1:56 The poodle picture you have for liver is not actually liver. Liver in Poodles is simply called "brown", so that's what you need to search for pictures of poodles with the liver gene. The Poodle in that picture is recessive red (lacking all black pigment in the coat due to the E locus). You can tell that the dog isn't liver because it still has a very black nose. Unlike the E locus, liver changes the coat AND nose color.
@bluecollarden
@bluecollarden 6 лет назад
My bad, I thought that was a liver poodle because I thought the nose was brown. Perhaps wasn't the best picture to find for liver. Thank you for pointing out my mistake. I do not know poodles very well as a breed so thank you.

Not sure... I have 3 dogs 14:44 - caramel colored base with a dark caramel fade at the muzzle and a dark caramel nose, with cream fades at the dies of the neck and belly. But it's hard to spot, some people just look at it and say she's a single color. (female Russian toy terrier) - A brown base with black striped and a white triangle shape on their back, they fade out into grey or white the the muzzle, belly, and paws. (male English hound/wipid) - A cream buse with a diamond/rhombus star type of white spot on their neck(Kinda like the male English hound/wipid). Theres a good chance the pups would be brindle too, but as for dark, that depends. Brindle is variable depending on parents. If you want dark brindle pups, the male should also be dark brindle just to guarantee that. If he was a sable, you'll still have some brindle pups, but they'll probably be lighter brindle.

I have a Blue Brindle Dog not a black brindle male. Can he, If mated with a “Lilac” female produce lilac pups or will the brindle be dominant in that case?
@bluecollarden
@bluecollarden 6 лет назад
It's a bit hard to say. If he mated a lilac, firstly, it all depends on exactly their genes are. Your blue brindle is technically a black (since blue is a dilute of black) and "lilac" is technically liver (dilute of liver and also technically part of dominant black). If your dog is homozygous dominant, then all of the potential pups would be blue. If he was heterozgous, then there's a 50% chance half the pups would be blue and half the pups would be lilac. Brindle is a bit hard to say. Dominant black (which they would both have) is dominant over brindle, and brindle is dominant over non-black (the other colours like sable, tan point, red, masked, etc). But brindle is recessive to dominant black. It depends on what the genes for the lilac are. If she is a carrier of brindle, then there's a good chance half of the pups would be solid and half would be brindle.
@animalobsessed1
@animalobsessed1 6 лет назад
The color called "lilac" is not just liver. It's what you get when a dog is homozygous liver AND homozygous blue (dilute) at the same time. (It's just another word for "isabella".) So a blue mated with a lilac can produce lilac puppies if the blue dog carries a liver allele in addition to his two his two dilute alleles. (Since lilac is a color, and brindle is a pattern, you can have lilac colored brindling.) Brindle isn't exactly dominant over the A-locus genes, since it doesn't cancel them out. A dog can be brindle on top of being sable, tan pointed, or having a mask. (In fact, for some reason brindle dogs without masks seem to be pretty rare). The typical brindle dog is sable, masked and brindle at the same time.
@bluecollarden
@bluecollarden 6 лет назад
Sometimes I don't explain things very well, you probably said it better than I did. Yes, brindle is technically dominant over non black, but that also varies on what the A locus is. The A locus can be tan point or various sable, resulting in unique brindle patterns, or even recessive black, giving the appearance of an all black dog (very very rare though as recessive black shows up in specific breeds than others).

Can a red male blk mask his parents Dad is brindle mom is fawn .Bred to a female fawn her mom is red dad is fawn Can these two produce brindle?
@bluecollarden
@bluecollarden 2 года назад
If the parents are not black and not brindle, then they cannot have a brindle pup. Both parents need to carry at least one brindle gene, they could appear black but could both carry the brindle gene, but as soon as they don't have black, they cannot have brindle pups. Even though the male has a black mask, that is due to a completely unrelated gene. If both parents are red/agouti, no brindle can happen. All that pups would be red/agouti.

The only way you can truly find out without having to breed her is to do a genetic testing on her. Because she's black, she could be hiding a bunch of other genes, like brindle, tan point, masking, etc. A genetic testing could tell you everything she had so if you wanted to breed for something specific, you could find the right mate for her to increase your chances.

What color is he considered? Brindle? Or Black still? Also he is going to mate with a Red and white female bulldog. But she does have a black nose and brown eyes like him. What do think I would set the punnet square to, so we can find out what their litter color would be like?
@bluecollarden
@bluecollarden 5 лет назад
He would be considered a black brindle. Sometimes it's hard to tell when they're young depending on the brindling. He would be a black brindle because there is such thing has liver brindle and blue brindle. As for predicting pups, it is a bit hard, as I don't know if his genes are homozygous or heterozygous. Do you happen to know what colour his parents were? That can give me a better prediction on the pups.

@bluecollarden
@bluecollarden 5 лет назад
@@sandlotsluggers773 Okay, so your dog is heterozygous. My prediction will be that there will be 50% black brindle and 50% red. As for white the white, it seems like they both have a higher white ratio. There's a possibility you could have at least one all white pup. All the pups will have some sort of white on them. Their noses should stay black and their eyes should stay red. The only way that could change is if they both carry a dilution gene, causing potential blue in the genetically black pups, but it's hard to say.

What colors can you get if you breed a brindle dog to a black dog? And a brindle dog to a blue and white markings dog? Please would love to know your answer on this.
@bluecollarden
@bluecollarden 4 года назад
First question: It depends on the genetics of the black dog. if it is homozygous K, then all pups would be black, but be heterozygous for dominant black (K) and brindle (Kbr). But if the black dog is heterozygous (either KKbr or Kk), then approxmiately half of the pups would be brindle and half would be black. The red part of the brindle depends on the sabling of the brindle as well as the hidden genetics in the black dog. The black dog still has the genetics for agouti, but because it would be dominant black, that agouti gene is hidden. It also depends if the black dog and brindle dog both are carriers of liver, dilution, even recessive red, as that can affect outlooks. Second question: Again, it depends on the blue dog. Despite being diulted (dd), the blue dog is still all blue, meaning it has dominant black (K). So if it's homozygous K, all dogs would be black. Blue would only appear if the brindle was a carrier for dilution, then approximately half the pups would be blue and half the pups would be black. If the dominant black is heterozygous, then approximately half of the pups would be brindle and half of the pups would be dominant black. Again, only blue will show up if the brindle is a carrier for dilution. The white markings would appear depending on how much white there is. If there is only a little, there's a good chance that half of the pups won't have white markings and half would have small amounts. If the white is approximately half of the body, then there's a chance of some pups with no white spotting, some with a little white spotting and some with approximately half white spotting. Don't forget about the hidden agouti genes and if the dogs are also carriers for liver and recessive red.

i have a seal dog and i want to produce a recessive black, what are the possibilities?
@bluecollarden
@bluecollarden 3 года назад
Honestly, I don't think you'd have a lot of possibilities. There aren't a lot of recessive blacks because they're usually confused as dominant blacks or they're seen in specific breeds, like German shepherds. We have no idea if your seal dog is homozygous or heterozygous for dominant black, heck or even a carrier is recessive black, so until you know, you might not ever get a recessive black with your dog. You could get a mate that either a carrier or is recessive black, but if you're dog is homozygous or not a carrier, there's no way anyof the pups would be recessive black, they would only carry it. I do not support inbreeding of any kind, so I would not recommend breeding your dog with its child to get recessive black, that just causes a lot of issues down the road. If your dog is a carrier of recessive black, your best chance is to breed it with a recessive black dog, then you could get pups that area recessive black. But you'd need to get genetic tests for them, because there is hardly any way to tell if your pups are recessive black. The only way you could truly tell us if both parents were non-black and they suddenly had a black puppy. Since your dog is seal and not agouti/non-black, genetic testing is the only way to go and that can be very expensive. Unfortunately, I don't think there is a chance your dog could produce a recessive black. The only way you could consider it is if you get a genetic test done and it is a carrier for recessive black.

@bluecollarden
@bluecollarden 7 лет назад
DreamyNight Jamaa technically there is no "wolf grey" in cats. the only time red and black hair mixes in cats are when they are tortoiseshells/calicoes. cats have for types of tabby: ticked, mackerel (vertical stripes), spotted and classic (blotched). now torties and calicoes can also display tabby markings as well, which will be the closest to "wolf grey", but the hair itself will not be banded the same way as a dog/wolf. a cats hair would be it's original color (red, black, chocolate, blue, etc) and a lighter form of the color to produce it's tabby markings, while dogs will have black (or liver, blue and Isabella) and red banded together. agouti in cats and dogs are very different from each other.

My dog is black with brown eyes and a black nose, and she has white markings on her face, belly and paws. Idk why I decided to share that, maybe because you’re talking about dogs, but btw I love this series and I’m interested in learning about genetics in dogs so this is perfect!

I have two possible answers. He is either getting old or he has a progressive greying gene. Part 3 describes more of what progressive greying is.

I have 2 Border Collie x Black Labs, one is Black with white on his chest and the other is brown with white on her face, chest, legs, paws, and tail. Their mother is a black and white border collie, their father is a black lab. The brown dog was the only brown one out of 5 litters, why is she brown? What do their A and K loci look like?
@bluecollarden
@bluecollarden 7 лет назад
The one dog is brown due to the liver gene, that's in the next episode. Both dogs would have a KK or Kk genotype, so it's hard to say what their A genotype would be as it is completely covered by the K gene. Liver is a recessive gene and it turns all black hair into a rich brown. Labs are a common breed for carrying liver (chocolate labs) and border collies can express liver quite easily too. But since it's a recessive gene, it needs both parents to carry the gene, and it will not show up in all the pups if both parents are black. Most likely, the other pups are also liver carriers, but there's a small percentage of them who are are dominant for no liver, so they would not pass it on to their pups.

Thank you so much for this video, now I understand a little bit more, but the colour genetics for dogs is still a mystery to me. I find it a lot easier for horses, haha! I have a female shorthair brindle dachshund. What are the different colours that I could breed with her?
@bluecollarden

Honestly, the possibilities are endless depending on the sire.

Jessica Robinson dog genetics are very confusing. It took me almost 2 years to understand it in its (almost) entirety. Cats were a lot easier for me understand as there aren't as many "sections" to figure out dominance to. Dogs just have so many variance and genes can interact with other genes in so many ways.
@jessicarobinson8070
@jessicarobinson8070 6 лет назад
so idk if this will be too hard for you to answer but.. let's say my black and tan chihuahua (has some white markings) had puppies with a brindle male (has some white marking) would some babies come out brindle? and could some come out completely different? because i know someone who bred her merle to a grey and white male and all babies came out beige

I have a bulldog, he's mainly white but has plenty of tan patches all over his body. Which locus would he be a part of?
@bluecollarden
@bluecollarden 7 лет назад
SockChanIsTrash my guess is that the tan patches on his body are sable. try to take a closer look at his fur too. if you can faintly see a tipped hair, then he's a tipped sable. if you cannot see it, he's most likely a clear sable. I don't think bulldogs have recessive red in their genes (will be talked about in a later episode) so I'm going to be safe and say he's sable.

How do you explain lilac tri, champagne tri or chocolate tri?
@bluecollarden
@bluecollarden 6 лет назад
Lilac is in the next episode. However... I'm not exactly sure what you mean by tri. I know you mean tricolor... but that sounds like cat terms and dogs don't share a lot of cat terms. Do you mean black and tan with white markings? The basics of black and tan are explained in this episode, as well as liver (not chocolate, chocolate technically doesn't exist in the dog world) and tan, blue and tan and lilac and tan. White is its own episode which I'm working on as of right now. champagne is more a breed specific colour name.

Hello, I was looking at my dog and I thought for sure that she was a Tan Point, but I later found she had white pencilling instead of black. Is it possible for her still to be a Tan Point dog?
@bluecollarden
@bluecollarden 7 лет назад
Emily Quamme I think so. if the black and tan patterns are still consistent with the typical tan point, then I would say so.

Hello so I have a full liver colour dog but can see tan hairs when you look close up her nose is liver what would she be ?
@bluecollarden
@bluecollarden 4 года назад
Hmm, finding tan hairs around the nose doesn't always indicate that they have some sable or brindle if she has no other red hairs on her body. My guess is it's just the thin, short hair close to the skin giving it a tan appearance, or perhaps those hairs are beginning to lose pigment and will eventually turn grey with age. But if you find more red hairs on her body, you could consider sable or brindle.
