Cylinder Head Warped?
This particular head never overheated. I knew it was a good possibility it didn't need to be resurfaced. Its definitely worth checking.
I couldn't tell you how much money I have saved in machine shop work. Its a lot!!! Anyway, you can probably pick up a straight edge and some feeler gauge blades for less than what a resurface would cost at your local Machine Shop.

Surfacing a warped head DOESNT TAKE THE WARP OUT! A warped head is going to have warped cam journals. The head needs heat straightened until the cam journals are aligned to spec. Then you can lightly skim surface the head if it needs it at all.

You said you could go up to 7 thousandths of gap and still not have to resurface but YOU require that it pass 3 thousandths before declaring the surface straight. Why such a difference? Would a head that only passed 6 thousandths be prone for Headgasket leaks?

do they resurface with valves in place so you can just reinstall, or do you have to remove all that?

As long as the valves are not protruding out past the surface side. If it has a overhead camshaft, you might be able to rotate the cam until all the valves are down in the combustion chamber enough to surface. If it's a overhead valve motor, you shouldn't have to worry as the valves will already be closed with the push rods removed. In any case, the guys/gals at the machine shop will know to remove and replace valves, thermostat housing, dowel pins, or anything that will take a chunk out of the surfacing machine stone. If it's a diesel head, the valves may be flush with the surface side and will most likely need to be removed. Hope this helps and thanks you for watching! God bless!

Is a 0.018 inch fixable on a 2.4 toyota Camry?

18 thousandths is beyond the warpage limit, but not too much for a resurface. machine shop serviceable.
