Howdy. I just wanted you to know that I think it is a high class thing that you did here. You admitted that you had made a mistake, and then apologized for it. It shows me that you are a strong person, able to be responsible for your actions. In 2020, I thought that level of class was a thing of the past. So thank you for showing everyone how it is supposed to be done. Regards, Bob

The man that came out at the end of the song is Porter Waggoner.... She wrote that song to him... to tell him while she loved him as a friend, mentor and boss and appreciated him taking her under his wing in the music industry, she was ready to move off on her own and leave the show... but she would always love him.

Dolly wrote this for Porter Wagoner who gave her her start in the business. She was leaving his show to go out on her own and wanted to thank him. He initially was ok with it but turned sour on it and her when his ratings slumped without her. But when he was in dire straits and needed cash, he put his entire music catalog up for sale. She bought it and then gave it back to him later as a gift. When he was on his death bed, she would sit with him and sing to him. I Will Always Love You was a number one hit in three decades in a row. 1970s when she wrote it and first recorded it. 1980s when it was on the soundtrack of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. And, then in the 1990s when Whitney Houston covered it and took it to number one. Recently, it was honored in the multi-star video, Forever Country: Artist of Then, Now, and Forever @. She once jokingly said, "Whitney can have the credit, as long as I get the check."

Just a few years after this song was recorded, my wife’s father died unexpectedly. They were extremely close. He was only 44. She was only 24. After we went to the funeral, we were sitting in the car and I turned on the radio. This song began playing immediately. My wife broke down again, telling me that this was her father’s way of saying goodby and that it was OK to move on. I’ll never forget that moment and this version will always be my favorite.

Like many have written, Dolly Parton wrote this and was the original singer of it. It has a lot of meaning for her. At the time, she was leaving the Porter Wagner show and going off on her own. She was a staple on his show and from what I had read, he had a hard time accepting it. Just before he died, they reconciled and she performed this for him in a tribute. :)

imo, Whitney was a powerhouse unique talent and we lost her way too soon and tragically. She was a singer, not a songwriter, whereas Dolly was both. But Whitney was so good she could take any song and turn it into something amazing. Which is what she did with this song. Two different versions, both playing to the strengths and beauty of the singers. I like them both.

@jeffdetmer4681
@jeffdetmer4681 4 года назад
Hi Quay. Yep this a Dolly song. Whitney was an amazing singer, but she was not a song writer. Dolly has written over 3,000 songs. In fact she wrote this and her song Jolene on the same day! She had gotten hired as the girl singer on this TV show back in the day, The guy who came in at the end was Porter Wagoner. It was his TV show. After a few years (which is what they agreed to) she decided to go off and do her own thing. So she wrote this for him to say thank you and goodbye. He didn't take it well and said some unkind things about her. They didn't speak for some time. Years later after Dolly got big, Porter fell on some hard financial times and was forced to sell his music rights to all his songs. Dolly bought them so he would get a good price, and then gave them back to him as a gift. When he was in the hospital just before he passed, Dolly would go to his hospital room and play and sing for him. She is the sweetest woman. When Tenn. was hit by terrible flood damage she gave away a ton of money to people to help them get back on their feet. Keep exploring and keep smiling. Stay safe and well.

This is one of those happy surprises when you think you understood something...only to discover that it's even better than you thought! Even when you are 100% sure who wrote, originally recorded, or covered a song, it's a great idea to visit secondhandsongs.com and look at the song's history. Enter what you know (Dolly Parton, Whitney Houston, I Will Always Love You, etc), and click "Go." secondhandsongs.com is a huge database of song and artist histories. Currently, it "knows of" 106,000 original songs and 889,000 covers! For this song, you will find a listing of 176 versions -- beginning with the original you're viewing here, and including Whitney's 11/2/92 cover.

To my knowledge, the only person Dolly turned down (for this song) was Elvis & only because his management wanted 50% of the publishing rights, which she wouldn’t do. Licensing a song isn’t personal. It’s business & Dolly is a sharp business woman. She’d need a good reason to turn someone down, not the other way around (she doesn’t need to feel someone is “worthy” of her song). Dolly has licensed other covers of this song. In fact, it was Linda Ronstadt’s 1975 version that Kevin Costner 1st played for Whitney Huston.
