Lucy Worsley has the body of a weak woman but the heart and stomach of a king of England

what do you mean "weak woman"

@@maddiepaddy2608 it is a reference to a speech by Elizabeth’s the first. Lucy has made this joke about herself.

Must have been very cozy in the wintertime, no central heat back then! However, I can't imagine how stuffy it would have been in the summer, even if it was all, light materials like silk, etc. Yikes. The ensemble does look beautiful, though. :)

They had the mini ice age at the time, and castles may be cold even in summer weather. I do suspect, however, that the wealthy had lighter clothing for summer. Less velvet or fur linings.

I love Dr. Worsley, and Mark Wallis is a jewel. My only complaint about this segment is that the rolle (aka bum roll) and the farthingale should have been pushed more to her hip level. The look was to have this long narrow torso and a sudden, dramatic explosion of skirt. But I'm nit picking: the dress was not made for Dr. Worsley and they probably chose to put it on her in a way that didn't have her stepping up the inside of the gown. This is such a fun bit.

He does say that rather than being pushed down it should be in the middle at this time period - i don’t know myself of course!

I once dressed up as the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland and since I have a rather long neck, I had to wear up to 3 ruffs around my neck to fully frame my head and I had a gown with huge billowing sleeves that trailed behind me and a massive train all made of velvet which got really heavy and I was wearing modern heels and I'm surprised I didn't fall flat on my face because of the massive dress which surrounded me.

"It's not for a queen to hurry - that's for servants". Except in cases where they need to hurry out of an immediate threat to their life. I genuinely wonder how many royals of old have died in disasters and other emergencies because of their attire. It's a funny yet sad thought. Ah, the bitter irony of the human experience.

Wouldn’t the pair of bodies/stays have been spiral laced and not cross laced? I thought cross lacing (which requires two laces) wasn’t utilized until around the 1830s.

it did come back... Alexander McQueen fall 2013. Lots of this stuff comes back around, the thing is...it won'tbe at sears or kohls or Kmart. The average ordinary person did not dress like this even 'back then'. If you go to things like the MET gala or the opera, or a ball, thesethings are still used from time to time.

I love how cultures can be so dramatically different from each other. He says it's improper for a man to dress a lady. At the this time period in England, men were helping Geisha with their Obis in Japan. Would have been fun to see the 2 cultures mingle (or *try* to). Some high position lady of England visits England, falls in love with the Obi and wants to try one on. 👘 The Obi was put on by men because of their weight so when the proper English lady expects a dainty servant girl to help her put it on and a man calmly steps up .......... 😨😨😨 😳At least she'd have an excuse to swoon.😳
