Doing My Own Powder-Coating (FOR CHEAP) 

Looks like a great little powder coating set up for your shop. I work at a engineering shop that does powder coating and have built multiple booths for painting parts from screws to car frames and flights of stairs. I look forward to seeing how this goes for you and that it helps grow your business. For bigger parts i would recommend that you look into a industrial convention bread baking oven that fits the 3x4x6’ ish baking carts.

Dan, don’t know if you’ll see this but have you thought about doing tail tidy kits? As a motorcyclist you’d know how popular they are, almost every motorcycle has a tail tidy. The kits are often very simple and a black powder coated tail tidy looks awesome. They’re often priced over $100+ so good potential for profits. Could be an idea. Another idea could be tail tidy with a plate flipper for “bike meets”. I remember seeing a guy online who made them, he got swamped with orders and ended up having to close his site due to the sheer backlog of orders. Anyways, what you’re doing looks awesome.

I design, cut, and powder coat for my full time job now. Pretty cool to know exactly what you are doing. Ill tell you the worst part is sanding the pieces before powder coat. But it is also the most important part is the prep work. Pro tip, get a belt sander it will make your life easier.

If it ever seems to stop or slow the flow, put the tip of the sandblaster on your gloved hand and below. The back pressure will reverse the flow and free up the glass, then try again. I put up with the one at my work doing the same

Dan, you need to connect a shop-vac (or something similar) to the blasting cabinet. It helps the powder to settle, and gives a more consistent feed to the suction tube. It also sounds like you might need to add a little more blasting media to the cabinet.

MIT powdercoat. Everything you need. Powder is relatively cheep. The have nice hooks that are small. Eastwood makes nice guns. Also. Sandblasting. Don’t worry about taking all the scale off if all you are doing is black. White and other light colors might need it but you will save so much time just using it to scuff them. Da also works good and pads are cheep and you don’t have to listen to the air compressor run all day. Lmk if you have any questions. Been doing similar stuff for a couple year so I can help as much as I can but if I don’t know I will ask my boss that has been doing powdercoating for 45 years. Good luck Dan. Remember. Use metal hooks that you can use to transport to the oven. Also if you have tight spots that are hard to get powder into, try preheating before spraying.

Dan, do yourself a favor and get a piece of stainless mesh the size of the window and put it in front of the window (inside the cabinet) and get yourself some combination of really bright LED's. It will keep you from having to screw with the mylar screen protectors and about once a year you will have to replace the glass instead of all the time. The bright lights will help the screen turn invisible. I used a piece of 12"X 40" 304 stainless #80 mesh and just sammiched it between the glass and the gasket. After that I've had to change the glass with some tempered glass about once a year. Also get yourself a dest deputy and hook it to the dust port and use a shop vac or even better, buy a Skatblast dust collector. It'll make the cabinet usable. Also at some point I would recommend a BNP style gun and a foot pedal. If you are going to continue doing powder in a single color (like matte black) also look at a better gun with a hopper so it will hold more for jobs and prevent you from having to refill as often. Once you mess around a little you'll probably end up building a bigger oven. The more you can powder at one time is just a productivity increase. Pound for pound the HF black powder is the cheapest and it works OK for basic black.

Check out the videos on modding that blast cabinet. The mods are a game changer.

Hey Dan sometimes the pickup tubes are weak and collapse when a lot of pressure is put through them. Could be why you don't get much media through after more pressure.

I have one of those sand blast cabinets. Did a bunch of mods and made a whole shop vac setup with a cyclone. After the mods that made the pickup completely different from that dumb siphon hose it works awesome. Also wired in a spotlight so I can actually see what im doing.

to avoid the hook mark but some mig welding wire or any normal wire will work and then you can just wrap it around the hook and the piece of metal. The mark will be much smaller if there is even one at all.

Get some bailing wire for your hangers Eastwood sells alot of stuff for powder coating also and I have there gun and oven also there bailing wire to hang parts and it works good to go from spraying to in the oven and I just use the racks so I don't have to mess with the parts

dan try to use medal wire for a hook it wont take up as much room and will be a lot easier to move around and you wont end up with the scufs after its in the oven

Those blast cabinets are nice once you get all the kinks worked out. They are extremely dark though. A few led strips on the inside makes a world of difference.

A tip is using some sort of wire I use fence wire but you use it to hang the part to the oven rack then just put the rack in the oven

when taking off slag, use the flap bit on the edge of the cut and not the flat surface. Comes off instantly

Hey Dan. As someone that's had plenty of experience running a monorail pass through media blaster in a steel factory that builds workbeds for trucks. You may want to look at different blast medias. Being steel frames you may have more ease and success trying a mixture of steel shot and steel grit.

I'm so stoked to get mine and get it on the car, I've loved this channel for so long.

I have the same blasting cabinet, search up on youtube there's a bunch of simple ways to greatly improve it.

If you decide to upgrade your cabinet, get a used empire blast cabinet. It'll blast a plate in 3 seconds. I use to blast professionally for aerospace, and those pressure pot blasters slap. The vaccum system that you are using is anemic. The pressure pot systems do require more maintenance, but you'll save so much fucking time.

Definitely put the hangers through the bolt holes that way when they put the bolt in for the plate and all it will be covered, I could see a small piece missed sheet the hanger was

With your problem I’d assume it’s just harbor freights blaster not getting a good Venturi or something when you have the trigger completely pressed, that’s the only thing it could be. Other than that, ALWAYS check the pick up tube..the media likes to stack up and not fall, so you could literally be blasting for 20 seconds and it stops because the media piles up away from the tube. Also, when you get the funds it would be good to invest in a vacuum system to keep dust down in the box so you can see what you’re doing

I've seen someone make a powder coating oven out of an upright gun safe lined with fire bricks, and oven heating elements. If you can source it for cheap, it may be worth it.

Dan there is an upgade kit made for that unit just look on line.

The glassbeads or crushed glass that you are use might be too big for the nozzle that is on the blast cabinet. One other thing cold be that the glass might be damp that could be causing the clogging issues.

hang all of your parts on the rack outside of the oven then put it in once theyre coated and the oven in pre heated

You can do powder coat touch up with a little nitro thinner on a brush. No need for plastidip

Just use steel wire to hang the parts, super easy to bend hooks for each part

The stuff your making will probably be more personal too sounds good

Maybe check your water filters on your compressor. Or you could always get more filters and it should work

On my sand blaster you have to hook a vacuum to one side of the box. Might be your problem.

Thanks for the awesome video Dan, Cool to se you getting into powder coating your own stuff I've done blasting myself before and always have trouble with the media flowing, I found using a larger pick up tube and routing it into a bucket was the only thing that solved my feed issue, Never really sorted it just sort of a temporary fix that got it working If you do get into large scale coating I'd love to see you build your own oven for it, if you get the demand Keep up the great work I hope your having a great week, Be safe and Take care out there wherever you are (^=W=^)

Dan put a regulator on your sandblaster, they arent supposed to be run at 120 psi, more like 60 psi

When it says 20 minutes @ 400 degrees, you are supposed to start the timer once your item reaches that temperature, probably doesn't take too long with the plate frames and not a big deal but if you are doing anything thicker that will take a while to get to temperature it will make a difference on how well it cures.
