Thank you for this. No one friggin talks about this so openly. What to do? Work on your weaknesses outside of class. Yes, gymnastics would do me good 🙂. #intermediateandproud

A lot of the things in a one hour class is hard to manage for a person wanting to "level up". I eventually started thinking about it sort of like how you might hear people knock the public school system. You can get a good education from a public school, but you might have to chase it yourself. If you want to go to class everyday you will learn things, but you aren't going to get ahead. No one at CrossFit is going to make you do your homework. You can hire a "tutor". You can stay later and "study" more complicated things. It's tough though because you don't want to be the guy off on the side on his own not participating in the community. That's a big part of why you are there in the first place. It's the equivalent of taking all honors courses at school. In a normal one hour class you are going to get general programming that the typical person at that gym can do. And I'm not super strong by any means, but when you have 15 minutes to work up to a heavy 3 reps in the back squat and your 1 rep max is creeping up towards 2x body weight. You have to practically sprint through warm up reps. If the wod of the day has 95 pound ground to over head, there is nothing stopping you from putting 115 or 135 on the bar. If the wod has 100 pullups and that's too easy there is nothing stopping someone from doing 100 chest to bars. The only thing is that you are kind of saying that the workout is too easy for you so there is some psychology there too. I didn't want to be condescending towards the coaches or the other people in the class. We always talk about scaling down, but rarely do you hear about scaling up. Maybe instead of calling things modified or intermediate or whatever, you instead talk to the more elite athletes about modifying up to what will be a challenge for them. Don't always focus on the beginners scaling. Coaches and athletes should scale up too.

I mean honestly, if you don't have a background in weightlifting and gymnastics then you're never going to have a prayer of going pro. If you're spending years on being able to clean and jerk 315+ while under fatigue and spending years trying to do sets of 10+ muscle ups and handstand push-ups the competition is already light-years ahead of you. By all means go after your goals but understand where you're at. if you're trying to become a next level athlete by just doing gpp you're delusional and your coach whose leading you down that path is lying right to your face.

Speaking of scaled, I think it would amazing if we could start to remove that term altogether. We should be calling it modified, customized, personalized or even call it adapted the same way it is for the adaptive divisions. Scaled has a negative connotation when in all reality, it's what WAY more people should be doing in order to break some barriers instead of trying to do Rx (or saying that did on the board when they didn't) because they don't want to feel "less than".

If you aren’t strong, you can’t play. That just the way it is.
