Meditation is such a hard thing to do, it demands a lot of discipline. I feel instantly better everytime I manage to meditate, especially when I'm feeling anxious. I wish I could practice everyday!

Steven H. you can. I do before bed. without it I can't really fall asleep. it isn't hard. that's the mindset you need to have. because if you don't. it's really hard. maybe try to start with guided meditation. that's a lot easier.

You can become aware at any moment. In the bus, in a lecture. Discipline is a martial term, mindfulness is all about recognizing that you cannot fight your own mind.

If you don't have time for 15 minutes of meditation you are in need of 30 minutes of meditation. Though start with 5 minutes and gradually increase if you are a beginner.

Don't think of meditation as some kind of magical or spiritual thing, think of it like defragmenting or cleaning your hard drive, your brain. Even here in Asia we don't think of it as something magical, just something to find balance in the body. Clear your mind of random and negative thoughts and relax, keep calm, feel good, that's all it's about.

To be fair, it does help people to think about it in a spiritual or religious way, but the benefits are the same.

that is referring to a specific type of mediation that is not mindfulness meditation. In this other type the monks imagine being compassionate to the entire universe rather than 'just sitting' as some in the zen tradition are fond of saying

CaliburEx What on earth would make you think that? Sexuality is one of the most integral facets of human life. Mountains of research have established that basically any act to reduce or remove sexuality from a persons life results in significant harm. Even in one study of 900+ men, an entire town in South Wales and 5 adjacent villages, over 10 years, those who had low orgasm frequency were 50% more likely to die than those with high orgasm frequency, with a dose-response relationship across the groups. The fewer orgasms, the more likely to die, the more orgasms, the less likely to die (with no upper limit of protective effects from more orgasms found.. but that might be due to social factors keeping overall sexual activity unnaturally low, it is an industrialized nation after all).

Okay then; Make sure you start small. Trying to do too much each day will make you get exhausted quickly. Start at something like 5 or 10 minutes. Do that for a month. Then add 5 more minutes. And so on... Each month add 5 minutes to your practice. You may get some effects from it in the short term however you only get t he long term benefits after at least 2 years of 1 hour a day meditation. Don't give up, go at your own pace.

I have a feeling that it might be something similar to talking about meditation here: The results aren't conclusive, but small studies on it have been conducted and it seems to be promising, but don't sell your soul to declare that it absolutely does work. Just know that it appears to have some merits in some areas some of the time.
@lightsidemaster
@lightsidemaster 7 лет назад
I dunno where exactly but I read a study recently that proved that learning styles are utter bullshit, and that people should be engaged in as many forms of learning as possible, because that engages more areas of the brain and so solidifies the knowledge. Basically the more complex and more creative that new knowledge is absorbed and worked with, the easier it'll be to retain it

I'm a man who believes deeply in meditation, but hilariously I don't buy into the relaxation sort. I'm a guy built around focus, so a bit of pressure can be a good thing, so long as you can tame it. HOWEVER, it's important to note that the fundamentals of this vanilla brand of meditation is actually to focus on not focusing. If you're focusing on your breathing, you're taking all your focus out of social concerns, and info about your environment, and redirecting all that wasted power to the simplest process: Existing. For this exact reason, I took some meditation I learned one day and have since reworked it and applied it to various areas of my life, focusing not on comfort, but on necessity. Focus on just being a pair of running legs while doing cardio training? Sure, increases how far you can run so long as your will and focus are strong. Space out while at the orthodontist's and suffering massive levels of pain? Why not, saves you a lot of trouble in the long run. The funny thing is, at some point meditation IS mind over matter in itself, and I find it fun to challenge oneself and routinely practice such exercises of will and focus. I love to just play around with various things I can do a fair bit better if I perform some form of "active meditation" while doing so. I mean, it's basically extra strength on command if you can find a way to make it work. Who doesn't love being strong? Funny topic for me, so figured I'd give my 2 cents at the least.

+Catt S As in, you're supposed to convince me that meditation is something I should do, rather than convince me it's something I shouldn't. It was intended to only be semi serious, as some people do prefer to not be "cured" of things like ADHD. (I personally don't like calling them "disorders" for this very reason.)

I’ve been meditating since I was a little kid. I didn’t know that’s what it was until years later. It has been extremely helpful to my serious chronic pain conditions & sundry other medical issues. I don’t have high blood pressure anymore because I just slide in & turn down my heart rate. I don’t have the control I used to but my mum made me (mostly) stop. I was meditating so deeply, for so long, that I became unaware of my surroundings. My heart rate dropped very low, I was fine but it scared the crap out of mum who thought I’d died. Plus surfacing from someone touching you hurts like hell. Immediate physical & psychological sensory overload. She made me promise not to go longer than a half hour, hour max. I’ve lost most of the benefits except conscious control over some of my autonomic functions… IF I’m well enough to be capable of that kind of focus, I can’t meditate while puking for example

Hash Zero I know it's difficult, but you can eat healthy 80-90% of the time, you can exercise and meditate in 30-40 minutes, socialize 1-2 times a week. What about read a book before bed, and this has to be a novel. And you can download a lot of games for your smartphone, for example I use Lumosity. Just the act of taking a new route to your home or office is stimulating for your brain.
@gnarthdarkanen7464
@gnarthdarkanen7464 7 лет назад
Hash Zero, a simple and constructive hobby can help with that muscles/couch potato issue. If you don't like the gym, you can take up something like woodworking. Start basic, and don't invest in a lot of power tools. That's important, so I'll repeat... Do NOT invest in a lot of power tools. Hand tools will teach you coordination and skill, get you into less trouble before you figure out you're in trouble, and force you to actually work to accomplish the goal. Not enough time? Well, it's not like you have to build the entire magazine rack in one sitting. Get the plans together and find materials for one day. Picking through the collections of wood, learning about grain and talking the shop-talk with guys at the hardware store can be quite a work out on its own... Draw and cut what you can as you can. Maybe you can't even get the time to finish a single cut? As long as you don't lose what you're doing, the project can be stored and wait until you get back... JUST GET BACK... That's that hard, discipline part. Any project is a long series of steps. Take the time to make a step, and go on about your necessities. Maybe you hate woodwork... Running a saw by hand starts to seem like bordering on self-torture... BUT if you see this exercise through you actually have something to show for your efforts. At the gym... You pick up the weights, and you put the weights down... repeat... and you've spent hours accomplishing exactly nothing (but sweating your ass off where you might not have quite worked it off)...lolz... There's lots of other ways to exert yourself to a goal and find accomplishment and a material gain for the effort. Just avoid unnecessary power tools and conveniences. You'll appreciate the end results (whatever you make/grow) a lot more, and you're still working yourself naturally to increase activity and gain in the physical health department... :o)

I know that the chances are no one has done a study on this, but... In the Star Wars fandom, there's a thing called "Sith meditation" where instead of focusing on calming things like breathing or waterfalls or whatever, someone (usually one of the "bad guys") focuses on negative emotions like anger and hatred and just sort of works themselves up. I'd find it very interesting to see any results for a similar exercise for real people to do- what would be the short term effects? What about long term? Could some of them actually be beneficial?

I'd be interested to know if there was a distinction between guided meditation (thru apps like Calm or with a guide) and silent meditation. I've had the argument presented to me that silent meditation is more beneficial (and more likely what Buddhist monks perform). Always cool to see the science behind these things!

I am usually very skeptic about everything that seems too spiritual or stuff on Energy, aura and that kind of things, always preferring whats strongly backed up with science like medication for example. But one time I had a terrible anxiety attack and the medicine wasnt working and against all I think I tried yo meditate to get out of that attack. AND IT WORKED!! so i want to tell everyone who Is skeptical about non-physical stuff that it works. I take it as being as physical as excercising your body. After all, our brain Is part of the body too.

they usually record a bunch of videos at once, which could be why you're seeing the same shirt in a lot of videos.

The degree of certainty concerning the conclusions of meditation studies reminds me of that of marijuana studies. So far, things look pretty positive, but more research, especially longitudinal studies, should be done.

you have to do it every day for at least a quarter of an hour to notice any definite long term or perminant , benificial effects on your mind or brain.

I just can't get into mindfulness. If I'm really in a depressed spiral, I find playing a video game with loud metal playing in the background and singing along helps me more, drowns it all out. And then once I'm calm, I can go do something more productive. I actually haven't needed to do it in a while now. But is it really that different if I'm just focusing on the game rather than my breath? Or did I just have bad/misinformed psychologists? They always made it sound like mindfulness was about avoiding my problems instead of dealing with them, and that put me off so badly... I also found the process soooo didn't help, but maybe I was doing it wrong :/
