Does the toe drag make you faster and should you use it to improve your speed?
In this lesson you'll learn why athletes like Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell use the toe drag and how it can help improve speed through low heel recovery.
The toe drag is all about low heel recovery. You may have seen athletes like Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell performing a toe drag in their warm up. What's good for them is good for the rest of us mere mortal sprinters, right? As with most things in track and field, it's not that simple :)

Something people don’t think about (and what I preach as a coach). The toe drag is good for low heel recovery, but ideally you should try to train to have your foot sweep as low as possible WITHOUT the drag. Track is ultimately physics and friction creates drag = deceleration. As many videos as I’ve seen no one has really ever pointed out this topic. Good information, just wanted to add that thought in

This is what we have been teaching our power sprinters to do, for the last 30 YEARS. It has to be done properly, though (and not for too long of a distance), in order to produce the optimal result. It's important for hurdlers, too.

great stuff. something a little off topic but still some how connected: would you recommend to not stretch the ankle to prevent a possible weakening of dorsiflex motion? startet to add some yoga to my training but i'm not sure if some of the exercises (the sattle pose e.g.) are that good from a sprinters perspective!?
@OutperformOfficial
@OutperformOfficial Год назад
That's an interesting question. When it comes to stretching, it's important to strike a balance between flexibility and stability, especially for sprinters. While excessive stretching of the ankle may potentially weaken dorsiflexion motion, completely avoiding ankle stretching exercises may limit your overall mobility and range of motion. The saddle pose in yoga primarily targets the hips and can help with hip flexibility, which is beneficial for sprinters. Regarding the ankle, focusing on exercises that strengthen the muscles around the ankle joint, such as calf raises and ankle stability drills, can be helpful in maintaining stability and preventing injuries. Additionally, incorporating dynamic warm-up exercises that involve ankle mobility, such as ankle circles or ankle pumps, can be beneficial before sprinting. Our free guide on the 3 phase warm up should help give you some ideas: ru-vid.comUgkxuu7uwwBXNy45vSrYsOUK3BOR7GU1BoG_

Great short... Coach my arms don't extend as much as they should and are very restricted when I sprint, any suggestions on how I can improve? I'm 18, I've been training for around 8 years and my pb is 11.1. It's very hard to change when you've repeated it for a long period
@OutperformOfficial
@OutperformOfficial Год назад
Thanks, a few suggestions: 1) Warm up with dynamic exercises for your arms and shoulders (walking arm swings, hamstring sweeps etc. 2) Practice arm drive drills to focus on full range of motion. 3) Strengthen muscles involved in arm extension Remember, change takes time and consistency. Best of luck!

When i was a kid i was really slow. Maybe the slowest kid in class i literally couldn't sprint. And till today i dont know why😂. But one day at age of 11 as we played TAG at school i dont know how , i just unlocked my legs so suddenly i became the faster kid in school in that single day without training at all that morning i was the slowest and then the fastest. I donw know why or how (maybe someone can explain )😂 Now i am 23, if you think that i never ever had train my running i am running with 26km/h and i think its pretty fast without training. 😂 and this is what i am regretting now I wish I had practiced it and now ,maybe i could run faster

Drag the toe is correct. This also helps to bring weight center and ballance low. It enables quicker response. My question is what is nathematical equation of distance between back foot to front foot. Hight of a person? The front foot has to go forward then kick back. How far back has to go. Need help on that.
@OutperformOfficial
@OutperformOfficial 6 месяцев назад
A good clue for the distance should be whatever creates the proper angles for each leg.

Coach what do you suggest for a former sprinter that just run to keep in shape. I use treadmill to get away from pavement. I notice on pavement my right lower calf muscle tighten up maybe Achilles. I massage with rollers, I stretched always before. I thought maybe it's the way I'm running bc I'm a sprinter jogging long distance and there may be some elevation at the beginning of my 3 mile run. What can I do to prevent that discomfort on either leg so I can just enjoy. The impact can be ignoring. I listen to my body i can tell when something is off. Jay natural instincts. Hopefully I'm making sense trying not to make this long. Thanks coach. About to stretched and warmup now before treadmill run lol
@OutperformOfficial
@OutperformOfficial 11 месяцев назад
Pavement is not a great surface to run on. When running on a treadmill set the incline to at least 1 or 1.5. Also try sand drills, walking on heels, toes, inside and outside of foot. Really helps the issues you are describing,

There is no such thing as “heel recovery.” It’s called KNEE FLEXION. There’s absolutely no evidence at all or reason to think intentionally limiting the recovery leg’s knee flexion increases turnover rate. This is just another one of the track community’s stupid, superstitious beliefs.
@OutperformOfficial
@OutperformOfficial 11 месяцев назад
It sounds like you may be confusing some concepts. "Low heel recovery" is a very common term used to talk about the path of the foot being closer to the ground. Conversely high heel recovery is when the foot cycles closer to the height of the pelvis. Hopefully that helps!

Ultimate respect for Jesse Owens (my favorite sprinter of all time). Bio mechanical experts have run simulations that put his times close to Bolt if he used blocks, ran on a composite track etc. That being said, this video is about why you see athletes like Powell and Bolt drag the toe in warm ups. Also important to note, no sprinter has "perfect form."

That can definitely be an issue if you are making a lot of contact with the track.
