In today's video I'm going to be talking about the sizes and profile types of 8020 Extruded Aluminum that I have been using on my 2019 Sprinter 144" Van Life Build. This was one of the hardest parts for me to wrap my head around when I first started using the 8020 Extruded Aluminum material.
📖 Chapters
00:00 - Intro
00:30 - Where I buy my 8020 Extruded Aluminum
01:31 - What 8020 pieces I used on my van
06:20 - Choosing Fasteners
🛠 Materials Mentioned
EXTRUDED ALUMINUM
I’m getting mine from Item. In Canada, people talk about Rocky Mountain Motion control. I found it helpful to find a local supplier who stocked a few common parts.
SIZES:
- 30 Series: ca-product.item24.com/en/cata...
- 30 Series Square Tube - ca-product.item24.com/en/cata...
- 40 Series: ca-product.item24.com/en/cata...
- 40 Series Square Tube - ca-product.item24.com/en/cata...
- 45 Angle (Upper Cabinets): ca-product.item24.com/en/prod...
- Bed Slider Profile - ca-product.item24.com/en/prod...
- Front Bed Trim - ca-product.item24.com/en/prod...
- Bottom Bed Rail - ca-product.item24.com/en/prod...
FASTENERS:
Automatic Fasteners
- 30 Series: ca-product.item24.com/en/prod...
- 40 Series: ca-product.item24.com/en/prod...
90 brackets
- amzn.to/3s6soCa (Only work with m5 bolts m6 doesn't fit but they are the cleanest looking)
- amzn.to/3bbRg4k (Work with m5 and m6 but the m6 bolt heads make it a bit tight.)
- amzn.to/3bnwGyl (Used these brackets for fastening panel faces they are super strong and will work on 30 and 40 series)
Bolts
- M5 Bolts: amzn.to/3sjL8OL
- M6 Bolts: amzn.to/2ORFBQU
I liked to use the button cap fasteners the best and decided to go with stainless steel.
T-Nuts
40 Series T-Nuts
- m5: ca-product.item24.com/en/prod...
- m6 - ca-product.item24.com/en/prod...
30 Series T Nuts
- m5 - ca-product.item24.com/en/prod...
- m6 - ca-product.item24.com/en/prod...

Wow, Canada is metric ! Never knew this. Great to get a video with someone talking about this 80/20 extruded aluminium in measurements that it’s made in. Ie millimetres and centimetres. This is a big help. Here in the uk we went metric along with the rest of the planet. Just the US that are behind.

Thanks for this information! We plugged along without it when we were making our decision, but by looking at your other videos we kinda figured that you had 30/40 series in use. We are using 30 (10 series in the USA) for all our build, even our bed system, as we designed it with enough support and tested it out. We aren't finding the smaller series too difficult to work with in terms of fasteners, we have small hands I guess, lol. We get it that the larger 40mm (15 series) may be that much easier but it was also heavier and we really wanted to watch our weight in this build as we have a 170" sprinter. Super excited to begin the cutting/assembling this week in fact! Thanks for your great explanations in all your videos.

Thanks for the info. And just for everyone's info, my 350mm corexy 3d printer made of 20x20mm extrusions can withstand a few of my nephews and nieces totaling about 250-300lbs. I think 20x20 and 20x40 is adequate for most applications in a sprinter build, and they're way cheaper for the value considering the current price of lumber (~$15-20 for 2m of 2020 or 2040 used to build my 3d printer).

Hi from the UK. thank god to hear someone use 30mm, I've no idea what 1 and 3/16" is. Yes it is easy to work it out from the multi system tape measures we use here, but how un-neccesairly complicated, 30mm or 3cm or 0.03m all the way...

Good video Scott. I started out using 1" 80/20 and switched to 1.5" for the rest of the van for all the reasons you mentioned. Beyond fastener strength and a wider range of profile and fastener types, the 1.5" just has a look of solidity that makes a van build look fantastic.

Thanks for the info dude. I'm also building and have abandoned the 1inch series for the 1.5inch. The primary reason was the flimsiness of the bolts that connect the 1in. I was able to break a connection with my bare hands, I just don't trust it to hold up the the rattles and forces of driving.

Just to be clear. The numbering of extrusions define the sizes. I.E. 8020, 6020, 2020 all refer to the size of extrusion 80mmx20mm, 60mmx20mm, and 20mmx20mm respectively.
@fixedgear37
@fixedgear37 10 месяцев назад
metric is actually "20-2020" etc. The series # comes before the size. When using fractional its just the 4 digit. 1010, 1020, 1515, 1530

Hi Scott, love your videos! Very helpful for us virgin van upfitters. I am getting close to finishing my extruded aluminum cabinet design. I have cardboard mockups in the van at this time and am trying to finalyze the details before ordering the materials. My question is regarding the slam latches for my bank of drawers. I was not planning on having cross members between the drawers to maximize space. So I guess i cant put slam lathes in? It looks like you addressed this issue, at 3:40 in you video, I can see something with some small piece of aluminum? Can you please describe what you did here?

@@BeccifromOz Minitec in the UK too. They have a very nice and easy rt L joiner that doesn't require drilling holes to make the join. So it can slide along. It is expensive compared with drilling a hole and bolting but it makes life so easy. Minitec have a simple to use catalogue.

Heya Scott. I'm about to step into using an 8020 alternative that also comes in 2020, 3030 and 4040. Do you think it will be ok to use 2020 for something or would you use 3030? For the bed frame I was thinking of using 4040 as 3030 won't be good enough (according to 8020 tech toolkit), but I'm not sure if I should use 2020 or 3030 for the rest. At most I think it will span like 60cm without support, which according to 8020 tech toolkit is fine. When fixed at both ends, with load evenly distributed and 600cm length, with 100kg centered it shoul only deflect 0,0909" or 2,3mm. I see you speak upon 20mm, but for me 2020 is a bit cheaper than 3030.

Hia bud, love the video... Question. I'm converting my box trailer and need to keep it as light as possible but want to make a platform bed that hovers over a quad underneath. Whats the best size of extrusion to use... i.e 30 series or 40 series or coukd I go smaller?
@i_know_nothing7788

Some extrusion suppliers have a calculator of deflection v. load. Though you want to keep it below the yield point to avoid a "set".

could you elaborate why 20x20 is not good?
@sevenohnine
@sevenohnine 10 месяцев назад
Actually the 2020 (aka series 20) is less expensive and readily available on Amazon in the US. It is rigid enough for cabinetry using certain joints and sheer panels. The best thing about using these 2020 AL intrusion is they weigh less than their bigger cousins, an important factor missing in this video.
