You are a kind, patient professor, who emphasises the importance of understanding maths (i.e. know the rules and how implement them and why) to be able to succeed. Or else one will be winging it until they crash (stuck in algebra).

1/x² ... as this was not expressed as an equation I can only simplify it. As you normally don't leave a variable in a denominator, you could express it as x¯². I don't know where to go from there.

Numerator rewritten as x•x•x•x•x•1•1 Denominator rewritten as x•x•x•x•x•x•x. Five of the x’s reduce to 1/1. Show that when teaching. Don’t just “cancel.” So 1•1•1•1•1/ 1•1•1•1•1•x•x. Then multiply across. After students see this a few times, then demonstrate the algorithm as a shortcut.

Why do you always have 1 [as a factor in the numerator]? Why not zero? If all the X's are cancelled, then nothing/zero is left.

1/1 = 1 which can be expanded back to 1/1. So 1 is a factor of any number - the factors of X = 1 x X In the example used, you could rewrite it as 1 x X^5/1 x X^7 The X^5 is cross-cancelled by the X^7 in the denominator - leaving 1/ 1 x X^2 You could argue that the 1's also cross-cancel, but the 1 is implied when it is followed by a term so is unnecessary, if no term follows, then the 1 must be used to distinguish it from zero as you stated i.e. 1/1 is not zero, but 1. edit - see Herlongian thread.
