Imagine if Victorinox made (instead of the hook) a phillips head screwdriver that still has the nailfile on its side like the hook does now. That would make the Compact perfect.

I’ve super glued emery board(backing removed) to my climber in various places now I have 3 files. One on back of hook, one on side of flat head and one on the side of the can opener.

I’ve always thought that they should put one behind every corkscrew on the side of the liner. I don’t think they would have to build an extra machine as it’s lasers on or something (I think).

I guess you would have to cut the hook off and weld a phillips head onto it.

The Phillips on the 58mm combo tool on the Rambler/Manager/Minichamp may just be the best Phillips Victorinox makes. I use that darn thing all the time.

Here is my 2 cents for what its worth: compact is a great knife because all the tools are very usefull and its small, i always want a corkscrew because then you get the eyeglass screwdriver. The one tool you are almost guaranteed to find is a regular screwdriver, you go try and find a eyeglass screwdriver out in the field when you ain’t got one on you

This is why I carry the Explorer for EDC. I spend most of my time in an urban environment, and can live without a woodsaw, but an inline Phillips frequently comes in handy. If I were going hiking or camping the Phillips wouldn't be so important, but that's not my everyday life.

I just got a Explorer and I already love it. Is there any other Victorinox with the end Phillips and Scissors? I know the champ has it but I would like a Victorinox that is a layer smaller than the Explorer. If you check out Victorinox's list of the Compacts functions there isn't mentioned anything about a Philips function but yah you can in a pinch use it to get a Philips screw out but it's not an intentioned funktion from Victorinox's side.

This is why Victorinox needs to bring back the Yeoman and the Scientist. I bought a Compact and carried it for a while but before that I mostly carried an Explorer. I eventually wound up dismantling my Compact to make my own Yeoman. It's even better than the original because it has the file on the hook.

It’s a Felix Immler “in a pinch” Phillips driver. And I’m one of those who says you can use it as a Phillips. But there is a reason why it advertised as a Phillips. You can also turn a no. 2 Phillips with the Classic SD. But again it’s not the best idea to use it for that purpose. The question is how often do you need to turn a Phillips screw in your daily existence? 99.9% of the time, if I need a Phillips driver I’m using a cordless screwdriver or a Craftsman! As you said, the combo can be used as a Phillips in a pinch and in my opinion, in a pinch, it works very well. It will definitely save the tip of your main blade.
@swizzarmygrizz
@swizzarmygrizz Год назад
These are for when you unexpectedly need an SD in my opinion. I have to open stuff daily that uses Phillips screws so I always have a proper SD handy, but if I’m out somewhere and maybe need to change a battery in my guitar or one of the pedals that’s when I use a SAK SD. I have even had to open stuff with my Compact if I was really unlucky. It gets the job done but it’s not a good time.

Nice "real life" style video, thanks! You know, after reading all the great commenta about the compact i got one, carried it a bit, and then... Carefully stored it a drawer and went back to my regulars, mostly a climber or a sportsman when I want to keep it smaller. Not that the compact is not a good knife, it surely is, but the combo tool it's just that kind of compromise that does a little of everything, but nothing good. Can't beat the regular openers layer for the combination of stronger pry tool through the cap lifter, or delicate "remote control opening" pry delivered by the can opener, combiner with a more useful flat Phillips driver. You know what the best would be? A climber with the sportsman nail file instead of the useless secondary blade! Both for filing nails, of course, and... For small size Phillips screws! That thing is fantastic on the tiny Phillips on electronic devices

Good video 👍 I have a Compact and it's a great pocket knife for many things...but not taking the place of a screwdriver. In a pinch, shipwrecked, car broke down 50 miles from nowhere, maybe 😅 but not my first choice. I usually carry the SwissChamp and it's much better for stuff like that. The Compact I carry maybe when I'm going out and don't want something on my belt and want to have something on me for 'just in case' but I'm a SAK junkie anyway so I have a decent little collection of different models. I pretty much like them all and the quality is always spot on. Just depends on what I'm doing as to what I'll be carrying.

The 2d Phillips can be improved upon , easy MOD . Simply grind off can opener and reshape slightly. My RU-vid video gives show : Victorinox Angler black plus scales and modification. I follow the lines of a 2d leatherman bit , it also much improves the small flat with much better clearance, the way I do it , the reshaping takes the 3mm flat down to about 2.5mm . I even modded the Explorer which has a good in line Phillips, but did it for the sake of getting a more usable small flat . I mod all my SAK apart from the Swiss champ, just as a base . Oddly enough grinding off the can opener actually improves the can opener? Another video 6 years ago demo . : Victorinox Explorer, huntsman, farmer, climber screwdriver can opener mod. Have a look at your leisure. Any feedback welcome.

I carry a Compact with a suspension clip too. I had to undo three phillips head screws today on my garden vacuum/blower. It was too hard with the Compact. I went inside the house and got my Milwaukee Fastback with the bitdriver with phillips head bit. So easy compared to the awkward combo tool. I love the smooth feel of the SAK but the combo tool is a dealbreaker for me. Terrible as a phillips screwdriver. Only in the worst emergencies.

The combination tool is a reasonable bottle opener a poor tin opener a mediocre flathead and a sh** Phillips. The parcel hook is mostly useless the best part being the damn small file on the back. I, like most people drink my wine in restaurants, where normally they have corkscrews. I never been in an office, bank or solicitors, a post office or anywhere I might want to sign my name or fill in a farm were pens weren’t available.

I don't think the back Phillips is much better than the combo tool for Phillips screws. I made a nice bit exchanger that fits my Compact combo tool from a 1/4 square to 1/4 hex adapter it rides in the bottom of my front pocket with a Phillips bit. I recently bought a 3-D printed bit exchanger from eBay to try it out it fit and worked well but my DIY exchanger rides in my pocket better. I also added an LED light to the scale mod from Felix Immler here on RU-vid.

Happy Wednesday Lord Grizz. TBH if I am going to open a Phillips head screw I rarely use one of my SAK's for that, I use a rechargeable hand held electric screwdriver with the appropriate sized Phillips driver. The back layer Philips on SAK's is IMO totally impractical to use anyway & I have yet to use the in-line Phillips on my Spartan Lite, Climber Lite, Huntsman Lite or Outrider, nor do I consider the Combo tool on the Compact, Waiter & Bantam suitable to use as a Phillips screwdriver anyway. To the best of my recollection the only times that I have screwed / unscrewed a Phillips screw using a SAK was to fit a SwissClip to several of my SAK;s and for that I used my Cybertool M SAK with its bit driver and I have used the tiny combo tool with the Phillips head on the 58mm Midnite Manager to tighten up a very small Phillips screw on a small transistor radio.
@swizzarmygrizz
@swizzarmygrizz Год назад
I use them all the time but it’s certainly not my first choice if I am working on something. They’re more for when I need to change a battery or something like that and I don’t feel like going to get a proper driver.

I seriously wish everything was Robertson. A lot of electrical terminals are combo Robinson/slotted and those little square drivers are the best for grip. The one downside is it can be hard to get them if you’re at an angle. Torx allows this.

@@swizzarmygrizz Happy Thursday Lord Grizz. IMO Victorinox is behind the curve again, they need to produce updated versions of 58mm SAK's like the Rambler, Manager / Midnite Manager & Mini-Champ / Midnite Mini-Champ with a Torx screwdriver in place of the Phillips on the 58mm sized Combo-Tool

I think the point of having these tools on your SAK is that the have something you can use when you need a tool and your away from your regular tools. It's about having some basic essentials in your pocket because you don't have your toolbox, or your cordless screwdriver, everywhere you go.
@strongandco
@strongandco Год назад
Yup...I fell for the Compact hype and bought it against my better judgement. I never carry it. The 2D Philips and can opener would have been better than the turd of a combo tool. I prefer to carry a Rambler on my key chain for my skissor needs and a Pioneer or Spartan in my pocket. Sometimes I just go all out and carry and the Explorer. That magnifying glass is pretty handy when you reach the reading glasses stage of your life and there's nothing quite like having a proper inline philips in your pocket.

The Compact Disc s for someone who must have the scissors, and either finds a third layer to be much too bulky or they just don’t have very many random screwdriver moments in their life. Someone who turns a lot of random screws at odd moments is probably going to want a Tinker or Super Tinker, depending on their point of view regarding scissors.

Sure it's compact and has the scissors but the combo Phillips is pathetic. The manager has a true phillips in a smaller form factor. But nooo they had to discontinue the utility master (Manager) and promote the thin Compact. Great video sir
