas node that just so happened to be right where the seat position is. so some tunes with bass on certain notes would " boom" a bit.the panels have removed that bass issue by purchasing 2 of the block 250mm version bass traps. great sound now!

𝙄𝙩'𝙨 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙢* I'm not sure where this will take you, but I'm certain you'll be pleased! During the video, I'm saying; "leave the diy panels and simply ADD the new panels". Then you shared you were getting more GIK absorption panels. Note; it may be helpful for you to limit the horizontal freq axis to 400hz and below... as that's the area of interest below the transition region. In my experience, you'll benefit immensely from a massive amount of additional LF damping. Then the true mind-blowing step is some diffusion. First, clean up the LF decay, then add diffusion. *it's all about settling time, for high performance bass, driver settling time is vital. The same is true for LF decay times, it's all about the settling time. Result; superbly delineated bass transient clarity. That bass must hit hard and dissipate fast. Thus clearing the way for the next hit. Every component in the signal chain is filtered thru the transfer function of your room's acoustic. 𝙏𝙃𝙄𝙎 is the rabbit hole to go down! All the best

Those don't look cheap, but i find it hard to believe they'd be a big difference over the DIY. Plus that many will be really expensive . Looks like Bass is the big issue.

Often, you can get very similar performance and sometimes even better with DIY products. Whether it's a subwoofer, acoustic transparent projection screen or in this case, acoustic panels.

Everything looks nice if you use only 200ms window and most of the waterfall below the middle of the available graph. Use 400ms and change the scaling to 90dB max and 40dB min and a lot more will show up regarding bass ringing, sustained note (more date means you can take better decisions over acoustic performance).

I did not expect to have any sonic improvements over the diy panels, as the GIK panels are build exactly like the DIY panels, but with a better finish and look. I have build my panels myself and it had created a significant improvement in my room, no more echo.

Try this, clap once loudly in your room and see if it echos. If the sound doesn’t decay quickly, you could use some absorption in your room.

I can use your advice, 2 months ago I purchased 2 SVS 12" PB 1000 Pro Subwoofers, They sound good but it's stil something missing, I was thinking of getting a 3rd PB 1000 Pro or would you sell and get 2 SVS 12" PB 2000 Pros?

Hey Andre, before you buy another sub, The first thing you need to do is to buy a calibrated microphone like the miniDSP UMIk-1 or UMIK-2 And measure the frequency response that you’re getting. Until you do that, you’re only guessing. What do you know what kind of frequency response you’re getting, you can then tune the subwoofers that you have for optimal performance with something like a MiniDSP 2X4 HD

Your room looks awesome! I really like how you have updated it. Just my $.02 too, but, our rooms are relatively the same size. And, I ended up putting too many DYI panels in that just crushed the sound. My room sounded dead and, after a few months, I removed all of the wall panels and just left the ceiling panels in, and at least for me, it sounded so much better. Basically, I just tried to get any slap echo out and after that, I was really happy with the way it sounded. So, as you are here, don't be afraid to experiment and thank you for sharing this with us!

Difference is your DIY panels were just absorbers. Whereas the GIK Acoustics panels in the video are absorbers with a scattering plate over them. A mixture of absorption and scattering prevents a room sounding too dead. Gives a good balance for both movies and music. My small room has 12 acoustic panels, 4 absorbers with scattering plates. 2 massive GIK hybrid PolyFusors, 3 small circular pyramid diffusers more for aesthetics, and 3 proper diffusers.

You say those GIK were damaged 🤔 didn’t it take you like 20 minutes each to unwrap them from the packaging 🥴 I’m callin you out Michael, you stuck them with that knife didn’t you 😂. Your measurements helped you about as much as they helped me. 🥴 You don’t have to be like Gene at audioholics. Stick with what your good at, have fun makin your videos. If we want measurements we can try and wrap our heads around genes content. Your gonna make that 15 year progression anyway, so of course we all wanna see it. More content. I’m always lookin for new music/movies Yes “I see fire” was a good one.👍 That was a huge reminder that I need to treat my music room.

No. The acoustics in your room are not determined by your speakers. Rather Your speakers are influenced by the acoustics of your room

I know this is an old video but what sounds better to your ears, the GIK panels or the DIY acoustic absorption panels? I am contemplating whether I should buy the standard GIK absorption panels OR the impression series. I would be grateful for your advice.

Basically the same. Not much difference in measurements either. It all comes down to do you want to spend the time to build them yourself or would you rather pay for them and have some nice designs. Absorption or “combo” panels would be dependent on your room. It’s probably best to have both. But I’m no acoustician.

My audio guy says that adding a 2% improvement can't be perceived, but if you keep adding another 2%, soon you'll have 20%, and that is definitely discernible.

I was curious myself so after a bit of digging on their website I found the following in their warranty guide: "Clean leather often, as frequent and gentle cleaning is easier on leather than less frequent, more aggressive cleaning. Cleaning will remove built-up dirt, skin oils and perspiration. 1. Protected (Pigmented) and Semi-aniline Leathers Clean with a mild soap and water solution. Use a mild soap with a neutral pH. Rinse with a clean, damp cloth to remove any soap residue. Do not use a soap product that is harsh on your skin, as it will be harsh on the leather. Always test the soap solution in an unseen area on the sofa to ensure that the solution does not damage the leather (no leather color transfer on to your cloth). Wipe with a dry cloth. 2. Natural (Aniline) Leathers Clean with only a slightly damp cloth. Do not use any type of soap on natural (aniline) leather. Wipe with a dry cloth. 3." Which makes sense as you wouldn't want to apply a leather conditioner to dirty leather. Personally I'd look to the car detailing space as car leather seats are common and generally more abused since they are out in the sun but definitely do your research before you try anything.

In my previous video I mentioned these measurements were taken with Audyssey off just to see what the panels were doing. After the tests, I did run Audyssey again.

For a system and set up of your size and quality you have no where near enough treatment. Deep Soffits 15 inch deep minimum. More rear wall absorption would also really help including the door. Ceiling treatment would also help massively. The reflections from the Sofa will be huge.

Baby steps sir. This is literally the first time I have really considered full out acoustic treatment. I have always had a few acoustic panels and that was it. As mentioned in the video, Phase 2 will be adding (4) Monster Traps and (8) 24" x 24" in the ceiling.

@@Youthman Cool. I think you would really benefit with at least tri traps in the corners but better still the deeper soffits with your rig. I always assumed you had false walls with treatment when watching your videos in the past. Sorry my mistake. I should pay more attention haha. You have a fantastic room and set up and it will only sound better and better. Filling your front wall cabinet should sound fantastic and would be cheap to do and easy to hide.

No false walls. My exterior walls are concrete block and is 13‘ x 19‘. The front cabinet takes up 4’ of the 19’ of the room.

I like your report. Because it is not only based on subjective perception, but also on measurements. Based on these measurements, you can see well whether or what influence the panels have. And just by the way, if I had these reverberation times in my home theater, I would be very satisfied! :) If you still want to achieve further improvements, then you could still treat the first reflection points on the ceiling with absorbers.

I noticed the back door being a reflection surface and wonder if you can add a long panel or two square panels going vertical on it to help out with the back wall reflection to the front? Can't wait to see the bass traps and absorption panels on the ceiling. I have a 19'x13' living room with my theater but isn't ideal since the kitchen opens up off of it from thr rear left. Only thing I can think of to kind of help with that is using a slide curtain to close it off when watching movies. One day I will have a designated theater room. 🤞🙂

Unfortunately those doors are hollow so it would be difficult to install heavy panels on them without replacing the door

Makes sense that there wasn't much of a difference but still cool to see! Have you tried any other seats to see if they sound different such as the one in the back left of the room in the corner where there's more panels now? I don't know how soon phase 2/3 are but in the meantime you could put your old panels behind the screen around your speakers and see if sounds better.

Thanks for sharing. Measurements mean absolutely nothing to me because it's about what I want/like to hear, period. If the measurement is great and I don't like the sound I'm changing whatever I need to get the sound I want.

I completely agree at the end of the day that’s what your ears prefer. I only share the measurements because to some they do matter and they do-based decisions on what they see in the measurements. I’ll try to provide content that is useful to the subjective as well as the objective consumer

100% agree. Most restaurants do their best to provide excellent customer service. But if they knew that Keith Lee was going to be reviewing the restaurant, more than likely they would be on their “best behavior “. That’s all I’m saying.

Hi I'm having a tough time deciding whether to buy the rp 260fs or rp 280fs since I'm going to be running them both in 100watts at 8ohms

Depends on the size of your room, your budget, how loud you listen etc. not so much that you are running 100 watts at 8ohms.

Your speakers will last literally for decades and they make one of the biggest differences in your sound system so I would go with the RP-280f - amzn.to/3iWrZ2j. For some reason they are currently $200 less than the RP-260f so that may help offset the cost of the X3700H - amzn.to/3zvNc9Y. If you never plan to go with a 9.2 setup, the 2700H may be the way to go - amzn.to/2V7jkSa. I always recommending thinking about your long term goals. Where do you want to end up and make steps towards that.

As with most DIY products, if you are handy, you can make non-fancy ones for much less. Most rooms benefit from acoustic treatment (either naturally or with acoustic panels).

I don’t know why people say these panels are so expensive in the audio hobby. I literally added two more 4” custom art panels from GIK and the cost w/shipping was a bit over $400. And if you don’t go with custom panels, it’s even cheaper. People spend way more for audio components, but panels affect the overall sound so much more, especially with lots of smooth surfaces. It can get expensive when buying 8-10 panels at once, but you can always add a few here and there to spread the cost. That’s what I’m doing.

Thanks gary. Someone else mentioned that as well. I haven't seen The Hobbit and only know a few songs by Ed Sheeran. Someone must have recommended this version recently to me but I forgot about it until I sat down to listen to music.

I have been looking at the GIK panels for several months now. I plan to buy a couple of the impression series panels and a pair of bass traps as my first acoustic treatment to my room. I built an Elekit TU-8600S 300B tube amp and a pair of CSS Criton 2TDX tower speakers in January and February for a winter project. The room is pretty naked so I think acoustic treatment will help allot. I could build diy panels but I wouldn't be able to cut the kind of designs in the diffuser panel that GIK can. I'm with you I really like the way they look. They make a statement like my amp and speakers do. Thanks for the video.

Never seen acoustic treatment in commercial cinemas that have wooden covers with slats or holes in them. Seems to me to be simply a marketing tool to sale expensive products 🤔. That said I have those type of panels on both side first reflection (cheap second-hand)

In commercial cinemas, all of the absorption and diffusion panels are hidden behind fabric. Higher end home theaters also do this. GIK and others make panels that are meant to be seen by adding an element of design.
