I think people are scared of letting their metabolic fitness level drop because THEY KNOW the pain cave they have to put themselves in to get it back.

You said something then! But if you ease yourself back in, the competitive fire will take over and before you know it you're peaking again. I feel you tho.

Be cool to hear your views on “how to maintain strength and strength endurance when biasing conditioning”

I'm really glad that they brought up the 50th percentile here. I'm at just about the 50th percentile and I do think this open was a good opportunity to test my strength. On many podcasts we only really hear them discussing elites so it's nice to hear them discuss the average crossfitter.

Same. I'm a 50th percentile athlete. Though maybe with a strength test I may have been 60-70th.

Would be nice to have some sample athletes scores up on the screen for the open and quarters and talk about what they should focus on. Great podcast 💪🏼

I am absolutey the "not well rounded at all of them" guy he's talking about at 10:05. Finished middle of the pack for QF (1102). I'm happy to post my scores for QF. 1: 970th (149 reps) 2: 1194th (217 reps). 3: 837th (120 reps) 4: 1443rd (20 reps). My worst two scores were the heavy C&J and the conditioning. But I really believe that as Brannen describes I am the guy that needs to focus on strenth only for a time and build up those core numbers. Hope that helps!

I really enjoy your content, both the fun (awards) and the serious (this)! I'd say for anyone who didn't get to 😂semis i.e. most of us 😅 strength is an important factor. I scrape at the 90th percentile in the Open and am strength-limited in around half the workouts - strict HSPU or a 225 c&j are 1rm efforts. A sub-7 2k just won't help me on those workouts - I gain a few spots for a decent row and tumble thousands for not getting to the 4th bb (q4) or the rope climbs (q3). I've been told: don't touch a rower! But my body can't take only strength training (shoulder joints, hips, etc. age46...) so my gainz are microscopic and slow. So videos like this one definitely help put things in perspective and help optimize! 🙏

I think if your goal is to be ok at crossfit in the next year or two, training a crossfit modality where there is an even spread of skills. However if you wanted to be truly great and you look over a longer span of time, I think investing in getting skills locked in so that the will never be a weakpoint again. For example spending 6 months of 5 days a week practicing gymnastics skills and then for the next 5+ years you might only need 1 workout a week to keep the conditioning there. Maybe you spend a year building your olympic lifting and running mechanics locked in and then you only need to do it 1 or 2 times a week to progress the strength aspects. People don't like specializing since the sport is about being well rounded, but if you can specialize and turn a weakness into your greatest strength than you are just chipping weaknesses off your stat sheet

I'm always fittest, in all aspects, when I'm healthy for an extended period of time. Sickness and injurys always reset the cycle. Stay healthy, train consistently and you'll be amazed at how much fitter and stronger you'll become.

The BBJO Wallball wod could be in the Open next year. Also a scaled version of qf 1. (95/65 lb bb, step ups with 1 dumbbell)

But it's sad that many athletes in quarters, couldn't do the Snatch weight barely or at all. Or make it the last 2 barbells on the CJ workout. Definitely feel that QTR workout 4 could have been placed in the Open. And a strength test in the Qtrs. Whether a 3 rm or 5 rm or something like that.

Why is that sad for you? It didn't affect anyone except those athletes.

But should I be working on strength or strenth?

Strength should matter, it takes the longest to build significant gains.

@@trainingthinktank9645 the TTT60 actually. I love btwb app bc of how easy it is and how it’s laid out. WodUp is fine too, just preference. Zero to do with the programming. Some of best programming I’ve ever done so far. The mobility work is such an awesome addition.

strength matters more and more. just look at last year's games where Laura Horvath dominated on the Sunday; why is that? simply because she is one of the strongest athletes. of course, she's also an incredible athlete with great capacity/engine. also, that's why Haley Adams has never been on the podium. strength doesn't only mean 1-rep max and the strength component of a workout has become more prominent. I am not saying thats enough to win the Games of course but clearly the strongest athletes win (Toomey). another proof if needed is Davidsdottir who won the games twice; at the time, strength wasn't as needed as today, which is why she wouldn't win today. the newcomers like Raptis and Lawson are strong but they'll need a little more to beat Laura unless the workouts don't require such level as they did last year. Mal Obrien is really strong but even her could use a little more to beat Toomey who remains the ultimate package to this day.

having said that, it feels like Medeiros has focused too much on strength and seems heavier than he used to so i'm not sure the trade off worked in his favour really. i think he was strong enough. Muscle is heavy! I could be wrong but isn't he around the 210 pounds mark? that's too heavy. Kerstetter is also one of the strongest athletes but i think too heavy. again, muscle is heavy! but then again, what do I know :)

100% I feel like it is easier for a strong athlete to give a little more and dig deep mentally to last longer, but a weak athlete can't just mindset there way to snatching a 90% weight 10 times in a row.

Strength matters!! If you have erg, gymnastics & heavy barbell. Its always the barbell that will slow people down.
