"Make Me Smile" and "Beginnings" are arguably Chicago's 2nd and 3rd best songs behind "25 or 6 to 4." Both of these songs need to be reacted to have even a rudimentary core appreciation for early Chicago. Plus these three top songs each showcase a different singer. (Impressive to have three vocalists with such immaculate tones in one band.) Then you need to hit some of the harder blues and jazzy stuff, like "South California Purples" and "Poem 58."

"Beginnings" would be a great choice for the next Chicago song. (long version). The "B" side of the single was "Colour My World". In high school, whenever "Colour My World" was played, all the girls would run to the dance floor screaming out "Oh My God, I love this song!!" It's a slow song but they could never wait for someone to ask them to dance. They'd all just sing it out loud on the dance floor with each other! I hope you hit the other two in the poll. But, nifty thing here for you guys to know, you got me to listen through early Chicago albums. I had forgotten, totally forgotten how "prog rock" they are, how diverse, how SKILLED. Chicago V is amazing. The thing is, I was young, 6 years old or so, when they came out. My dad had them on reel to reel. I must have really paid attention because I remember everything...bass lines, what the drum fills sound like, etc. It has been such a gift for ME to rediscover this. My dad is now 86, and confused. He knows he is happy to see me, but sometimes not sure who I am. To hear these early Chicago songs and remember him, it has been such a gift. So, thank you for your channel. And eventually listen to the other two, or one of the first 5 albums in its entirety. They are really wonderful.

Beautiful comment. Glad you had a Dad who played you Chicago. Now you can return the favor and play it for him. Some people who are becoming memory-challenged really respond well to music - it triggers the same part of the brain where memories are stored. They have used music as therapy and it’s helped people re-engage. Anyway, thanks for sharing. This is music reaction at its best when it can offer these gifts. Thanks ✨🤪 Oh, and the documentary about music therapy is called “Alive Inside” - you can search RU-vid for the trailer or even the whole film. 🥰

Apropos of Alex's comment, once I was in downtown St Paul in January. The temperature was about -15F and the wind was howling down between the buildings. I needed to catch a bus that ran once an hour and I had no idea whether I was in time or whether I needed to find shelter for like 55 minutes before I died. There was a Rasta dude standing at the bus stop and I asked him if he had the time. He looked at me for a long, long moment, then said, "Time be time, mon." Does anybody really know what time it is? “Yes, it’s 25 or 6 to 4.” As much as I love Chicago, which is a lot, their hits are the least interesting songs for reactions, at least to me. I hope you save space for “Introduction” off this album for your next deep cuts dive. It’s not epically long but has instrumental turns from trombone, trumpet and guitar, great bass and drum interplay, and winds thru funk, jazz, hard rock - and is sung by the late great Terry Kath.

I think the intro was a 12 Tone-Technique piece of this song! There's a top line above and then a chord stacking line beneath! We had to do a 12-Tone at Lancaster, Ohio High School in 1974.

In 1969, it WAS considered avant garde to put that piano piece ahead of the main song (regardless of a separate name, or not). Actually, I NEVER heard that piano piece before, and I grew up with this music, and one of my best friends owned this album. He must have skipped it when he played it for us...

I was 17 when this was released. Music was the center of my soul at that time. More than fifty years later, the moment the brass kicks in I'm 17 again. That is what I absolutely love about great music. It has a miraculous ability to transport me in time and space.

The hit single version not only cuts out the free form piano, but the rest of the intro as well. It starts rather abruptly at the time signature change that begins the main body of the song that includes the trumpet solo.

Just a fun, brassy pop song. Next should be "Beginnings," "Make Me Smile," and "Dialogue, Parts I and II" is pretty neat, although simpler. "Questions 67 and 68" is great, as well as "Call on Me" and "Old Days" from near the end of their initial brilliant run.

"Poem 58" and "South California Purples" are two for sures from this album. I believe they recorded this (double) album in about a week (plus some extra tunes), and sounds like mostly live band takes, with a few overdubs. Including the live Carnegie Hall release, four out of their first seven albums were double or more discs.

"Sirius" and "Eye in the Sky" is a good example of a song into with its own title. Sirius became the theme song for the 90s Chicago Bulls and got a ton of exposure. Might not have happened without its own title. By the way, how about some more Alan Parsons Project? I would suggest "I Wouldn't Want to be Like You. "

IMO, the best song from this album comes right after "Beginnings", and is "Questions 67 and 68". But the whole album is stellar. That said, the one (two?) song(s) Id like to see you hit next from Chicago is a Terry Kath classic: "Dialogue Pt. 1 (and Pt. 2)". This group came around the same time I picked up trumpet in the 5th grade. Huge impact on me!

I would say either "Begininngs" or "Make Me Smile" should be next. Both awesome. Funny story about "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" , the first time I heard it on the car stereo, I was momentarily frightened by the singer coming in the right mix and saying "People Running Everywhere." I thought there was some dude in the back whispering in my ear!

This is one of those albums that needs to be listened to in its entirety. "Does anybody" is the second cut that flows from the very jazz-oriented first cut "Introduction" - so the piano noodling makes perfect sense - it then flow into the third cut "Beginnings" - back when folks were trying to tell a story with an album rather that just a mash of songs
