This may be a help to students . There are two simple rules to remember: When you multiply a negative number by a positive number then the product is always negative. When you multiply two negative numbers or two positive numbers then the product is always positive.
Lord I wish I had teachers like you. So in my 20s I tried to go through college I had lots of hopes and dreams.Howeverof my inability to get math down correctly I failed my 99 algebra twice causing me to have to withdraw from college. I thought I wasn't smart in math so I was pretty much like most Americans it's the labor force for me. After 20 years in the labor force my back couldn't take it anymore. My kids were grown so I decided to go back to college to see if I could finally achieve my dream of at least an associate degree. Once again I am in that dreaded math class, and I come upon my worst fear fractions and integers. I excelled at everything else. I stumble across your video and you just unlocked like my biggest stumbling block. So sir when I graduate I sincerely have you to thank. Now I am going to binge watch all your videos and turn my greatest fears of math into my greatest achievement. If I had had teachers like you 20 years ago I could have been living my best life so long ago, without the injured back.❤❤❤❤

Yes, that is what I said about adding and subtracting; use the number line. I can remember the rule about the multiplication and subtraction, but I'm not seeing the logic.
The thing that helps me keep pos and neg numbers clear in addition and subtraction is to visualize a number line, each sign telling me the direction to move on the line.
If only such rules or processes were stipulated from the beginning some of us would have loved math but hated it so much coz of the inexperience of the teacher to simplify or have a different approach in making sure the student understands the concept. technically subtraction is addition and 3-7 is in actuality 3+(-7) this is why addition and subtraction is at the same level, because subtraction is a mathematical fiction.

Some people have trouble because + and - serve a dual function: 1) as numeral signs; and 2) as operational indicators. Perhaps a signless number should always be thought of as an absolute value.

I am out of college now but I SO WISH I saw these videos when I had to take math courses because I STRUGGLED, STRUGGLED in math especially when it went beyond simple addition, subtraction, multiplication & division!!!! Watching your videos makes math easy & I find myself WANTING to tackle math equations. Thank you SO MUCH for your patience, caring & your easy methods of handling math!!!!! Great intro to signs 😊. But beware, a few years later you may encounter a+/- (no division, just write + on top of minus) = b-/+, (write - over +), realize this simple notation results in 4 equations to look at . Might even be worth a separate vid on this 🎉

It's easier to think of the number line when adding and subtracting positives and negatives. I have to think about why it is different for multiplication and division. ( The answer is probably logical but I have to walk it through my brain) Your lessons are really helping me, but could you explain the logic regarding the rule in the multiplication and division?
what about this? -x÷6=3. Every time I try problems like this I get them wrong. and the rules described in this video don't seem to apply. It's either that or this free Algebra for Beginners app has bugs in it. 😢

When dividing 12/-6 = -2, to check multiply -2 * -6 = 12 same with multiplying, for example -3 * -2 = 6, to check 6/-2 = -3. Add/Sub. 3 + -5 rewrite 3 - 5 = -2, or -4 + -5 = -9 rewrite -4 -5 = -9, you are adding to negatives. Hope you understand.
At the 12:32ish mark you didn’t explain why you added a minus sign after changing the minus to a positive, and left the 5-. Huh??????? I’m so confused!
probs bc he said those are the rules when subtracting like he did in his first example, 3 - 7. he changed the operation to addition (+), and added a negative symbol (-) besides 7, so it basically looks like this: 3 + -7 in the second example he put 2 - (-5), apply the same rules he did from earlier by changing the operation into addition (+) and adding a - symbol besides (-5), therefore it would look like this: 2 + -(-5). The negative symbol is outside the parenthesis
