Thank you. I pointed out this bump to my vet almost a year ago… went in twice because I was concerned something was not right… he told me it’s fine, not to worry and we don’t need to remove it… HE NEVER EVEN TESTED IT…. I just went to another vet this past week and showed the bump… they tested it immediately and it’s mast cell… I am so upset with that other vet for pushing my concerns away… I’m upset I didn’t get a second opinion earlier… and he’s also an epileptic. This is so hard. Sending all the puppadooz and their parents love. If something doesn’t feel right or look right to you… go with your gut and go to another vet.

I took my cocker to the vet because I found 2 large tumors one on the back of his neck the size of an egg and the other on his right chest the size of my open hand. Then I found more nodules all over his body including under his tail on his face and just everywhere. He did an ultrasound and found 3 large tumors in his liver and said that it has probably spread to other organs and that without super expensive tests and diagnostics he could not be able to determine the exact type of cancer but that it did not look good and that chemo would make his quality of life miserable and would only add a couple months after spending thousands. So I took him home and researched the heck out of it and put him on a cocktail of mushrooms, turmeric, omegas, prunella vulgaris and yunann bayeo. He is getting worse every day and I can tell he is not going to make it. This just came out of nowhere and spread like wildfire in a matter of 2 weeks. My other cocker is fine. I have never seen anything like this and I am heartbroken to say the least. I am thinking this must also be genetic since both dogs eat the same food and have the best of everything. I will continue to give him hugs al day until he lets me know he needs to go. It's so unfair!

@@cynthia-vj9oe Sadly we had to put him to sleep. It got to the point where he was going into the laundry room to hide his pain . He could not sit or lay down comfortably without the tumors aggravating him. I could not imagine how much pain he was in. It was heartbreaking and one day I just knew it was the day I had to let him go. He came and sat on my lap looked me in the eyes with his big brown eyes and then went and sat by the door. I drove down to the vets office and broke down when I parked the car-he knew and I just opened the door and hugged him and didn't want to let go and cried uncontrollably the entire time. He was as calm as an angel. Such a trooper to the end. 7 years young.

@@alphacentauri2506 I'm so very sorry that is so sad, I can't imagine. I took my dog earlier and they seem to think that it is liver cancer He's a 12 1/2 yo Australian shepherd. Covered in tumors. The last vet told me they were fatty, but couldn't explain away the trouble he has been having breathing. The lady saw him today filter the tumors all over his body and looked at his swollen toe with holes in it, and she told me to come get the higher strength antibiotics in the morning and just hope for a miracle that it's an infection she can't see. But given his age and all the symptoms He's thinking it's lung cancer. Thank you so much for answering me back, I appreciate it so much and I'm so sorry for your loss. I understand this guy has been my best friend for over a decade. So sorry for your loss

@@cynthia-vj9oe thank you and I know how hard it is -I am sorry you are going through it too. My dog also presented with all sizes and kinds of tumors in the last week before we had to let him go. They started out as what appeared to be fatty tumors on his collar and then when they did the ultrasound they found the tumors in his liver. The vet said it looked bad and within weeks he was overcome with them as if he was being eaten alive. Open sores on some of the smaller ones between his toes. It was awful. I don't know what caused it but after speaking to some professionals they are suggesting it could have even been a vaccine reaction. It's mind boggling to me since we have had dogs as kids that never had any problems like what I am seeing in dogs today. They all went from very old age and were super healthy. I don't get it. My best to you and your pup,

Dr. Sue, your video is outstanding. I am a pet parent of a 9 yr. Old female GSD. 4 years ago she had a small mast cell tumor removed from her side with no problems. Then in July of this year, a very small bump showed up on her muzzle. It looked like a bite of sorts. No, of course not. After 6 days we went to the vet and he said "I don't like that. . Oh there came that sick feeling. He did a cell drawer, and we waited 4 days for the bad news. We received a referral to see an oncologist in Raleigh NC Blue Pearl. It took almost a month to get an appt they are so busy. In the mean time we switched her reg vet to a different office. The cancer practices have three offices too. So she met with vet, they did 2 Ultra sounds and various other tests. Organs fine etc. They recommended a CAT SCAN bc of it's location. Impossible to wide margins in its location. 2 weeks later, back for CAT scan, its a 70 mile drive each way. Surgery was scheduled another month out bc of such a long list of patients. They also removed lymph node same side. There was some cells there and also some on nose they missed. Therefore she will be doing chemo therapy next month. One week after surgery her stitches wripped open. We tried to be diligent, but failed. She went back for more surgery, and this time they sewed a bandage in incision. It worked wonders. One week later they removed bandage, and one more week stitches were removed. Oct 19th we meet with oncologists to start her treatment. Right now she is back to her active self, walking 2 to 3 miles aday and a very happy face. I will tell you and your subscribers, this has been excruciating. We have had many pets, we are 73, but this baby has made us so happy and this cancer has broke our hearts . She is insured, but we used it up half waY way thru surgery. Total so far is over . $8000. I would do it again in a heart beat. The other thing we are doing is actipuncture. I had breast cancer in 04 and 05, and I used actipuncture as well as all the standard treatment. Also I make my own dog food with Lots of antioxidants. Our reg. Vet also practices homeopathic and traditional medicine. So she is a one stop shop except for this type of cancer and other difficult type surgeries. We are lucky to have found our wonderful vets. We switched family vet bc of discomfort with GSDs. It absolutely turned out to be a great decision. I wish all your patients excellent pet health and stay strong. Bless all your babies. And yourselves Christine and Yarrow various

Can you please discuss the financial aspect. For those who are lower income, we may have to make the choice between choosing to treat or not based on cost. Cost for cancer treatment in people is astronomical. Without insurance, no one would be able to afford it. I know with our pet, just her normal care costs are high with all the vaccines given today and everything constantly going up in price. So, what is the low- to high-end costs to treat these type of cancers? Thank you

We have a 90lb lab who not only had a mass cell tumor, but he also gets seizures. Our family has had 5 labs, none of which had either of these conditions. I just learned within the last 1.5 years that this is an issue in labs. I believe there is a coorelation between the two conditions, as if you look at the list of breeds which suffer from these conditions, there is tremendous cross over. Being in the medical industry, I read a lot of clinical papers and I ask questions. I've come to realize that doctors nor vets, (thank God for them both) have all the answers. As we know, an overproduction of hystamine cells is the cause of MST and there probably is a predisposition genetically or could it be a predisposition to allergies, causing an overproducts of hystamines. Maybe both. In the first 5 years of our lab's life, he suffered terribly from either bites or allergies on his paws. They would turn a firery rust color every year. We tried everything, shots, boots, washing, coconut oil, you name it we tried it Then it dawned on my, why not control the allergies and the production of hystamines. I began giving him Zyrtec 20mg, 10 morning 10 at night. My vet never thought of that, but thought it would be safe and worth a try. Spring and summer has come and so far, his feet look amazing. Very little licking and no sores. God willing, over time, he will never develop another MST again. At a minimum, he is much happier and comfortable. Keep your fingers crossed. Over time, I dropped the dosage down to 10mg in the morning and still, his feet look great. Control the hystamine production and maybe we'll prevent him from having another massive surgery. He was a perfect speciman, the most beautiful lab ever and he still is, but he now has a massive scar from just to the right of his spine almost down to his belly. Thank God the margins are clean but such a shame he had to go through that. Control the allergies and here's hoping your guy or gal never gets an MST.

My Clover has a mast cell tumor on her butt. Saw it Sunday evening. Vet appointment was Tuesday. Surgery scheduled for two weeks out. I'd say it's smaller than a pea and hasn't changed since I first spotted it. I'm a big proponent of pet insurance. After having a dog with diabetes for 7 years and no pet insurance, i wasn't risking that again. But I realize not every one can afford that monthly bill. If you can, get it! It will cover the $1500 high end estimate for tumor removal and dental cleaning.

My female Pitbull Jack Russell mix has two MCTs. One we took her in last week, had a sample tested, came back positive, tooknher back and had a node sample drawn, currently awaiting those results. Thr first MCT is the larger of the two. About pea size, and was the one tested. I just noticed a much smaller looking one and will talk to vet on Monday about it. We are praying we can get it all with a surgery. The bigger one is near hear nipple, and the other is in her pit in the same general area. Vet has her on Benadryl to shrink the MCT so in case we move to surgery she can get better margins. At least that is my understanding. We will know more next week. Our Kiki is the sweetest, prettiest, baby. Thanks for a very informative video.

My nine year old beagle mix was diagnosed with mast cell tumor on her leg, so we had her back right leg removed ($1000 in tests and then $2000 to have her leg removed). That tumor was very stable, and didn't appear to be growing. However, a new tumor started in her front leg at the spot where the vet injected the anethesia for that surgery. That tumor is growing fast. We have decided that palliative care only makes sense at this time, even though the dog is healthy (vitals, etc.) besides the tumor and now missing leg. We tried to treat with a relatively high dose of prednisone, but it made her ill and she started bleeding in her stools bright red. We now lowered her dose, but today she started chewing on the tumor on her front leg. The vet doesn't have a lot advice for us at this point, just to hopefully find an amound of prednisone that helps with the tumor but does not make us sick. What can we do to make her stop licking and chewing the tumor?

My little Chihuahua died of mast cell tumor within a few months of diagnosis. It appeared as a small spot on the skin, which didn't grow for several years. Then (as the vet said, coincidentally) after her vaccination it started growing. In a month it became a pea size. The tumor was surgically removed, but then within a few weeks it reappeared in another place and started growing aggressively. She took a round of chemo, which didn't help much. Then we started on Palladia. It helped in the beginning, the tumor was shrinking for a couple of months, but then tumor cells resistant to the medication started growing and the treatment stopped working.

A possible 3rd round of Mast Cell in my 8 year old yellow lab named Yeti. She hoes in for surgery on Monday.. What my vet suggested was we put her on Purina Pro Plan, Salmon and rice for sensitive stomachs and also Benadryl to help control histamine. Problem was, we cave in to her begging at the dinner table and gave her little bites of foods she probably shouldn't have. For example, she can't have any chicken or beef products or anything closely associated like Turkey or Bison. One thing my husband and i wonder is if her early exposure to high levels of cigarette smoke as a puppy. She used to belong to my father in law before he died abd he was a chain smoker. Has anyone noticed if their dog gets mast cell recurring in the warm months when pollen is high?

Dr Sue…. My 3 year old Vizsla was diagnosed with lipoma (lower right limb - above hock) that showed no signs of cancer when fine-needle aspiration. The lump grew dramatically to 5cm over the course of one week & still no urgency from vet. Second opinion from different vet showed MCT, which we had removed that same week. Dx = Sub-cutaneous MCT & no clean margins bc of size & location. I did TONS of research to get more educated, but I was frustrated to learn that there really isn’t a grading or typing for sub-cutaneous MCT. We’re now waiting for appt with canine oncologist at LSU in Feb., and I am dreading it. Please consider doing a vlog that differentiates between cutaneous & sub-cutaneous MCT in the future. It would’ve been great to know what questions to ask or what tests to push for or what the prognosis might be. FYI-I’ve watched most of your videos this week, and I’ve learned more from your vlog than I have from any of the vets I have encountered (in small-town Louisiana) - so THANK YOU !!

1st time sub, today I found out that my dog at 4 yr old is diagnosed with a mast cell on right, mid lower side. After watching your vid, you described his mast cell (classic) to a tee. However this vet suggested applying a animax steroid & then do a cytology procedure. They came back after doing cytology procedure and said a Mass cell tumor. So I feel he should have ordered the biopsy asap.... so now we have to wait longer than what I feel necessary! Anyway, I'll watch your vids from LA but this is rough. I just feel so caught off guard and in shock...

My dogs tumor grew to size of a baseball. Vet did not recommend surgery in beginning cause he said would spread the cancer and her old age. Her large tumor turned neurotic 2 yrs later, and some gangrene inside which vet said happens when bump gets large strangled the oxygen and it turns necrotic. So we put her to sleep as she was 16 yrs old. And it would continue to necrotize

If your dog has a mast cell tumor and you’re poor like me then you can put certified Manuka honey UMF 24+ on it topically while also giving your dog antibiotics and the tumor will form a tiny hole over time and then after a couple weeks the hole will get deeper and you keep putting it onto and in the tumor and after a month the tumor will disappear. It sounds crazy but I’ve done it to 3 different tumors on my dog and they were baseball size tumors when I started each of them. I can’t afford to keep giving my dog surgeries and it’s not ethical to have to give your dog surgeries every couple years. Manuka honey and bandages are far cheaper and less painful than cutting on your dog constantly. I tried to get a university veterinarian to look over my previous documentary videos of the honey tumor shrinking process start to finish but it seems none of these “medical professionals” agree with a natural and cheap pain free way to rid your dog of mast cell tumors. Sad world… Make sure you get authentic certified raw Manuka honey and not a knockoff. UMF 24+ MGO 1122+ Here’s a link to the honey from newZealandhoneyco.com that I personally use. I have also used ambrosia raw filtered honey but the Manuka seemed to work way faster. newzealandhoneyco.com/products/manuka-honey-umf-24-mgo-1122?variant=40313402065076

The more I read about this the more confused I am .This lady is pretty straight talking and I understand more but I didn’t get a grade or anything after they removed the lump-other than it’s a mast cell tumour- but this video explains the random hives and bumps- I thought my dog had a grass allergy that comes and goes! Thank you for the info. I appreciate your attention to detail. My girl, 6 yr old blue heeler, was just diagnosed and we saw her vet today. In January, she was diagnosed with autoimmune hemolytic anemia (scary stuff!). She has been on immune-supressive meds since then. We noticed the growth about a month ago on back side of her front leg. She has lost 16 lbs since Jan (77 to 61 lbs). She responded well to the immune suppressive meds and her hematocrit is holding steady at 39 (thank goodness). Since her blood levels are good, time to take care of the tumor. Now we are back on prednisone to try and shrink before removal, tumor is too large to remove as is.....question is: did the autoimmune disease cause this or did the tumor cause autoimmune?

hi! i'd like to get your opinion about my dog's case. She is 15 yeara old, she has a mast cell tumor in her back leg right above her knee and she has a heart issue (her mitral valve doesn't work has it should). So long story short, we treated the tumor with Palladia pills, corticosteroids and masivet pills but the tumor gets used to them and is getting so big, that we'll probably have to remove, my question is, how are the chances of her to get out well from surgery? our veterinarian said that it would be a complicated case because he'd end up with no skin to close it up once the tumor is removed because of it size..., would it be risky if theytake skin from her belly to close it up? i'm so woried, don't know what to do or think... please, any advice?

Is there a higher rate of mast cell tumors in dogs that get hemangiosarcoma? I am in a group that did a recent poll and diagnosed mast cells tumors seemed to be a pretty high comorbidity with hemangiosarcoma. If I were a veterinarian oncologist researcher, I would be looking into that connection. I do know that henangiosarcona can affect the skin, as well, but these are two separate cancers that 20-30% of hemangiosarcoma dogs are getting at the same time or just before hemangiosarcoma. We had our vet check our dog’s leg, because she kept chewing at it and he said it was just allergies. You could tell it was driving her nuts, as though it itched, but when we and the vets shaved her thick hair down we didn’t see anything except an open wound. My husband says he saw a lump there, though, during her last couple days of life after her arm had been wrapped and healing for awhile. She then died from extensive vascular hemangiosarcoma. The odd thing is, I am diagnosed with mast cell activation syndrome. I wonder if the spot that she was literally chewing through her skin on, on her front leg, may have been a mast cell tumor. It drove her nuts, like it itched severely. She was a standard poodle. They shaved the area and everything to get a closer look and it was a mess from all the chewing so we were caring for that. She was put on cephalexin which thinned her blood and that revealed the 8cm hemangiosarcoma tumor, due to a massive bleed. She definitely had skin involvement but we don’t know what it was; if it was a mast cell tumor or dermal hemangiosarcoma. I wish we had done an autopsy. She is cremated now, but I still have so many unanswered questions because besides that leg that she chewed on, she was extremely healthy, agile, and happy....until her vascular tumor burst and she started dying. We miss you Ariel. 🦋 Watch your dog’s closely for bumps and maybe get a second opinion if something feels off. 🐾

Vet said surgery to deeply remove it was around $1200. :/ Before we left she told us to give her 150mg of benadryl every 12 hours and om..some acid meds that i cant remember the name of. Anyway. Please keep me aware of how your journey progresses. My French Bulldog had 3 benign growths on her stomach. I wanted the Dr.s at a cancer center to take them off, first appointment she came back as healthy the lumps were benign. So the night before her surgery, I checked her. Being that we lost our boxer from mast cell, that a vet told us to wait and watch, I am a voice that tells all to get their dog to lay down and massage to find mast cell. I found a spot I also wanted off, so tiny that I can’t think of anything to compare it to, a M&M is much larger. Hers was a fleck. She went in and they took off with the others, it is mast cell. They told us that it was higher grade, and they are sending a panel in so they know what chemo to use. I found it one week after she was in there to be looked all over, ultrasound, anything and everything they could charge me for and they never found it, they called and we had to give permission for the panel to go to get her chemotherapy instructions. So this highly educated person told me that the little fleck of a mass cell tumor had come up in the period between the first appointment getting checked top to bottom ultrasound, bloodwork on and on, and now we have something with a high grade that came on during this time. I do not know what to do! Lost confidence in this place. I am tempted to volunteer to give dog massages at cancer centers. Do not know what to do

That sounds a bit pricey. Maybe check around for a less expensive vet? Is there a veterinary school near you? Some of them will treat your dog inexpensively if students can watch and learn. There are also organizations that may be able to help you. In Canada we have “The Farley Foundation”. This group fundraises and provides treatment for dogs owned by seniors, the disabled and low income persons. Your vet might be able to help you as he/she may be aware of the organizations in your area that can help you. There is usually a way if you look for it. Another idea I’ve heard of, is to surrender your dog to a rescue or no kill shelter. They will provide the treatment and then offer the dog for adoption. I’m not sure that they would let you adopt her back but I’d be honest about it and ask them. And if you can’t readopt her at least she will be alive and well. I’m very sorry you are going through this. I hope these suggestions help a little. I’m sure lots of people can give you more ideas. Don’t give up!

Hi, I had a question and I really hope you’ll be able to help me. My dog has a small lump (smaller than a pea) on her right foreleg. It changes color and the skin around it is inflamed. It’s also painful to the touch. My vet said that it is currently too small to do a fine needle aspirate on, and that the only thing she can really do for my dog is cut the lump out. I’ve read that you should never cut a lump out without having it tested first, but I’m so worried. Would it be best to just wait, or should I have the lump cut out? Thank you so much for your help.
