Does "Shaming" Actually Work?

Shaming relies on the perception of shared moral values, which our society no longer has.

When you say, "You do you....and you know their "you" is cutting off their own genitals and engaging in incredible self mutilation." Are you really being kind when you say "you be you"? Or are you being kind when you say, "What you are doing is insane. You are harming yourself, and harming the Image of God embodied in you?"

The problem is that we got to where we are because extremists and cronies have constantly used our common decency against us. Regardless of what tactics are used moving forward, that has to stop. We can have compassion without allowing disingenuous and dishonest people to manipulate us.

I too feel certain I would have had my tits cut off had I grown up in this era. This targeting of the children is the most disturbing trend ever!

I am with you Lauren. I am for Acceptance. It’s not about them as ppl. It’s about trying to change reality. If they agree that they are trans and not actually biological women or men. Then in return we would call them their preferred pronouns out of kindness.

Shaming only works if the action that is being "shamed" is actually SHAMEFUL

The problem is that the "Dylan Mulvaney" we're talking about isn't a real person. It's a fictional character being portrayed in front of a camera. You know this person does not act like this when nobody's paying attention to him. It's totally valid to criticize a fictional character.

So we need a clearer distinction of the direction of tactics. Matt's way is reserved for the politicians, activists, and doctors pushing these things and the more gentle way is reserved for the confused people who just need guidance.

Matt has a point, like demanding the use of women's bathrooms, when these people demand that I conform, it ends there.

We can't mainstream people who clearly have mental problems or encourage self harm. We shouldn't be overly cruel, but we can't just shut our eyes to this clear problem.

I know shaming works because I've talked to countless people who tell me they can't possibly speak up, speak out, or organize without losing connections to their friends, family, or co-workers. They say they must comply with wokeness, or others will see them as phobic.

When logic has no effect, mockery is in order.

The problem with shaming these people (aside from their online hugboxes) is that they're already nearly outcasts from society, and shaming them only drives them further away. It might work on normal people, but those who are most susceptible to this are those that will most quickly develop a tolerance against shame. And their disdain for those who've mocked them will lead them to become angry, and either withdraw more, or possibly double down on ruining society out of spite.

Just do nothing and maybe it'll go away. oh wait, that's how we got here.

Also, Lauren, the reason why shaming wouldn't have changed your mind all those years ago was because of your adherence to finding the truth. Dylan may be able to claim the same, but everyone knows, even deep down inside himself, that he's lying.

I think shaming won't work these days because most people are completely devoid of any shame.

Matt lays down the reality with the sterness of a father telling his son he did something wrong. We've had too much softness, and it's led us down a silly path.

Playing nice has lost literally every battle for the last 60 or so years. Shame can be sanctifying when tactfully applied. In the case of Dylan Mullvaney, he's an attention seeking narcissist who is actively trying to spread this social contagion and he deserves everything Matt dished out.

Perhaps modern Christians should reacquaint themselves with the Bible...and stop apologizing...."Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Being told to accept people who don't accept themselves is a tad difficult. Especially when it comes with a "or else" from those who would impose it others.

I've never had a problem with gay/bi people but the whole trans/non binary bullshit has gotten way out of hand.

Being nice and saying ‘what you do to your own body is not my business’ is what got us to today. Shame is what held back the tide, we need it back.

If you want to experiece what the West was before, go to Hungary, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czechia or Poland. Western Europe is woke af (but things are seeming to change thankfully).

Shaming may not work great on an individual. But the people watching the person getting shamed sure as hell take notice.

Someone has to either feel what they did was wrong on a fundamental level or feel that the devaluation of their beliefs by others is devastating because they value those others for shame to work. If you're not playing on the same gameboard to begin with, it's probably not going to be effective.

Of course shaming works. Entire cultures are based on it. Ask the entire nation of Japan.

Morality is objective, shaming immorality is good.

Shaming is absolutely an important and valid tactic it's just simply social pressure now how much pressure to apply is the question and I personally think the answer is generally a lot less than the left but a hold onto our morals and beliefs and shame those who deserve it in proportion to what they have transgressed.

When saying "I dont like trans (or any so called vulnerable segment of society) is immediately equated with near lethal violence or worse, then what is now bullying? Not calling a spade a spade leads to a breakdown of what has brought us the kind of freedom we are fortunate to have.

this is moral foundations theory 101. Liberals prioritize care and fairness. Libertarians prioritize freedom. Loyalty, authority, and sanctity are primarily right wing values. Libertarians and liberals cannot be shamed.

I don't care what is the mix of genetics/upbringing/ cultural milieu that creates a person. They are who they are and that's what anyone should take someone as. I don't forgive a tiger for wanting to eat my children because he is a victim of his nature, I just kill the tiger because he is dangerous. We should be respectful to everyone because that's just good manners. That's it.

Shaming does work look at what they did to our society. I'm sure you've seen the video of the 7 girls on whatever podcast terrified to describe what a women is. that's the point we have gotten to. It's a short term gain that we need. We can let the lovers do the loving.

Shaming only works if the person being shamed is psychologically normal. People suffering from conditions such as NPD, BPD, HPD and plain old psychopathy, are simply going to shrug it off or become vengeful.

Go after other people’s children and expect harsh consequences.

The point of humiliating these people isn't to bring them to your side. It's to identify a common enemy for you own side to rally against while emboldening your own morale. You will never bring these people to your side, outside of few exceptional individuals.

Just say no to niceness on this issue.

This is interesting. I just watched a detransitioner and he brought the same conclusions. We alienate them as they are getting love bombs while their self esteem and self worth is in the gutter.

Shame works. If shame didn't work, they wouldn't be so upset by it. That "alphabet" community isn't a community. It is a collage of sexual deviancy and depravity that leads to self harm (drug abuse, disease, self harm, harm to others, and self termination are all rife to those people). So, shaming is not just something effective it is kind. What is not kind is tolerating any kind of sexual deviancy at all. If you are upset by my comments, you are only confirming my opening statement.

Right or wrong, when they started going after children, they set us on this path. Matt Walsh has been milquetoast and meek compared to what's on the horizon. People are going to defend their kids, and they aren't going to care about how their tactics are percieved.

Today, I’m a gay man. I’m lucky I was born in the 90’s because I fear if I had been born a little later I may have been “transed” as a child. I was naturally feminine in my manurasims, always wanted to play with the Barbie’s, makeup and dresses and clothes. But I grew out of it, and even “manned up” a bit. Today, I don’t define my entire self by my sexuality. I’m not defined by a rainbow or a letter of the alphabet. I’m just a guy who happens to be gay. So I believe that people like Dylan shouldn’t be shamed, because like Lauren said, I think it’s just going to force Dylan and people like him to dig in their heels even more and fight even harder. I think Matt is an intellectual light weight and a bully. Using strong, inflammatory language doesn’t make you smart nor does it give any credence to the point he’s trying to make. Communication is important. As long as we keep flinging mud at each other, we’re never going to get past the pointless bickering.

No one cares, the point isn't to "change hearts and minds" the point is to aggressively speak the TRUTH. If idiots don't want to hear it, that's on them. Let them and the world lose out, good for it.

The harsh and robust tactics of DW/Matt/Knowles serve another purpose, to get this topic into the mainstream and wake people up to what's happening. If you just have 'polite' dialogue between the right and the left over this which would consist of the right saying "we think this should be only for 18+" and the left responding with "shut up bigots" - then it remains out of view for most people and only the ideologues on both sides are invested, which is what the left want. This is why the left hates Libs of TikTok - because she brings the left's insanity out to the general public whereas they want it to remain private for the ideologues and their potential young victims. The proof is in the pudding, as Matt and the DW have done more against transing the kids that anyone else. They've got legislation passed and prevented hospitals from transing kids. I support Matt 100% in his tactics.

I’m sorry Lauren, but you’re really thinking like a women, and that’s not always a bad thing or anything. However, we are not in the time where we can afford to keep being nice. We were nice. We got attacked, fired, insulted, banned, put in prison, etc And now these same people are literally defending removing children’s body parts because they feel like it? Would you be worried about being nice to someone trying to directly harm your child? If we don’t win this battle, the world our children will be living in will be like hell. Shame doesn't really inspire real change. It's a necessary mechanism sometimes but fanatics don't care about differences in opinion or even valid criticism. If you publicly promote for any child to get put on the program you need to be publicly rebuked. You should be shamed, mocked and ridiculed. Shaming has a place. Jesus shamed people. However, that doesn't mean shame is the only game in town. As with all things the virtuous action depends on the context you are performing it in. Shame may or may not be virtuous depending on how and why you are doing it.

Nearly every pro-shaming comment on this video is confusing the term “shaming” for “taking a vigorous and passionate stand against.” You can do that without unnecessarily offending people. Edit: I think they’re also confusing “shaming” with “social pressure.”

If someone can't accept THEMSELVES for who (or what) they TRULY ARE,, then I'm damn sure NOT going to be pushed into being accepting of them for something they're TRULY NOT!! The salient point is reach. If Joe Bloggs down the road wants to become Jo Bloggerini, that's up to him. He has no impact or influence on anyone else. If Jo Bloggerini suddenly gets millions of TikTok followers- mostly kids- AND has the ear of the leader fo the free world, he's no longer Joe Bloggs, the strange guy with falsies down the road; he's now an influencial force in the world. That's when he becomes a legitimate target for ridicule, shaming and brutally honest criticism.

The problem with Shame is that it is often accompanied with psychological sublimation. What could be genuine feelings of humiliation for having done something foolish, degrading, immodest or dishonourable - - these feelings (because painful) are suppressed, and a whole new, arrogant, assertive, purifying transformation takes over, which becomes louder and impenetrable to any criticism. This whole process is further complicated if the sublimation aspect is now lauded as the 'authentic' emotion - such as becoming a 'Pride' movement.

Matt Walsh and his contemp for the degenerates in this Culture is needed. You don't have to like him personally, like you may not want to go to dinner and drinks with the man, fine. But he is much needed. And I'm glad he's here and speaking out the way he does.

I think one of the issues we need to address is how to diseminate information without resorting to mere clickbait and short sound bites, it lacks overall coherence for an argument. Twitter and TikTok have not really served humanity well.

Shaming only works if you care about the opinion of the person doing the shaming. You first need to respect someone's opinion of you in order to be insulted by them or feel shame over what they call you. I have no respect for these people, so you can guess how much shame I feel at what they call me.

In scripture you see Christ calling for us to love our enemies while also calling out the pharisees when they were incorrect. When I was young and new to the Goth scene it was all about music for our social group...young people nowadays are defining themselves by sexual identity for worth. Dylan is an adult and as far as I can see is an pretender with problems and yes he should be challenged. I have met so many confused children it is actually frightening. I met one male child who was scuttling about on a bike wearing a dress. I noticed that the chain on the bike was off and rusty so offered to help him fix it. I did nothing myself but show that child how to fix it. He seemed to enjoy doing that so I I explained the maintenance that needed to be done to the bike. I had an old bicycle kit with me and gave it to him as a gift and some all in one oil to put on the chain. His father wasn't happy and told me that I had confused his child because his son was no longer wearing a dress!!!!! Sorry but there's a time to scream

It’s not a bad thesis Lauren. I personally think that the gender reassignment crowd are young, confused and mostly suffering from mental illness. According to your approach, you wouldn’t mock someone for being schizophrenic or bipolar or whatever. But…mockery, satire, edgy humour are important tools politically for the conservative right to use to hopefully affect political/cultural change. I think they are entitled to do that, and the left have certainty done that to conservatives over the years. If the conservative right does welcome gay people, transgender people, ideals anathema to Christian teaching…then what on earth does it stand for?

Good take, I still think Matt was right but there should be a separation between those we can recover and those who are damaging society.

Shaming does work. But as in everything there's a sweet spot where you don't go too far yet far enough. Just keep basing everything on rational facts.

As a method of persuasion, reason works with maybe 5% of the population. Emotion can work with another--the most important--20%. The rest can't be swayed no matter what. One must use both. Shaming and ridicule are an important weapon in the ideological arsenal.

Interesting as always, but I did end up disagreeing. I don't see Matt Walsh etc as shaming, but as simply saying X is not true. Which if X is not true, it's right to say.

When you are mocked or shamed, you are not the person being targeted for changing minds. It’s the people watching what happened to you. And it’s not about “changing” minds. It’s about controlling what people will allow themselves to even consider.
