James At after and an awful waste of time on my part, i’ve came to the conclusion that 2 syllable names also apply to this. for example, my name is nicole and you’d have to drag out the ending of the name with an extra syllable when singing just like you would with a name like “jack” or “jade”

@@graceyhammer It's because with Nicole, second syllable is stressed whereas with Sophie, Jessie, Ellie etc. the first syllable is stressed. If you really wanted to you could sing Nicole without dragging out the syllables, but it would make the name sound weird (like nickel).

It would not be suprising. In showbusiness having a stage name is pretty common, and many performers in UK are forced to change their name because of what Hugh said in that clip - you can't have two different artists with same name in the same union at the same time. For example David Walliams is actually David Williams, but there already was David Williams when he was joining the union.

Well my parents were going to call me 'Sophie' but then didn't because my mum knew that my grandad would shorten it to 'Soph' and like your friend she hated it when people shortened names. I think it grated on her for a while when she called me 'Rebecca' instead and in the end I preferred 'Becky' anyway!

That's not what "namesake" means. It means _someone you're named after_ , not _someone who happens to have the same name_ . I wonder if you're getting confused because the Dutch word is ambiguous as it can mean either of those things.

There kinda is some logic to not giving your kid a monosyllabic name. If you normally call them by the shortened version (Bob, Steve...) then use the full version when they're being naughty they know they're in trouble. With a one syllable name you can't do this.

Same goes for names like Lottie/Charlotte and Maddie/Madeleine etc. I also know someone who is called Katie, but her proper name is Katherine, which she's very happy about considering that she's a barrister or something and feels that abbreviated names (especially Katie, which she thinks sounds like a young girl's name) don't sound as professional sometimes :))

The show seems a bit less refined now, not sure if that's a good thing. The questions feel less tightly structured, but at the same time it seems to allow more panellist interaction which is always great.

considering the difference in prononciation of names in different countries, a steve can be 2 syllables - ste-ve (it's more common to be written as Steffe)
