Bro, thank you for this. This is my first generator I've purchased and needed this type of info. Getting ready for that arctic blast next week here in Texas. Thanks man!
@@Honestandtruth007 You're exactly right! I bought a 13K generator last week from HF. I don't want my family for days without power. You need to do what you need to protect you and your family. Can't be relying on anyone else.
Thanks for posting the video Korey. I bought this exact same generator last year. We`ve had to use ours a few times since last summer when we lost power in a few storms. I can`t say enough good things about ours. It runs most of our house, including the freezer in the garage. We run ours on propane because i don`t want to deal with gas and cleaning it out for storage when we`re not using it. I`ll be changing the oil in ours over the weekend so that its ready to go when we need it again. All i can say is, money well spent. I did all the electrical gen hook up`s to the main panel my self. I keep our generator in the garage, exhaust gets vented to the outside. I have a 15ft 50A quick connect cable that plugs right into the gen inlet box, and a breaker lockout on the mains. Hit that remote start, she`s runnin beautiful. After all the reviews i read, this was the right generator for us.
That’s awesome man! I definitely would love to be able to plumb it all from the inside of the garage, but I need the space more often than not and I’m moving them around fairly regularly haha. Eventually I’ll make a small shed outside to keep it in, safe from the elements and locked up. The generator is absolutely a powerhouse and is the perfect portable whole home generator in my opinion as well. If I had a propane hookup I’d probably run it off propane in order to keep the carbs from getting gummed up, but I’ll just keep running it every couple weeks to try and combat that. Thanks for the comment man!
Even though it’s vented outside, that can be very dangerous if something went wrong with the exhaust venting. Especially if your garage is attached obviously. I’d really consider if it’s really worth it.
@@KoreyB03 I have not broken it in yet. Do you recommend the 1 hour change oil 2 hour change oil and then 2 hour change oil and then after that put synthetic oil in so its ready for game day? This is my 1st generator so I just don't know
@@USMCSDI there are alot of different ways to go, but I’ve always gone 1 hr and then changed it after that. Then gone another 1-2hrs under a 50% load and changed it. Then I’ll run it another 1-2 hrs and then check the oil for any visible shavings and just made a judgement on changing it again. After that I change it every 50 hrs or if I run it for 15+ hrs at once I’ll change it. That’s probably overkill, but I need this thing to be dependable.
@@KoreyB03 Roger that! Makes complete sense brother. I am in Southwest Florida... been here since 1997 and Hurricane Ian left me NO DOUBT that I needed to make this investment
@@USMCSDI no doubt I’d have one if I were there! We’ve had some rolling blackouts here in TX lately and my wife works from home so we use this thing more than I’d like to admit. Be safe down there!
I got this same generator a year ago, and am just now getting it up and running. Working great. Quieter than I expected. When it's running I can barely hear it inside the house. I'm using gas now, but the propane option is interesting. My next step is to set up this generator in a permanent spot outside in a shed/doghouse, and make it as easy as possible to activate it during an outage.
I plan on doing the same thing. It never fails, the power goes out when aim not home and my wife has to drag this thing out and set it all up. Making it permanent is a must.
I have the same generator. But my central air won't work on it. I'm using the 50amp to power the whole house. My AC has an older Goodman condenser unit. In rush amperage is 74. I have a Micro-Air Flex soft starter on the way. Hopefully that will take care of the issue.
I decided to buy mine through home depot instead of home deliver. My theory was that there'd be a smaller chance of it getting mishandled if it was delivered via semi truck. I used to work at a home depot and everything got backed out of the truck with a pallet jack.
I probably over did breaking in mine (Champion 11,500) I did the 1 hr, 2 hr, 4 hr, 8 hour, 16 hr, 32 hr break in on oil changes (that includes using it during power outages). I put STP in the spark plug hole before I first ran it (and pulled it through 10 times before starting it) to lube the cyl. walls. I use VR1 racing oil in it and Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas. I know I over do it but I don't need it to quit on me when I need it.
I love it. I wish I’d have bought it first. My predator is awesome, but this one is bigger and exactly what I was looking for. Runs the 4ton ac and wants more. I’ve run some big welders for hours with it and had zero problems. It saved the day at one of my kids bday parties. Power went out in August here in Texas and this thing ran the kitchen/living room/ac and 2 inflatable water slide bounce houses. I’d absolutely recommend it.
It's funny but I got exactly same generator on Amazon 2 years ago, and like yours mine was damaged, mine badly, with crooked frame and busted stepper motor on its carburetor. The odd part was, that the shipping box didn't have even a sign of damage on the exterior, not even a dent, but damage on the generator was substantial. I'm guessing it was damaged at the factory, packaged and shipped from China anyway, but it's just my speculation. Amazon refunded my money and now Im trying to find youtube videos with stepper motor close ups particularly, as mine has completely missing those parts. Thanks for the great review!
Not sure what's up with the auto choke on these but if I push mine over manually it'll start first try ( even with a drained bowl), otherwise it'll go 3 or 4 cycles trying to start.
The auto choke is weird. I’ve honestly never tried it manually. I usually just let it do its thing, but if it starts first try I’ll give it a shot manually. I’d rather not have it cycling through 3-4 times like it does.
I bought this gen and just started it today on propane. The manual says to make sure the Eco Mode Switch is turned off, but I don't see a switch for that anywhere, is there one? I also checked the outlets and one of the 110 isn't working. The other is and the 30 amp outlet works, so what could be the problem? I tried pushing the small button at the bottom of the outlet, but nothing changes. I have contacted Westinghouse and was told they would contact me in two days.
That’s odd. Any time I’ve ever had a brand new engine there have been metal flakes on the initial break in. I mean, I’m no mechanic so I guess it could happen??? As long as everything is running good I guess. 🍻
I wonder why so many people change the oil before 5 hours as the manufacturer specifies…not judging, just honestly curious. I’ve also seen people using synthetic oil which they also say not to use…I’m going to do 5 hours under various loads myself and then change the oil. Nice video!
More oil changes never hurt an engine. There is debris from the factory. I personally plan to add oil and then change the oil before I even start it to get out any debris possible before running it. Bearings and cylinder walls hate debris. Then I will probably run it 5 mins and change the oil again. And then do the break in like this guy. I mean, it's about a quart of oil and such an easy oil change process, why would you be so cheap and lazy not to do it?
@@JetFire9 Has nothing to do with being cheap or lazy. I followed the instructions, did as Westinghouse suggested and my engine is fine. The debris help break the motor in. Why do you think it's called a break in?
@@JetFire9We don’t know what kind of oil is in new Chinese built engines. Five minute run then drain is a good idea. Some of the Chinese oil smells like fish.
Manual says 5w30 synthetic is safe to use for all temperature ranges. Also 10w30 is safe from 10degrees and up. So, unless you live somewhere where it gets crazy cold then either one of those is good to use. I use the synthetic in my mower so that’s what I use for my generator. This one takes just over 1qt. Manual says 1.18qt
@@KoreyB03 - That's encouraging to hear. I've been going back and forth on whether to buy one of the whole home (non-portable) generac/kohler units which hooks up to a natural gas line for the home, but the way I figure it, I could buy 2 or 3 of these Westinghouse units and still save 10 grand over the cost of the whole home units (once you factor in installation costs with certified electrician). So even if one of the Westinghouse machines fail I'd still come out significantly ahead cost wise.
How much oil are you putting in? The manual says to check the oil by NOT screwing in the dipstick but that doesn't seem right as it will barely read "L" on the stick doing it that way. I don't want to overfill/
Yessir, I have a 4 ton ac. It runs that, along w my fridge, kitchen plugs, and living room. I have to run an extension cord from one of the 110 outlets on it I to the house to the microwave Inorder to run it. Microwave always trips the breaker if I try to run the circuit it’s on. That’s all I’ve really ever put on it at one time. I’m sure it’s got more to go, but I just haven’t had any reason to run more than that at one time. As an emergency generator I’d recommend it every single time. It’s done amazing for me.
@@KoreyB03 Great. I just ordered the new 14500 trifuel Westinghouse. I installed a microair easy start and took my 5 ton in rush starting amps from 148 to 36! I immediately bought another for other 1.5 ton I have. I think I will be able to run everything but the dryer and oven. Was going to get the bigger twin cylinder but it looks like it would be overkill. I do like the pressurized oil pump, cooler and oil filer on that though but just isn't necessary for passing storms.
I love it. I have 0 negative things to say about it. It’s worth every penny when my power goes out and I can run the ac/heat, kitchen, and other rooms simultaneously. I’d buy it again no doubt.
@@iwagszit’s definitely possible. When my ac kicks on the lights I’m running dim pretty noticeably. Any other time there’s zero problem running the house w this. Even when I’m on main power my lights dim slightly so I’m thinking a soft start kit for my ac is in the future.
@@KoreyB03 Yeah, I'm have one coming Monday to put on my heat pump system. My Generac RS 5500 will run most of my house including my well pump but I keep the water heater, range and AC off. I'm in Florida and it gets very humid during and after a hurricane so I almost have to size up after 3 years of running this little guy.
Hi! I purchased the exact generator and the engine turned over but would not start. Now the return coil is stiff. I can't pull it! Has oil and gas. Amazon refund me and told me keep it. Any advice on how to unstick return coil? Thank you for sharing video. 🙌🏾🙌🏾🇺🇸🙏🏽
I’m no professional, but I’d probably start by checking the basics. Air, fuel, fire. Make sure you’re getting all of them. Gas to engine, spark from the plug, and air from the intake. As far as the pull start coil air take off the housing and go from there. Maybe the cord is stuck somehow or the spring is messed up. Lemme know if u get it working! I wish I could be more help!
I had the same problem bought mine from Amazon. Right out of the box it wouldn’t start. Pull start wouldn’t pull either. Contacted Westinghouse and they had me bring it to a Service center. They couldn’t fix it so Westinghouse sent me a brand new one.
Mine is having same issue. I have to start with propane which is easier anyways then switch over to gas to get it going. Then it will start using gas. Its finnicky.
I'm contemplating this or a smaller inverter generator. The only thing I'm unsure of is what people say about pure sine wave vs dirty power. Especially for electronics. Any thoughts?
So, I have heard all those comments as well and I do believe there is validity to them. I personally haven’t ever had a problem w the power this generator supplies my house with in the emergency situations when I need it. All electronics I’ve ever ran off of it have worked flawlessly just like they do w main power. Tv, internet, all kinds of chargers, laptops, iPads etc. ran the house for 18 hours straight one time and no hiccups at all for me. Hope this helps.
@@User-wr5vg excellent. I believe it was somewhere around a tank and a half. It was in the winter and I’d cycle the ac/heater off after every time it would run and then switch it back on whenever the wife and kiddos started getting cold. It I leave the ac/heat on the full time I’d probably only get about 6-8 hours on a full tank. Central air/heat puts a good load on it. I don’t have a soft start kit either and I believe that would help a lot during the initial power draw and load on the generator.
@@KoreyB03 Oh yeah that's understandable, I would be tempted to get that so I could run the HVAC if needed. One last question, how long does the battery seem to last for the automatic start? Is there an indicator of what the battery level is?
@@User-wr5vg I want to say there is a battery indicator, but I’m not 100% sure. I haven’t had the battery die on me yet so that’s good. I try to start it up every month or two and run it for those reasons Also. I’ll get back to u on the indicator tho.
Thanks man. I used 1030 synthetic. There’s a chart in the manual that says 530 synthetic is the best as far at any temp range, but 1030 is what I had on hand and it’s next best on that same chart so I went w it.
Kind of in the same boat as you were, ordered it on Amazon, ran it for to break it in, changed the oil, week later power outage happened, turned it on to use it, worked fine for 2 hours, then the engine started surging, everything flashes on and off. I didn't buy a new generator to work on it, so I contacted Amazon, they offered me a refund or a replacement, well I need it and I got a good deal, so a replacement will work. I can try hooking the fuel up direct or mess around with the solenoid, but I'm not even sure if I want to mess with it. What do you think it could be? (Same model as the one in the vid)
Man, I don’t wanna lie to ya and have I chasing problems that aren’t there. Could be a number of reasons it’s surging. Honestly, if a replacement is on the way then I’d prob not even stress about that one. Sell it and buy beer to keep in your cold fridge ran by your new working generator when it comes in haha.
My brand new one is surging from the day one...dont know what to do. Same here Amazon gave me my money back too..but now as a woman I cant figure out how to stop the surging.
Korey, Just got my generator. 9500/12500. For the first break in, use the 10w30 oil that comes with it, the can I go to a 10w30 synthetic for the rest of the time? For the other 2 break in time?
@@c-rob7615that I’m not sure of. I use pump gas and my generator sits most of the time so I usually try to keep some sort of fuel stabilizer in it just to help it from sitting up and gumming up the carb. I do run them atleast once a month for a good 5 min if they don’t get used.
Break in went good. The 2nd oil change had significantly less metal in it, but there was some. After that oil change I ran it w a small load on the generator and kept that oil in there. I’ll just check it before each start up and follow the manual from there.
All comes down to the unit and what fuel you’re running it off of I guess. Runs my 4 ton with no problems along w some of the kitchen circuits at the same time. I haven’t found the max it will run, but I do know it will run the necessities.
It doesn’t have an oil filter. It does have a fuel filter and air filter tho. If it did have one there’s no word of it anywhere in the manual. I’ve never owned a generator with an oil filter I don’t believe.
@@KoreyB03I have this same one and I’m just doing my break in period today but I bought this generator in 2021 but I never used it only started it here and there but I r always used fuel stabilizer and let the fuel bowl run empty to protect the generator. I will change the oil after break in because I have a lot of oil now so I can finally use the Briggs and Stratton oil for this generator.
What’s the best oil to run it on ps I’m no handy man I have no clue what I’m doing 😂 I pray I don’t fk it up so your saying run it for a hour and change the oil completely and continue the process two to three more times in 1-2 hour intervals?
Hahaha, it’s fairly easy so I’m sure u can doit! Manual states 5w30 is recommended for all applications and 10w30 is next best. Yessir, that’s what I do personally. There are a lot of different ways u could break it in. At minimum I do 1 hour under 0 load and change oil. Atleast 1 hour under load and change oil. Then I run it again for atleast 1 hour under a load and check oil for any metal shavings. Change it if u see any and if u don’t then leave it. 🍻
Yessir. After the 2nd run I changed it and put oil in it a 3rd time and ran it. Didn’t change it after that one because it looked good. So, I guess I technically only changes it twice, but put oil in it 3 times. Haha. Hopefully it helps. 🍻🤘🏻
This Westinghouse generator didn't Start in the Winter of 1-3-24. I have tried 3 different times to Prepare for an outage. 👎👎 It's so COMPLICATED TO START in the Winter
You’ve tried 3 of them and all 3 wouldn’t start? That’s weird. Theres gotta be something going on because even the initial one I received that was dropped somewhere along the line hard enough to bend the frame and sever wires started for me. Sucks you’re having issues.
Thank you for your Response Now I just bought a Champion inverter generator Tri-Fuel 9,000 watts. It Starts so fast in my START UP. Now I'm not Concerned when Power Outage comes 👍
@@KoreyB03 just a few phones charging and a light on. I turned the A/c off but I left the breaker on I wonder if I turned the breakers off to everything other than the water heater if it would work, I just figured it took way more electricity to heat the water thru it, I don’t have a normal water tank
@@andrewturner2338 yea that’s why I was wondering. Maybe the ac kicked on or something. Id think if that thing runs your ac it should run the hot water heater. I’m no professional tho. My 6500 ran the hot water heater. I did turn everything else off other than a couple kitchen plugs tho.
Champion Generator is much EASIER TO START...... just bought my Second one inverter generator 9,000 watts. No more Westinghouse Generator for me. The Starting Up is the pain and Complicated process.👎👎
