We've had this Pulverizer attachment from Dirt Dog for a while now, but just couldn't figure out where to use it. But after driving tracks into the ground all soggy winter, the ground is now hard again and very rough. So we think the Pulverizer is the go-to attachment to break up all that rough surface and smooth it back out. Does it live up to its name? Find out in today's video.

I had a landscaping/hauling business early 80's. I used a pulverized to put the finish grade on a new lawn. Worked great. Mine had double rollers.

You can use the pulverizer after the tiller. Adjust the top link out so the back roller has a little more pressure on it. It helps firm up the seed beds a little

I used a pulverizer made by Gill for about 5 years doing prep work for sodding and seeding grass. They are a fantastic implement. The trick with them is to use your 3 point hitch hydraulics "actively" to help drop material into low spots and take the top off of high spots; which requires the operator to be looking backwards most of the time. Also, running in overlapping circles helps to get to level faster in most cases. I currently have two roller version that I just recently purchased. It is better than the single version in my opinion. Adjusting the top drawbar even one turn can make big difference in what your results will be.

☝️☝️he gets it…..cut my teeth in landscape and grading business with a 60” double roller gill bar. Hydraulic top link is a must if you are a perfectionist. I now use a Harley rake on a skid steer.

Had 28 dump truck loads of dirt brought in to build up my front yard. After leveling it out, i used my disk harrow and pulverizer to work up the ground. Did an amazing job and the yard is the smoothest on all my property. I guess I’ll need to do the rest of my yard now :)
@GoodWorksTractors

Heck yeah, I may be doing some of that this summer as well! Those results definitely give me more confidence knowing it can turn out well. Did you roll or compact it?
@bishopspyroworld8921

@@GoodWorksTractors i rolled it after i used the pulverizer. Then i used the pulverizer again but angled it so only the rear roller was touching to make a seed bed. When this video is posted to fb, ill post pics in the comments.

Great video Courtney. I have a similar pulverizer. It is great from leveling a yard. I always am looking back and watching the soil that is built up in front of the attachment and then lift the attachment in low areas to drop the dirt off. Driving in circles with this also helps too for leveling instead of just straight lines.
@blaiseboudreau1819

That looks nice and versatile. And I could see that being easily turned into a multiple tool. After a couple passes, the stakes could be lowered to dig a bit more. Then pull them out, and put a bar or beam to level and plane, maybe using the outer 2 stake slots as mounts. And after loosening, seeding, leveling, have a smooth roller to swap the rear spiked roller, and use it to compact the ground again. Ps, love the channel, all the information, demos, etc. And I don't even own a tractor. Lol but I've spent time around, and worked on a few.

Great old-school piece of kit. Before rock hounds and Harley rakes every landscaper brought a box scraper, York take and a pulverizer to a seeding job.
@brian_2040

I've used one of those. You can go forward and backward with out lift it. Also if you plant to be in soft ground mostly, I suggest a cultipacker instead of the roller. Also a hydraulic top link is the biggest game changer.

I had one of those pulverized 5' Land Pride single roller on the back. Used it for leveling new yards for seed prep, horse arenas, softball fields. But only on clean soil no grass clumps or sticks. Had used it in some rocky soil and pulled rock to end of rows, lift it up and make another pass etc then bucket up the rock for road and soil erosion spots on property.

I find you're videos of just driving the tractors around. to be some of the most relaxing visuals to be had on RU-vid. That, teamed up with the banjo music is just what I need to decompress after a day on the job. Makes me want to sell out in the city, and buy a hundred acres and a tractor. Thanks for posting. I've used these for 30 years and have a 7 footer with double rollers at present. I've also used one with a culti packer, it's better than the rollers. The best way to use them is to have your ground just about ready to sow grass seed, then use the pulverizer, sow the seed, then use the pulverizer lightly to cover the seed. They are also great at incorporating fertilizer or lime etc. into the soil.

Looks like the pulverizer would work great to prep for seeding a new area. After seeding you could use your dethatcher to cover up the seeds and then a roller to get great germination rates.

I have used a double roller Pulverizer for about 15 years. On my third set of shanks which are expensive to replace. I use it mainly for dressing my gravel roads after a couple passes with the box scraper. But it really excels with final prep of dirt before seeding. Bought it used originally. Just keep the roller bearings greased. My 3720 was just barely powerful enough to pull it. The 4066R has no problem. One of my favorite attachments.

When we built our house, our contractor recommended using a gill, which looked exactly like the pulverizer except it had a double roller on the back. I brought in 16 triaxle loads of topsoil to replace what the developer had stripped off my clay to get a good layer of topsoil back on top. I used my contractors skid loader to layer out the top soil evenly and then I rented a tractor with the gill and used it to contour and pulverize the top soil into what almost looked like processed topsoil. It worked fantastic. I hydro seeded after that and have had a fantastic lawn for years. Fantastic as a finish tool!

I could see this being useful where you would normally use a box blade, but don't want to move dirt as much as just rough/level it. I still think someone skilled with a box blade could do everything this does (I know a few guys that are artisans with a box). For someone like me with minimal experience on a box blade, this does many of the same functions, but without the skill required.

Like most ranchers/farmers I am constantly fighting the damage done by feral hogs. I wonder if this would work with the clumps of grass involved with hog damage?. Currently I use a disk with a drag behind the disk. It does OK but require quite a few passes. I would be very interested in hearing what others use to "fix" or smooth the damage done by the feral hogs.

Hmm, thinking of basically ripping them from the ground by disturbance with the shanks? If they are shallow rooted and you can drive over them, it seems like it would work in theory. Nothing I've tried out though or seen anyone attempt. You'd want the 72" or 84" on your 4 Series. www.goodworkstractors.com/product/dirt-dog-pulverizer/
