Saying that his dog is a border collie and then giving the judge pictures of a pitbull might be the dumbest thing I've ever seen. Especially after the kid said that it was a pitbuill. If he wanted to commit to that lie at least he shouldn't have brought any pictures of his dog. What a fool.

This 11 year old is articulate and aware. I like it. Grandma may be raising him but she's sure raising him to be calmer than her, yet just as clear and articulate. Lol. Love it. This case is awful. I hate when these dog owners think it is ok to let gob their stinking dogs to go in other people's yards and attack people. Judge Millian clearly didn't understand the trauma a child may experience after being bit. I'm an adult and would be petrified. The answer isn't to buy him a dog. The poor kid may neer therapy at this point, especially if his delay like his grandma says does anything to his emotional awareness.

They should have gotten at least $2,500. Also, she mention that the 6 year is a "little delayed". That's probably why she didn't bring him to court, as not to expose him, or make him uncomfortable.

So what I loved about the grandma is, she said her grandson was delayed and her being an advocate for her grandson. I truly believe mom wasn’t there because grandma takes cares of the kids and would understand the story better…

WHAT? Had that been the judge's daughter with a mutilated ear, she would have awarded herself the full $5000, awarding them only $500 telling them to buy him a toy, is insulting. I was only 'pushed' by a Labrador when I was 10, and I am still frightened of dogs to this day, I can only imagine what a 6 year old is going through, but it is worth a lot more than $500...

Judge Milian made a terrible decision; I've worked in the law for twenty years and this was not her finest hour (or, more accurately, 14 minutes). The first words out of the defendant's mouth were a lie, and an idiiotic one at that: calling the dog being a border collie and not a pit bull. That, in itself, allows her to disbelieve anything he says subsequently. Awarding the child only $500 for pain/suffering and no money for punitive damages stemming from the dog being off leash many other times or defandant's bald-faced lie about the dog's breed is a travesty. By giving the defendant only a slap on the wrist she essentially sanctioned his reprehensible behavior. She didn't even compel the defendant to recompense the insurance company or medical facility for the costs incurred. I don't know what she was thinking in awarding such a piddling amount. Granted the arbitration is edited so we don't know what else may have been revealed in testimony, but I can't imagine any reason why there should not have been a larger verdict. She should have also insisted that the incident was reported to animal control so that there is a record of the dog's violence in order to protect the community in case of another such incident. Perhaps she's been on the bench too long.

The defendant said during his testimony that after the dog broke loose from his leash he removed the dog from the child then hit the dog. Gee what a lovely way to train an animal maybe that has something to do with the animals behavior.🙄

I have never liked the look of a pit bull. However, I am not sure they are more vicious it’s just that they have super strength in their jaw and do more damage than other dogs.

Hoping this reaches/helps even just one person... I'm a Canine Behaviorist going on 24 years, I have worked with all walks of dogs, owners, environments, cases, I've trained service dogs, LE K9's, work as a rehabilitator for multiple rescues, worked as an independent expert witness in over 30 court cases and traveled to elementary schools to teach proper and safe ways to approach, respect, and appreciate dogs. Bottom line, even if a dog jumps and nips because it is boisterous, still has puppy energy, needs training, etc... even if the injury is minor, the act alone can scare a child and cause trauma. Luckily kids are extremely resilient and it's usually the parents that hold them back from healing. IF your child ever experiences a dog bite, chased, jumped on, scared in some way, do your best to give them positive SAFE experiences right away, obviously based on each child's level. Some recommendations: Reading with Dogs held at local libraries and shelters are great, watching the dogs at the dog park, have them walk (with adult supervision) a relative's or friend's dog (walking the dog gives confidence to the child and establishes the proper boundaries with the dog, set up a meet and greet at a local shelter (one on one) with a sweet mellow dog that you have checked out prior to bringing your child. To some this may seem "extra", but helping them flip their way of processing what happened, sooner than later, is so important. Teaching them to take their power back, build their confidence, and that dogs are wonderful but all dogs should be understood and respected AS DOGS, not "people in fur suits". Not to mention, having a fear of dogs can be extremely anxiety ridden, they are everywhere in life, and on top of it, dogs are truly amazing creatures. This all varies depending on the child, severity of the situation and the parents comfortability with dogs. Hope this helps, even just one person.
