I don't know if you've ever thought this but to me some clients seem like "professional clients."
It's as though you are the magician but they know all your tricks! They might have been so "therapized" that they now think and talk in jargon.
This might be fine. But sometimes the psycho-babble and expectations they have of your therapy is overly influenced by their past experience of other people's therapy. These expectations and excessive theorizing may actually tie them up in knots and prevent them leading a more satisfying and happier life.
In this video I provide some ideas which over the decades I've found useful in helping the "professional client" actually start getting what they need.

Therapy is so very hit and miss, even with the best of intentions. It's more art than science, which can, and does, disappoint those searching for guaranteed outcomes.

well said about people expecting "guaranteed outcomes" (without realising it). its easy to use the 'lingo' as a shield rather than being confident about ones own intuition. (Maybe I doing it here). something I realised years later was that I had been annoyed with the therapist when really they are there to help. (although they often realise and start talking about everyday topics and then things become more settled)

I wish more therapists were like you but we all know there's a lot of money involved for keeping stuck patients around.

All evidence to the affirmative! I get a lot of referrals of ‘failed’ clients. It’s not them that failed and the narrative construction alone is breathtaking.

Wow that is so powerful 🥺 as somebody who’s been to more bad shrinks then you can shake a stick at this makes so much sense! ❤ I’m not there to get a friend or a peer or a patient. I’m extremely intelligent and high level so people tend to ask me for help even when I’m paying them. Thanks for this wonderful explanation. You’ve given me hope that I can get good therapy as well. I would be able to use it I believe 💛

At our second meeting my psych told me that I needed to stop intellectualising and start feeling. This led to a discussion about my expectations for the therapeutic relationship, and we're now in a place where he challenges me rather than letting me waffle on and on, and keeps on probing with questions. It's really worked because the therapist has the skills and experience to tailor his approach for each individual client. I suggest you might need to find someone similar.

Got out of the hospital in October. Been in and out of therapy for 9 years. I genuinely think most of it is just basic advice and maybe 2% is actually useful. Therapy also clashes with the real world. You can’t follow the advice of a therapist while trying to survive in the workplace or trying to figure out how to carve a place in the world because therapists generally don’t care. They just want you to be ok. Not successful, not fulfilled, not realized, just… ok. After almost a decade it’s very disheartening

Agree. Ultimately it is up to you. Support from friends and coping tools from an outside source are good. But ! Up to the individual. Good luck.

I have advice for the client- run from any practitioner who ever talks about you like this. Check out their online presence and avoid. In my country, this is a breach of professional ethics. One of the most common complaints to ethics bodies and state tribunals is that therapists impose views about therapy and treatment and patient autonomy without heeding or even acknowledging the patient’s authentic concerns. Look for a therapist who creates an environment of teamwork - a partnership. Whatever your narrative (even if some egoponce describes it as psychobabble) look for a therapist who heeds why you draw on it and what its role or value is for you. You deserve a devoted humanist therapist. This reeks of controlling behaviour.

I am curious to know what exactly is the breach of professional ethics. I understand that title might give the impression that the client is being blamed but the actual video, especially in the wider context of Mark's approach and background, is all about how to help people meet their needs in life moving beyond unhelpful labels. The imposed views that you mention are in fact the very "psychobabble" people have been fed over the years (either by other therapists or by other means) that Mark is referring to. I don't think he is referring to the narrative of the client you are right to be defending, rather the false impression that the problem is deep rooted and requires long-term therapy to be fixed. In fact, Mark often discusses the significance of clients being heard and understood before even trying to re-frame their perspectives or look for solutions. I will be reflecting on your comment further in relation to the video but I genuinely think Mark's point was misunderstood if it was interpreted as controlling behaviour. All the best.
