Mammary cancer in dogs is similar to breast cancer in women in that early detection is important. But mammary cancer in dogs is also different than women.
In this video, Dr Sue breaks it all down - including tips for early detection you can do at home, diagnostics, treatment, and the role of spaying and when to spay.

Thank you for this video. It's been a year since my dog had a cancerous tumor removed and now I feel another small one. My husband was also diagnosed with cancer recently and we are struggling financially with his medical bills. I'm not sure how we are going to be able to afford another surgery for our dog now too. It's sad that it cost so much for people and pets to get medical care. 😔

Thank you for your video, it feels supportive for us as we're going through a relevant situation. We found a pea sized lump on our female miniature dachshund's abdomen a week ago, you can't see it but you can feel it, so we took her into the vet yesterday and it's expected to be a mammary gland tumor, the vet is hopeful it's benign but can't say for sure. She's booked in for surgery in less than a weeks time then the mass will be sent off to be assessed. We are so thankful we managed to notice it early, but equally terrified of the thought that even if it's a benign tumor, it might mean she's more likely to get a malignant one in future. She is 5 years old and we adopted her in Jan this year, we had her spayed a month ago and feel terrible for putting her through 2 surgeries close together. She's changed our lives and we hope more than anything that she is able to live a long, happy life with us.

I found a pea size lump on my dog 8 yrs ago and had her desexed and the lump removed at the same time. Now she has been diagnosed with high grade carsinoma with possible lymphatic system invasion. 2 surgeries later, last one was a mastectomy. Oncologist suggested no chemotherapy for her and give her piroxicam once a day. So even though I did the right thing for her, she is dying from cancer.

My vet recommend removing the mass regardless the mass is benign or malignant. He also recommends getting biopsy AFTER the surgery, NOT BEFORE. What's your take on this? Many thanks!
@Baldnesz
@Baldnesz 2 года назад
It is explained in the video...
@Sheena7625
@Sheena7625 Год назад
A tumor is your body trapping those cancer cells in one place so that they don’t spread. This is the same in people. When a biopsy is done before surgery that tumor is pricked and a hole made where when that needle is pulled out a hole is left for the cancerous cells to escape and spread to your organs and such. Bad bad bad idea always. And always make it clear to the vet that they have to remove the entire mass otherwise if they leave any behind it will come back worse and will have spread to other areas also.

Hello dr. My 11 year old intact rescue had a pea size lump in one of her mamory glands even smaller maybe. Vet did an aspiration gave me a print out of it and said some cells show atypia but recomended an oncologist. I have the print out but really cant understand what the results are. Can you help me understand. Description: CLINICAL INFORMATION: Patient is an 11-year-old intact female Yorkshire terrier with a mammary mass. SOURCE: Fine-needle aspirate from mammary mass. 5 slides. DESCRIPTION: Slides have variable cellularity. The predominant cells are present in cohesive clusters. Cells are round to cuboidal with a scant to moderate amounts of basophilic cytoplasm. Although some clusters contain cells that are fairly uniform, other clusters demonstrate moderate to slightly increased atypia. Perinuclear cytoplasmic vacuoles are observed. Cells sit on a fibrovascular stroma. Some of the stromal cells also demonstrate moderate atypia. MICROSCOPIC FINDINGS: CONCERN FOR MAMMARY GLAND CARC COMMENTS: The atypia observed raises concern for a carcinoma. Cytologic morphology of mammary gland tumors does not correlate well with biologic behavior. Histopathology is recommended to obtain a definitive diagnosis.

My almost 12 yr old dog had surgery but the vet didn't remove all the tumors bc she said it was risky due to my dogs heart murmur and in addition it would cost me a lot of $$$ to remove all 10 mammary glands. Biopsy results came back as low grade cancer. She doesn't recommend a 2nd surgery. She says this 1st surgery was just to buy her time. She has left me in a state of confusion.

CBD Tincture has helped in cases of prevention of cancer or aid in prevention of cancer spreading. I also have a Female Chihuahua, 11 years young, with a heart murmur and a benign mammary gland tumor, her second one. Surgery can be costly but I am applying a sauve to the gland areas. Made of coconut oil, CBD and bees wax. Coconut oil aids in absorption of CBD., the bees wax keeps concotion in place after applied. I hope to find a better way to deal with these tumors, surgery is stressful for all involved human or animal. Try the CBD treatment. More info on RU-vid available also.

Hello Dr. Sue I wish I had found your channel a long time ago. My wife is veterinary assistant and we just had to euthanize our Cane Corso due to a large MCT that was a grade three out of three. We had one MCT removed and about two to three days later another one came back three times the size and really brought our dogs health down quickly. We took him back and forth to the doctor between NC and FL and they advised us that the MCT had spread to all his other organs due to him constantly throwing up and not eating at all. I wish I could speak with you personally to get your take on our situation. Please reach back out to me. I was told by multiple doctors that this case was very rare did not happen very often.

I had rescued a gsd who needed 2 removed 2 years ago and now her other mammry glands are swollen and growing and they said they won’t do surgery again because of her old age. My question is Why didn’t they remove all 10 at the time of the 1st surgery even if the others weren’t growing yet? Because once some grow eventually the others will more than likely grow. I just found out my 14 years old shitszu has mammary tumors . The vet is wonderful he said let's take care of her skin issues first then surgery for the tumors. She has had 2 major surgeries for stones . She is now blind as well . I rescued her in 2015. I do not think I want her to go thru another major surgery . Oh and when we left the vet and got in the car she had a seizure for the first time . I ran her back into the vet he did some blood work and said her blood work is fine . I was to upset to ask him what he was looking for in the blood work . Dr . Sue what could have caused her seizure ? And do you think I am wrong with not having her have another major surgery at this age ? I just think she has been thru so much already . I just had to put my other lifelong dog down due to prostate cancer .

I am so sorry for the loss of the other dog. There are many things that can cause a seizure but please talk directly to your veterinarian who knows your dog and her medical history. I know this is overwhelming. I cannot make the surgery decision for you but maybe it will help to watch this video about anesthesia ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-y7V3VI26Dv4.html and please consult with your vet. Good luck!

I just found your videos.I am dealing with this during Covid lock down.Small lump left side few days later one on right,few days later they are larger,two weeks in the left one shrunk but the one on right enlarged.3 weeks now I finally got her in.She is 10 this yr & was spaded at 2 yrs.Vet has given her anti inflamatory 4 week then will do surgery.I had rotti that was 20 yrs old who got lump on neck then in her tummy in 3 to 4 days lump was very large got her to vet & they recommended I put her to sleep.She was already not eating or drinking.They were in her stomach not in mammory.She was spaded at 15yrs old.was moving to place that had no fencing up.I think this caused hers & it was not noticed for several months.

hello! I was hoping to learn in this video if the tumors are benign SHOULD I put my dog on surgery.... she is almost 11y.o. :( We did X ray on chest (they are clean). we did fine needle but it doesn't say if benign or malignant. She also has bump on the lymph nodes on one of her legs. I don't know what to do. Vets say radical mastectomy plus spay/neuter. But what if it's benign and I put her on such pain ???

My dog is 8 years old . I just discovered a few small mammary tumors above her breast around her rib cage. I waited too late to get her fixed. But I had her fixed when she was 7 in a half years old. My question is without treatment what's her life span?

@@teresataylor3323 I’m sorry for your loss. Did she receive treatment? My dog tumor is small too and she is in surgery now. I just discovered it a few days ago. Her x-ray results came back clean of no spreading.

Hi dr. Sue. My 14 year old Chihuahua has mammary tumors under her armpit and chest. The vet told me it’s inoperable and only gave her Meloxicam . I can’t lose my puppy. Should I go to another vet and try to see if there’s any other treatment? Or is there really no treatment? 😞

My dads dog has a couple of tumors. Today we had our first exam at the Vet. He said, Mammary mass. Suggested blood work, x-rays and surgery. She’s an older 15 year old. We might just put her down😢😞

Why don’t you ever mention Immunocidin Canine USDA labeled immunotherapy for canine mammary cancer? The product works extremely well and has multiple administration routes.

My dog is taking it. The studies are by ppl working for NovaVive and one "Holistic" veterinary oncologist with a small study. It needs more studies imo to be definitive is why its not mentioned often.

@@skyqueue68 did this work for you? I am considering driving my 13 year old Shepherd from Phoenix to Santa Fe for this treatment, but I can't find anyone with a real story on if it works or not.

10! There’s 10 Mammory glands? I had rescued a gsd who needed 2 removed 2 years ago and now her other mammry glands are swollen and growing and they said they won’t do surgery again because of her old age. My question is Why didn’t they remove all 10 at the time of the 1st surgery even if the others weren’t growing yet? Because once some grow eventually the others will more than likely grow. Thank you for all the info you share.
