Dollar General Workers Walk Out Over Extreme Heat 

My niece worked for them and she told me absolute horror stories. I thought at the time she was exaggerating, obviously not. she quit.

I stopped into a Dollar General the other day and bought a candy bar to eat on the way home, but it was too melted to eat. I thought, that's odd, and then realized the cashier had had a box fan blowing on them and it had been swelteringly hot inside. I thought it was just a bad AC day at that one store, but now I'm thinking I just witnessed what these people are talking about - terrible working conditions. I will write to the company and complain, plus say I'm not interested in supporting them any longer.

I worked at a dollar general for a short time and it was awful. The store was in poor condition. It had a bug problem, water damage, hardly ever mopped or swept etc. The front at the registers were super hot because of the sun shining through the windows. Last but not least, my manager was terrible! She would snap at me for not grabbing a cart as soon as it was returned to the cart corral outside and bringing it back into the store. At the time I had an agenda I was told to follow every night and was always in the middle of taking care of a customer, counting cigarettes, doing more pressing tasks etc. And this woman would lose her mind and would embarrass me. I quit and never went back. In no way did I deserve to be treated in such a manner every night.

Dollar-General is just another giant rip-off of the employees, the customers and the stock holders.

Horrible! I've read how mistreated their employees are, and have sworn to never darken their doors again!

I worked for DG for the last 8 years. As a manager.....finally had enough and left about four weeks ago. They are awful!

Good for them to walk out and get such an immediate reaction. We have more power than we think!

I have a long list of companies that I no longer support. It is getting hard because apparently every business treats their employees like trash. I'm running out of places to shop.

SOOO many companies across the US are like this. I wish everyone who is not making a living wage, would all walk out in unison. And all places that are making a living wage, should stand beside them. Abusers must go.

Got the exact same conditions in Japan. It’s awful. Black mold everywhere. Holes everywhere. All the windows and doors are open (no screens) so there are bugs everywhere. No A/C, no heat. There’s like two months out of the year that’s tolerable. Floors are always wet in the bathroom because the drainage system was poorly designed and they don’t use mops, just buckets of water.

I’m currently going through this. My manager doesn’t care about us. They are lying to us about who’s supposed to fix the Ac. I live in Memphis and our heat is extremely too much to work in a hot box. I’ve been written up for things that have nothing to do with anything but I know it’s because I don’t have the strength to work through the heat. It’s sad and I’m thinking about taking this to the local news

This is such BS and there is absolutely no excuse for this kind of treatment of their employees or their customers!🤬 That’s too bad Dollar General cause I have been a huge customer over the years. I will not patronize any company and I do mean any company that mistreats their employees like this and refuses to pay them a decent living wage!! Bye Bye Dollar General! You will not see another dollar from me!🖕🏼

I have never been to a Dollar General and I’m not starting now. That’s horrible.

The dollar general in Sheridan Indiana doesn't have any air conditioning. Just a couple fans located throughout the store

I was a delivery driver for DG almost 4 years. Walked away at the end of March. Covered the Midwest region. There are "maybe" 100 stores that are qualified as legit shopable locations. Meaning clear aisles to shop safely. OHSA would have a field day with this company. Hundreds of locations have been shut down by the local Fire Marshalls! Its inhumane how the company treats the store employees in every aspect. It isn't a cake walk for delivery drivers as myself was. I know that every employee needs their job in the rural areas where most stores are located. My recommendations to you is. Walk out for a few days. They need you more than you need them! That would crippling them financially. P.S. They plan on replacing a few of you away with the "self check out" sooner than later. I've delivered to this particular store a few times.

Former store Manager here. I went through the same situation. Temperature inside was 98 to 100. Coolers went out Food spoiled. Medicine went bad they forced to work only in the morning until they finally shut us down.

They are so cheap they totally neglect their stores and the employees within. They shouldn't be shocked when workers start standing up for better pay & conditions!

Geez. It sounds like their stores are shite holes. Youd think the customers would be very unhappy too!! Power to the workers!

I am a customer and I always have my kids with me. Well recently an employee told me there are no public restrooms. They said corporate told them not to let customers use restroom. If you have children or are elderly or even disabled you may need to use a restroom. I think it is because they don't want to pay to fix broken toilettes and leaking sinks. Sometimes it is just easier to say well lets go to walmart just in case the kids have to go to the bathroom. I found out Walmart is cheaper since I was sort of forced to go where there is a bathroom.

Just as the occasional shopper at DG, I can confirm I've seen most of these conditions firsthand. I've been in a few that were hotter inside than outside. Also been in a few that literally had ONE person on the floor. ONE.

I stopped going to the Goodwill stores a long time ago, I will boycott this corporate slave ship, too.

There is a dollar general in a little town called Whitesulpher Springs NY in the first year that it was open the ceiling was leaking in many places through out the store. They litterally built the building from ground up and almost immediatly it started happening. Unfourtunatly this is the only store that is on my way home, I either have to stop there or go 7 miles in the oppisite direction to go to a store. The people that work there would probably never do this. I was talking to one of the employees and she was complaining to me that another person that applied for a job there was lazy, because she was only interested in working certain hours because she already had another job. I said to the employee that she really needed to rethink what she said because it was the stupidist comment anyone has ever made to me.

The way I saw employee's treated also, I had to stop and talk to one. She broke down in tears and I told her to quit, not look back that it was criminal what Dollar General CEO was doing to them - slave labor! No Air conditioning in 110F heat and rats all around building.

Real change starts at the bottom thru organizing. Lets defeat our rapacious oligarchy, join a UNION!

Much of this can pretty much apply to all DG stores. Those 80+ degree days in the store are awful and at mine not so great for the produce we sell either.

If Americans cared about freedom as much as they say, they'd vote for a single payer healthcare system. American's wages are suppressed by healthcare costs to employers. America's are locked into pointless jobs because of a reliance on employer provided healthcare coverage. And even then, your healthcare and prescription costs are 5-20x higher than other developed nations and your private insurers provide dramatically incomprehensive coverage. Not to mention copays, coinsurance, deductibles, increasing premiums that negate raises..... Vote Americans. Vote.

It's not just the store. It's not even just Dollar General. It's the US. Listen to their complaints... and compare them to the overall complaints about our lives in this country. Yeah. Zoom out a little.

I'm a vendor who visits at least one Dollar General every day to deliver product. The stores are a joke, in shambles and managers are over-worked and under paid. You couldn't pay me enough to work in one of those stores.

I challenge CBS 60 minutes or 20/20 to investigate Dollar General! They need public investigations into what I have seen! Show it prime time!

I worked at dollar general for 18 months and I have to say you guys are absolutely right. I remember getting my foot near frozen in negative 40 degree weather working there I will Never work at a dollar store again

2022 I just left after being there for 1 month. Worst company I have ever worked for. Computers must've been like 15 years old and they refused to fix the AC.

Never had an issue at the DG I work at but when I worked overnights at Walmart in the winter they had no heat. It was freezing cold and on top of that I had to stock the frozen food in the freezers terrible. Not saying Dollar General as a whole is good because I know not all stores are the same and for example the one the next town over is filthy but personally I don't mind my store. My store stays clean because our store manager is big on having it that way. The family dollar behind us alot of people say they won't go there because that store is a mess for example.

I have seen it with my own eyes. The CEO of Dollar General makes MILLIONS but treats his workers like peasants. I quit shopping at Dollar General due to no air conditioning and rats around the building unafraid to move as I got in my car and drove away! CEO should be fired!

I worked at the grocery store where the heat was only set between 55F and 60F during winter. At least it was also that cool during the summer, felt refreshing when it's like 80 or 90 outside and it's 55 or 60 in the store, but winter is kinda cool.

Why work there, just quit, like this poor women. I don't shop there, the wrong pricing , cluttered isles, exit doors blocked , .I'm done with this poor excuse imo of a retailer.

I can testify to that I have been going to Dollar General stores for years I am 61 years old and every time I’ve ever been in one it has been so hot you could not even shop and that I always or just always feel of jump and it’s like my husband said it’s like walking into a junk store like a rummage or something nothings ever put up on the shelves everything is just sitting out in the Dalles you can’t get through you can’t find anything it’s just not a good way to shop it was to go through that’s the shop and needless to say plus all the robberies where we live there they’re getting robbed like every other day so I just wanted everyone to know employees of Dollar General that went through all this that we are praying for you.

I work at one in Louisiana and our ACs are always out! As long as we making money for them, they don't care. It gets hot as hell in the summer and it's currently out right now😠

During onboarding /computer training process. They made us watch a video on how unions are bad and to report anyone trying to start one.

I worked for Dollar General for 2 1/2 years. And I can say what these former employees are saying is the DAMN TRUTH!!!! Dollar General is the WORST COMPANY TO EVER WORK FOR! They do not care about you, they only care for these signs $$$$$$$$!

The way they treat thier coworkers shows thier heart... we are mistaken to think everyone has a heart, money is thier God screw everyone else but one day the piper comes

I went to Dollar General once and it was so filthy I never went back. Cheaper isn't always better.

Are the stores franchised or company owned? All the stores in my area are fairly new so maintenance isn't yet an issue but I've noticed that short-staffing is built into the operation so they simply burn out employees and replace them like Henry Ford did before the unions.

I work for dg and have nothing but great experiences with them here in Cincinnati.

Dollar General all employees walked out and corporate headquarters didn't even check on it remains closed for a week know.

Some of the dried food products in plastic packages tasted moldy one year in another city. Batches and batches. I would sample some periodically and over a year, every package had unseen mold. But when I got them at a competitor, they tasted fine.

I would have walked. Won’t shop there again. Where was Osha

Both the dg in my area are hardly open most times 😂 not sure if it’s the pay, or the hours, but they’re always short staffed. I considered working at one when I was in school, but they never listed their pay and still don’t. I’m assuming it’s not worth it if they can’t keep people.

Dollar General needs better management and leadership. Their employees deserve much better than their work conditions, their health care plans, and their wages. If you compare a 38 billion dollar revenue with 170,000 employees nationwide, something doesn't add up. Shame on you Dollar General.

The store down the road from me was closed today for extreme heat. I have never been in there when it was uncomfortable. This may be true for other locations, but here the workers don't want to show up.

Sounds like workplaces prime for OSHA reviews.

Allow me to layout how companies like Dollar General Work. My dad is a General Manager of a Dollar Tree in Florida (not the same company but essentially the same). He has been the manager for 13 years. He is a salaried employee who makes roughly $61,000 before taxes. (He is one of the highest paid managers in Florida because he had 30+ of district manager experience at Krystal Foods before Dollar Tree. Years ago Dollar Tree would offer quarterly bonuses, which for GMs pending on performance would be between $1300 and $1800 dollars. That number has now fallen to roughly $900. Previously if a GM made a $1600 bonus, each of their three ASM's would receieve roughly $250. However, not only did they reduce bonuses for GMs, they eliminated them for Assistant Store Managers. Dollar Tree claims they compensated employees by raising wages but that is not true. It is nowhere close to what bonuses meant in yearly income. As an ASM at Dollar Tree you have all responsibilites the GM has, except for bank deposits, scheduling, hiring and payroll. As an example, my dad had an ASM who was an amazing worker. She was paid an hourly rate of $12.75. If your wondering, that's less than 25k a year. For months she asked my dad to advocate on her behalf to his bosses to get at least a dollar pay raise. They refused over and over until she eventually had to quit, she has a family to provide for. This is what happens, they flip employees over who have built up sick time and PTO, slowly squeezing every bit of energy out of them until they give up. New ASM's are now offered $13.50 an hour. Which equates to about $1440 dollars more a year than my dads old ASM. My dad firmly believes Dollar Tree denied the raise because she had 175 hours in PTO built up which is about $2230. It would cost less to hire a new employee at a higher pay rate an hour then keep the employee who when they finally get fustrauted enough, quit and forfeit their PTO. In my dad and his old ASM's case, Dollar Tree has won.

never work at dollar general me and my brother worked there he was there for 4 years i was for 3 they fired him for blaming him for stealing 9000 dollars and he was a store manager he wasnt gonna risk everything to be put in jail he dont steal the sad thing is trusted a lady that i thought wasnt 2 faced wouldnt imagine in 3 years she would tell my district manger to fire me and my brother for not having proof of my brother stealing or me when i didnt do nothing wrong even my brother so im sharing my story

Dollar general kills, their semi driver have taken lives, under trained , no idea where their at, in june of 2022 jonesboro ark, to save 15 mins to next store, driver ran a stop sign, speed down a back residential area road an killed the 1st car of 3 he hit, killing the driver of the first vehicle. DG has never even said sorry to his wife, bet the court will.
