The velocitor performed like it was meant to so I don't know why that should bother someone. Hollow points are not supposed to over penetrate, thats what the hollow point is for to expand and control penetration. So your statement is correct about no hollow point out penetrating the punch because if they do they're not a very good hollow point. Like you said it's not gonna happen. 👍👍

Yep, I wanted to test em for sure so I did the rabbit test with em, since that was a test of those rounds against another good HP and not the solid penetration top dog. I had to deliver what the people wanted here though.😆

I totally agree with Lance. the wound channel would probably be even nastier if you used a 20" barrel which is on my run of the mill Stevens and got at least the velocity that the box says ( over 1400 fps) making the cci round even more devastating.I understand the people asked for the test but seems odd to me they would want to match 29gr against 40gr to start with.

Tools, I know this is an old video now, but from my perspective, that's enough Punch testing. We know it does what it's designed to do. Personally I'm not a fan of max penetration and a skinny wound track. I want to see a fat wound channel and 12+ inches of penetration out of a 16+ inch barrel at 30-50 yards to see what it can do for hunting or defending a property against a horde of zombies at that range. I love your channel and really appreciate all your gel tests of so many cartridges. You do great work!

Looked like a big win for the Velocitor to me. Great wound channel, almost perfect amount of penetration & some good expansion for a .22LR.

I'll take a CCI Velocitor over a federal punch any time. Since when do we want our lead punching tiny holes right thru stuff? We want to dump energy into the meat, not cut tiny wound tracks right thru with minimal damage.

He shot the intruder in the legs, and he didn't stop, so he put the rest of the rounds in his chest. The guy stopped, fell, and then was pronounced dead at the seen. It would be nice at some point to see the actual power some of these rounds can utilize from a full length rifle test since no one is going to carry a charger in there pocket we might aswell see how everything would fair in relvent test for things like hunting .

I think Federal was pretty clever in designing the punch the way they did to make it an ideal self defense round for a 22 LR. I think they figured out that the amount of powder and the round being 29 grains along with the nickel plating is probably going to be the optimal amount of penetration you are going to get with a 22LR without making the overall length of the entire round too long for many 22LR firearms, and without over pressurizing it. This just may be as good as it gets.

Yep, hollow points aren't meant to penetrate too much, but the punch certainly is. I'm thinking out of a long barrel, the Velocitor might open up more, and penetrate less. Even though we knew the punch would penetrate more, it was fun to see the Velocitors ability to expand... So many .22lr hollow points don't expand at all, particularly in a short barrel. I also suspect the Velocitor may penetrate more with a short barrel, because it may not expand at all either. That punch is a bad ass little round, thanks for sharing. I hope you had a merry Christmas. I still wonder what would happen if you ground the tip off of a Velocitor, to eliminate the hollow point portion, along with some bullet weight... Light weight flat bullet with a decent power behind it seems to work well for penetration... Maybe the only way the punch gets some competition, but probably not worth the effort... Have fun!

@@ToolsandTargets I think one way is to remove the bullet once it's shaved down, and weigh it. Another way could be weight a complete round, shave the bullet, and weigh it again to compare the difference. Either way, everything doesn't have to be perfect, but I would make sure the bullet is at least flat. You could take it a step farther, and remove and weigh a unmodified bullet as a control to see how honest the 40gr number is, but we aren't too worried about exact science here, we are just having fun, and maybe learning a thing or two along the way.

Seems those flat nose solids in any caliber penetrate further than even a lead round nose! there is Herters 40gr target round nose, minimag target 40 round nose and some winchester small game and target round nose is about all I can think of off the top of my head lol! That Charger paired with those Velocitors seems to be a really nice combo! Have a good one! Punch still reins supreme on penetration!

it was a good video. on the subject of 22 long rifle and 22 short is a very capable ammunition. here in North Carolina it’s legal all small game and deer , Ferriel hogs, much outher game except turkeys, maybe black bears , certain birds. and water foul . my grandfather, father and my generation this was more than a tin can killer, it put food on the table and when needed protection around home and farm . in the hands of a good shooter knowing where to put that little bullet in a reasonable distance for many people it’s all they needed. it’s affordable up till the last few years cheep to shoot . but I keep a check every time I go to my local Walmart as in the last few months box’s of federal 325 round boxes and Winchester 333 round boxes with tax around 22.00 dollars limit of three boxes. if you can do that three times in three mounths your hitting on the edge of 3,000 rounds of 22 . i see in the price gouging gun shops the same 22 bullets 325-333 round boxes 45.00-48.00 dollars a box. certain 50 round bowed 4-6 mounths ago 35.00-37,00 a box. i for years always kept a good suppy of them and still do . use your 22 lR for legal purposes only. spot lighting deer is illegal and stupid to do because of costing a person up around 4.000-5,000 dollars with attorneys fees at the time of arrest your gear/ weapons will be seized and at law enforcement officers discretion your vehicle impounded, then it’s up to the judge if returned it sold at public auction. and that doesn’t stop your payment obligations , you still owe for the vehicle regardless. I would hate to be walking to work because the judge ordered it sold and the next vehicle passing by is the one I had taken. .y’all way to be spotlighters better think about that. nana and wishing well.

@@ToolsandTargets that’s funny. in our state it’s been a serious problem all my life. I live around 380 yards from interstate 77 . with the leaves off the trees in the dark you see headlights on and off from all the trees . even with a 1 in 10.000 thousand chance of hitting a car a momma and children it’s a chance I would never consider taking. many spotlighters are out drinking, driving and out to shoot something. no care or thought of the danger they are. iam glad most hunters here are responsible careful legal hunters . Too many people fail to understand that a longer barrel typically equals higher velocities. Higher velocities equal less penetration on hollow points, soft points, or generally anything other than a fmj.

Paco Kelly used to sell a tool called the Accurizer which swaged the bullet up a bit in diameter and put a shallow cup on the nose. It would be interesting to use that tool on something like mini mags and various other LRN rounds and compare results to the punch.

If we are talking about self-defense, I really believe penetration is the most important ingredient in .22lr. I will actually carry CCI Stinger, but considering clothes and bones, i think the sheer power of the slug is most important, and gives me curiosity to give the Punch a serious look.

@davidberry777
@davidberry777 11 месяцев назад
I know! Maybe you misinterpreted my post? My thoughts are around the difference between a solid slug (Punch @ 29gr) and a hollow-point (Stinger @ 29gr) in terms of total penetration when clothing and bones could factor in... To me, it seems to make more sense with such a tiny delivery mass, a chunk of lead that stays relatively rounded (Punch) would probably have a greater penetration to reach the vital organs than a flattened chunk (Hollow point) @@wyatt9k551

In all fairness the punch would suck to hunt with. Over penetration would be a real problem . I've used CCI products for decades with great results . The Punch seems like its steel core or something being it doesn't deform the slightest . So its kinda like comparing apples to oranges .

Should I be thinking of 22 Punch as the M855 of .22lr because it penetrates so well? What application would be best for this ammo? I always have been informed that the most effective ammo for defense is the load that penetrates to a certain degree, expands, and dumps all its energy into the target. If Punch zips all the way through is it as effective in a defense application? It does not appear to create much of a wound channel at all relative to the Velociter.

I wouldn't say it's the only factor but I think it is the most important behind shot placement. If a hollow point doesn't get at least 12 to 15" in this gel, then I would rather have the fmj.
