Dr Ali, you and Dr Fung should be given Nobel prize. I as an engineer see and appreciate how logical your agreements are that uses physiological processes/biochemistry. I started studying human physiology in its gory details along with biochemistry + kreb's cycle
Very timely topic for me as I am trying to “ween” myself off heavy cream in my coffee. I have for last month or so taken my coffee black, which is a struggle for me, however I have started putting a very small pinch of salt in the black coffee and the salt is making the black coffee tolerable. For me the salt really seems to reduce the bitterness of my black coffee.
I add Pink Salt to my 2 cups of Black Coffee every morning even when fasting--I eat Carnivore OMAD--I totally Fast every Wednesday and every Sunday--My OMAD other days is within a 2 hour period
I saw someone post just today, that they blend there black coffee and it froths up enough to "feel" like it has cream in it! I am going to give that a try.
Dr Nadir Thank you for being part of this low carb movement. So much conflicting information out there. I really trust you’re well reasoned opinions in these matters. Thanks again.❤
Dr.Ali The content of your video and the quality of the slides are so amazing, there is no need for incentive to watch the next presentation. Thank you for this wonderful work you are doing.
The way I understand it caffeine promotes lipolysis by stimulating the release of catecholamines which can bind to the β2 receptor if not dominated by insulin AND by inhibiting PDE4, extending the pool of cAMP in adipose which increases the time that PKA activates lipases in the fat cell. (the data you provided with beta blockers clearly shows binding to the β2 has the greatest effect by far) It makes sense that exercising in a fasted state would be beneficial presuming there's an overshoot in ketone production, some of which aren't oxidized could be excreted through the renal & respiratory systems & if very low carb some would remain in circulation available for oxidation at a later time. A chicken or the egg question - some have claimed that accumulation of visceral fat causes reduced levels of adiponectin which causes the rise in ceramides, leading to insulin resistance. I haven't seen any studies suggesting that re-esterification of fatty acids produces ceramides or causes an increase in fat depots in the viscera, would be very interested in those studies if you have them available. Thank you.
I thought adding fats for my coffee helps me burn fats it turns out dangerous for insulin resistance people thanks Dr.Ali for educating us and guiding us for the healthy choices.
"Strong coffee, much strong coffee, is what awakens me. Coffee gives me warmth, waking, an unusual force and a pain that is not without very great pleasure." (Napoleon Bonaparte) Been on OMAD-Keto diet for over a month, gave up so much to try and get healthy, DON'T take coffee from me, it's my only pleasure in life now!!!! :)
Hello Dr Ali, another great presentation. You make an interesting arguement for black coffee consumption. I am currently keto carnivore and have been drinking coffee with 2 tbsp of organic double cream every morning pre-workout. I then undertake 3-4 hours of brisk walking with some intermittent jogging and explosive sprints. Since I am now fat adapted, I have found no issue with lack of energy. My last meal is normally by 6pm the night before and the only carbs I consume is 1 tsp of raw honey in warm water before bed. I find excercise in a fasted state helps break down viceral and subcutanious fat. I will try consuming black coffee before my workout. I have found Douwe Egberts instant coffee to be of high quality and taste, alternatively I use a high quality ground coffee, with french press, to retain the coffee crema. Please keep this type of content coming, as it is highly appreciated.
Good to hear form you always doc. Coffee is a drug and for some people is very addictive. Managed to quit coffee and it was tough and much better off without it... Coffee is a drug period.
have to go where my mentors lead me, 5 star vid. - the part about butter in the coffee i hear all the time. thank you Dr. Ali for the clarifications and insights *****5*****.
Thank you Dr. Ali. Really looking forward to your next presentation, as I have noticed a strange thing happen with me and my friend when we started High intensity interval training in a 20+hours fasted state and we always consume black coffee about 30min prior to our workout.. we have been at it for a month and then we hit a plateau and last week we infact put on about 300g!. Prior to this regime we were loosing a steady amount of weight about a kilo gram a week(and we haven't changed anything in our diet). So I am Really looking forward to your next video. :)
I personally found that coffee can help to prolong fasting; in my case intermittent fasting, up to 16 and even 20 hours on the weekend but often not without a price to pay, such as ferocious hunger after... If one doesn't have self-control, the coffee could be an appetite stimulator... Having fruits, like berries and ginseng tea does the same trick to my without the unnecessary side-effects…
I'd definitely say try to drop it pre-gym but if a splash of milk or heavy (real dairy) cream keep you fasting that bit longer so you don't snack I don't see a huge issue with it.
When I start drinking coffee after a few months off I really notice the thermogenic and mind-boosting effect that first week, but after that it feels pretty much the same as when I go for months having just water in the morning. How can we know if the benefits of coffee talked about in the video are similarly temporary?
Paul Saladino has a theory that stearic acid may help in mobilizing Omega-6 fat stored in fat cells, and mentions that cocoa butter has a bit of stearic acid. It would be interesting to see what the effect of drinking coffee with coca butter in a fasted state, when one is insulin sensitive, due to low carb or carnivore, would be. There wouldn’t be any research on this, but what could one reasonably expect?
I would like to know this, too👍I have loved eating the ‘Wild Foods’ organic cocoa butter and asked Dr Saladino if I could use that in place of suet/tallow when traveling (tastes great in coffee and easy to transport). He said the profile of suet/tallow is better.
Given how effective Clenbuterol is at weight loss it only makes sense that β-blockers would lower metabolism. I'm not promoting Clenbuterol use, just using it as an example of how the β adrenergic blockers/agonists can monkey with energy use and production
If you have a slow caffeine metabolism then you should probably avoid coffee, tea, mate, and other sources of caffeine. It will increase your blood pressure and disrupt your sleep which are bad for your heart, blood vessels, and brain.
Thank you Dr. Ali for the illuminating presentation. I absolutely adore black coffee, and I have relied on it to get me through my transition to low carb 5 years ago, and it has been an instrumental aid in helping me cope through my fasting periods. I am glad that your presentation sings the praises of black coffee. I would hate to have to give that up. With that said, my question is, to your knowledge, does consuming black coffee in any way attenuate some of the positive affects of fasting - particularly the process of autophagy? My second question regards something you brought up in this presentation. You stated that, within the context of insulin resistance, black coffee could exacerbate futile fat recycling. If that is the case, could consuming coffee the day before a fasted blood test, if the patient is insulin resistant, skew the results of a lipid panel because of the increased VLDL in circulation?
@@alphacause I would love to know the answer to this as I had elevated triglycerides and VLDL on my last lipid profile. I have been drinking coffee with cream/MCT oil. I am now skipping coffee all together to get retested in a week or so..
I always wonder, one doctor says coffee is not good for you, then the next time another doc say coffee is good for you, I’m like what, what, I came from coffee culture and I’ve never seen any coffee damage, don’t know why people freak out about coffee, just roast your coffee at home and prepare coffee from scratch and enjoy all the coffee rituals, but unfortunately, in western society, they treat coffee as a drug, and most of the time comes in packages and you don’t know how they roasted the coffee and what they add, feel sorry 😐, start roasting your coffee at home and enjoy your coffee ☕️
Wow, awesome contest. Dr Nadir: if I stopped my beta blocker I was on for 10 years will I eventually be able to mobilize fat from my fat cells or do the effects of the beta blocker last? Thank you!
Thanks Dr. Ali. I was hoping you wouldn't tell me black coffee was bad for me. I'd have to find another doctor if that were the case. Okay that was joke.
I gave up cream in my coffee and eating fat bombs when I found out I was ApoE3/4. It helped my situation somewhat (residual metabolic syndrome on a keto diet I call The Naked Diabetes) Going back on metformin helps more.
Dr. Ali can you please answer me, what about people who are metabolically unhealthy and consuming organic caffeine free coffee. Is it the same effect in that case to? Thanks.
Dear Dr Ali! This coffee would be a bit salty for me: I would use a pinch of salt not just a grain of salt to take this study as my guide. If I consume (as you indicated referring to the study) carbs with fat, the problem is no longer the coffee, rather the combination of the two fat and carb that might contribute to recycled fat into the liver. What fat? What carb? How much? Is it over consumption. Are we talking about the Randle cycle, that caffeine might enhance even further? 8 individuals? this seems like a nano - study..is this a study at all? I enjoy my coffee and no intention to give it up. LUV you Dr Ali! Cheers! ( sorry, I had to ask...)
If drinking coffee in the AM while fasting, is there a period of time when I should stop drinking coffee before I break my fast? For example....do I need to wait 1 or 2 hours between my last coffee and breaking my fast?
No scientific data but I usually get my last caffeinated coffee around 1000 and eat around noon. Decaf only after 1400 or so. That's about a 2 hour window on either side of my meal but I've also been "a bit hungry" or needed to bump my calories up and simply couldn't choke down more food and used heavy cream and/or coconut oil in coffee to bump up my calories and satiety shortly after that noon meal
Ron Nautical found out it takes five hours for the caffeine in a cup of coffee to be assimilated in the body. I wish Dr Ali would answer our question on this. I’ve been doing this
So why all keto gurus recommend bulletproof coffee to obese diabetic insulin resistant subjects? If the insulin resistance is in the course of healing, with state of ketosis and normal blood sugars, normal triglycerides In a keto adapted individual, bulletproof coffee may be beneficial? Could you develop more the idea of associating bulletproof coffee with beta blockers? Is it proved equally to all beta-blockers? Finally, I want to congratulate you for the excellent presentation and also for the sound quality. What mic did you use/external recorder or on camera?
set up is quite simple and straightforward. A Sony camcorder - with Zeiss lens and built in microphone close to the subject. Thanks for the nice comments. The degree of Beta blockade is different with different BB, and of course the dose will make a difference also.
500 mg of caffeine sounds too much for one dose, maybe even toxic...could you please check the publication again? In addition this group is very small, and consists only of healthy and young people. In my opinion such conclusions refering coffee with added fat should be made following a much larger study. Thanks
Ok, the energy expenditure was significantly higher in 4 hours. I'm interested in what happens further down the line. Would it rebound below the placebo group?
Does this apply if I have been fat-adapted for almost two years, at a normal weight, do IF 16/8 daily, and have been nowhere near pre-diabetes in at least four years?
Salamualaikum doc, just want to ask why do i always have a keto breath even though im not on keto diet, and it dont go away, i do intermitent fasting and biking everyday for about a year now. JazakhAllahu khairan!
You cannot take 60mg caffeine per kg of body weight can you? I read the upper safe limit for caffeine is 400mg but 60/kg is 4,860 mg What am I missing here (at 6:00 under the BAT image in the right side) You need another group. One that takes BB without caffeine. So basically you are saying don't eat when taking caffeine. When I go backpacking I use caffeine in conjunction with a caloric deficit but I eat a LOT of fat and there's no way I'm going to get obese doing this but what's the other risk. I am insulin resistant in general but when I'm hiking and drinking coffee I'm losing almost a pound every day and a half for two weeks at a time. What do I need to think about? I assume you dont need caffeine if your burning more calories than you are eating unless you just want to hike faster/further and it does work for that . . . Visceral fat is easy to put on but I would think that it's also easy to take off if you are doing what I'm doing. So my contention lately has been that Caffeine is better for those that exercise more than for people that are just trying to stay awake. If you are just trying to stay awake and not exercising then don't eat anything. Ive noticed that caffeine is also a good pain suppressor for my feet and legs while hiking. For your final question I am going to say YES emphatically. If you are doing a LONG backpacking trip and losing lots if weight and you get energy after 400mg caffeine you have to be burning fat that's a lot harder to do without caffeine. There are probably a few other drugs that do the same thing such as Benzedrine. How much caffeine do marathoners use? Backpacking is like doing a marathon as we tend to hike about 18-25 miles every day, day after day after day for weeks and sometimes months if doing a "thru hike" of a long train like the PCT. P.S. I hate black coffee :o) PPS I'm 65 years old
It’s very difficult for me to loose weight can you please help me and if I take carbs like unpolished red, black rice in a small quantity it helps me with my constipation. I have tried all sorts of diet but I m unable to loose weight, I weigh 81 kg 168 cms height
Hello Dr. I have been seeing your videos and realised how Important are LCHF diet. I have the following 3 questions: 1. How does high fat intake reduce triglycerides? 2. If LDL is not bad , what does get deposited in the coronary artery, in the case of CAD or that causes blockages. 3. Is it possible to unclog already clogged arteries in the heart due to calcification by consuming Vitamin D3 & K2? Thanks.
