Should Bob Martin have earned the Medal of Honor? Comment below 👇
In this clip, Martin recounts his actions with the 1st Cavalry Division during Operation Shiny Bayonet in October of 1965.
Martin enlisted in the Army in 1963, did four tours in Vietnam, earned a Silver Star, three Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star with “V”; survived combat operations with the 1st Cavalry Division in 1965, a stint walking point with a recon platoon in the 101st Airborne Division, a tour advising with Special Forces, and another carrying out search-and-destroy missions with the 173rd Airborne. After the war, he stayed in the Army and retired in 1983.

I watched the original airing of the video. 4 tours in Vietnam??? absolutely he deserves recognition. These men were mistreated when they returned. I was a kid, but I remember neighbors returning with PTSD, hiding under cars in the street, in the middle of the night yelling at things that were not there. The neighbors trying to help them circle back into society. I have a great deal of respect for them. I feel for my elementary class mates who lost their fathers during that time.

If it were in my power, I would give him the award. And yet like most medal of honor, recipients, he would probably say that the medal of honor should go to the Sergeant he so admired, and tried to save. What strikes me the most is the ability to laugh. It seems to me that that is his critical tool for living with the memories and maintaining sanity. it’s just astounding - that ability to look at the situation from arms length and see all the ridiculous aspects of that reality deepest respect, honor, and gratitude to these men for what they went through and did

Warriors fight with love as their motivation. I believe it helps everything they have to do to sit better with them. I'd say that this soldier was a real warrior working to save his buddies while maintaining his humor. Points where something humorous was said he took care to relate. It is that that causes me to understand what it is about him that makes him and his story not at all difficult. He sure does not cause me to see him as a victim. Thanks to telling us your story of initial combat.

MofH criteria “…distinguish himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty,". So i guess it depends on the threshold for the ‘call of duty’.

Those who write the citation can put him "up for" a medal. It's up to those who read the citation that decided "yay" or "not quite". Thus you get the term downgraded. The flip side, a citation can also be upgraded if the actions are deemed worthy by the reviewers. The higher the award, the more scrutinizing that takes place.
