You just saved me over $300 dollars. I was considering the Ruger LCP .22, but after seeing this, I’ll look somewhere else. I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this, but you are the best channel for ammo testing on RU-vid

Tools&Targets is costing Ruger and CCI a lot of business with this video. Appreciate someone taking the time to do these comparisons so we know what to carry in our tiny tools. Expecting a .22 LR round to expand is a bit much out of a short barrel. If you've got to carry .22 LR, it sure seems like the penetration of the Punch is the way to go.
@usernamesrlamo
@usernamesrlamo 8 месяцев назад
I’ve had the LCP .22 for a couple years. I’ve never had a FTF or FTE but I have had quite a few light primer strikes. They get worse with lower quality .22 ammo. Because of this, I pretty much only run CCI Stingers or the Federal Punches. The LCP is an extremely fun pocket plinker BUT if I were using it for self defense I’d absolutely look into the available spring kits that will make the hammer and pin hit significantly harder.
@rodneyws1977
@rodneyws1977 8 месяцев назад
@@usernamesrlamoEverything shot in this video was ultra premium ammo. The light strikes are inexcusable on a new gun. I was curious if some of the failures were because the rounds were too hot. I have a Ruger Mark IV with a softer spring and shoot subsonics exclusively. No failures. I think matching the spring to the ammo could help here, but the light strikes? That’s on Ruger.
@usernamesrlamo
@usernamesrlamo 8 месяцев назад
Yes it’s on Ruger, they could have put in stronger springs. Premium ammo never completely eliminates the light strikes but it does make them much more infrequent. The aftermarket spring kits are only $20 or so.

The 22Plinkster did a video on the CCI Uppercut two weeks ago. He suggested not using the Ruger LCPII as it does have a short barrel. He did a gel test using the Taurus TX22 and did get expansion, but less than great penetration. He also tried using the Glock 44 and got excellent expansion with the 4" barrel. Penetration not so good. But I would still want to go with the Punch.

Second time out I had like 8 out of 20 light strikes with Winchester Super Speed but still ran fine with Minimags. I could have tried more break-in time but I want as close to 100% reliability if possible so I've already installed the full Galloway Spring kit and trigger. So far so good, I've only had 2 light strikes out of about 200 rounds. Overall I really like the LCP2 as a plinker or a light weight option for hiking in the woods.

It's sad when a gun company knows it has a problem, still wants to charge $300ish+ for the gun, and then not fix the problem by spending another $10 on better springs. The lcp22 should be a $200-250 gun tops as it is. I've had cheaper guns work way better right out of the box. Sad when Phoenix arms knows how to make a better micro .22.

@@Dontgetenslaved LOL, Yeah, I have an old HP22a and you're right, it was reliable for 1000s of rounds until something inside the pot metal frame broke. You're right about the springs too. I don't like having to do anything to a new gun to make it work but there are a lot of .22LR rifles and pistols that have light strike issues with lower grade bulk ammo. Why? I don't know, seems like they could all just utilize heavier striker or hammer springs. My Ruger LCRx .22lr runs flawless and you can obviously see a deeper and broader divet on the spent shells.

I'm guessing that the uppercut's low fps is a "design feature" that attempts to deal with overpenetration, being advertised or self defense it's one major concern about a self defense load. I'm sure the bullet itself would have expanded better at 1250 fps like the mini-mags but then it would also go through the target and possibly enough drywall behind it to make it into the next room. After watching this video it’s occurred to me that uppercut would do well in a 5.5” barrel. Id be very interested in a test with that barrel length. If I can find some I want try it in my 5.5” barreled single six. Good video sir.

Man. I don’t get to consume much YT anymore so I miss out on a lot of great stuff. I didn’t know you had videos out on the Uppercut ammo until I posted my video. Several of your viewers mentioned you by name in my comments section and that’s something I don’t see happen very often. I liked that. It seems we have a little bit of a crossover audience. I’ve been catching up tonight on your uppercut vids. I’m glad your results were similar to mine. The way you present your videos is 10 times more entertaining than mine though. Good stuff.

Appreciate that, brother! I was really hoping for this stuff to impress. Folks know good stuff when they see it, so I'm not surprised we have a lot of the same audience. I try not to let too many folks know about you though because if they see what a good shot you are, they might not come back!😉

The only .22lr gun I have is a S&W 15-22. I would very much like to see you test the CCI Uppercut shot from a rifle. Intuitively I believe it would do quite well even though the Uppercut is made for pistols. The only .22lr I would even consider for self/home defense is CCI Copper/Polymer HP's 21 grain, CCI 32 grain Segmented HP's and CCI Stingers fired from a RIFLE. But I would also like to see the performance of the CCI Uppercut shot from a rifle. I bet they would penetrate and expand nicely.

My LCP2 only consistently runs on round nose ammo around 1200 ft./s sign up. I typically carry Stingers in it, but it will run on CCI, mini mags, or federal, round nose, or ammo to that effect.

In 22Plinkster's latest video 4/18/24, he says CCI engineers told him that Uppercut was designed to expand in 10% organic gel, not synthetic clear gel. Testing Uppercuts side-by-side in both types of gel, he got the same results as here - 10.5" of penetration with no expansion in clear gel. In 10% gel, they did expand but only penetrated 9". For a defensive round, I'll take Punch's 16" of penetration over Uppercut's 9" of under penetration.

I like his advice to stagger the rounds in the magazine. Think about it though, my torso isn't even near 9" thick, expansion makes a difference.

@jesserast7631 Gel is not the same as a Human Body. 9" in Gel does NOT equal 9" in a body which has bone, muscle, fat, organs, etc. FBI says it must go at least 12" in gel in order to penetrate to vital areas in a body.

Brian, this was an entertaining test! Not surprised by the lack of expansion, though. The biggest takeaway for me is the overall sketchiness of betting your life on a rimfire round. Are you gonna tell the bad guy to wait while you cycle another round? Nope. Don't do it, folks. Centerfire is way more reliable.

Very interesting test Tools. You just crack me up B man, what an intro. I'm surprised you didn't keep the gloves on the whole time. The new kid definitely isn't designed with a really small, short barrel in mind. I wonder what it would do in a 4" or rifle length firearm. For a CCI round I'm really disappointed in the velocity, way to inconsistent, and the lack of expansion. The LCP 2 didn't impress me either. But that's the kind of backup someone might carry. Be vigilant and always be safe my friend.

From what I've heard, the lcp 22 doesn't run these slightly longer cased .22 rounds. The stingers are the same way. Even with aftermarket springs and triggers, reliability with these rounds is not guaranteed.

Nice. I want to love the punch, but they've just been inconsistent with my .22 pistols. Occasional stove pipes, failure to battery/feed. I'm using a Ruger SR22 and a Taurus TX22 Compact - both have the exact same issues with Fed Punch. Instead I'm just gonna stick with CCI Velocitor. Those things work great. Thanks for the content!

My tx compact doesn’t like the federal punch either, gonna try the aguila supermax considering it’s pretty much the same as the punch. One thing I’m curious about is the plain 22 bullets have always been deadly because they go in and bounce around. I wonder if the punch does that or goes all the way through.

I've seen several reviews that this particular ammo does not like the Ruger or the Taurus tx22 but other ammo feeds fine like CCI just what I've heard anecdotally. However I have polished all of my feed ramps to a mirror shine with flitz Polish and a Dremel bullet tip compressed wool bit and it works very well. The fact that Federal are flat nose might have something to do with it

This is the 2nd jelly test I saw…first one was with a 4” barrel and it did expand. But my takeaway was the thought of why would I consider the premium price when CCI mini mag hp’s would equal or supersede the new ammo. Always wondered why a true jacket was never made before. So far, not impressed. Thanks brother!

Very nice! Bought a case of Federal Punch when they first came out. With a brand new S&W 317 revolver did have about 3 that didn't fire on the first strike in the first box of 50. They all fired after I ran them back through a second time. Shot about 50 Federal Automatch and have not had a failure to fire since. Did notice to be exactly on target at 7 yards I had to crank the rear sight all the way down and only see about half of the front sight in the rear notch. May explore a new taller front sight at some point. Didn't notice the problem so much with the Automatch but only shot double action.

14:19 My glock 44 misfed twice in each of 4 mags with the uppercut, 😢. Same gun gobbles up Punch for breakfast couple hundred rounds no issue, ever. My Taurus TX22 failed to feed twice out of 4 mags with uppercut. It never misses with Punch! My Tx22 compact ran 4 mags of each without incident. Since this is my edc, I'm sticking with Punch, since my life could be on the line. I believe the problem with my glock and full size Tx22 is the low velocity provided by the Uppercut. Thanks for the Video! I wish I watched before I ordered 6 boxes of Uppercut based on 22plinkster review. 😭

You need a revolver if your going to carry rim fire ammo. I think the cloth slowed them down to below expansion velocity.
