Good learning material... Sharon brought an intelligent, sensible and fair analysis of this complex and difficult topic. Violence and abuse is never the right way to deal with conflicts. It comes out of emotional immaturity that is either inherited or learnt from poor examples. It happens in every culture and every country and is only improved when more mature people show better examples of how to deal with problems.

I wouldn't be as far as I am in speaking Chinese if it weren't for the WEALTH of materials and presentation methods you make available. You not only teach but you teach us to teach OURSELVES. A great presentation on such a difficult subject. I always learn alot when I listen to your videos.

When I lived in China I heard it going on above me, to the side of me, to the other side of me... (especially at night as I was lying in bed). Mostly yelling and screaming, but also occasional thumping and banging (followed by wailing). It's a lot more widespread than people think. Maybe I noticed it more there than in other places I've lived because everyone lives in such close proximity, and the walls are not well soundproofed. I think work stress and financial stress were probably the main causative factors (this was before the pandemic). It's a world-wide problem, thank you for addressing it in such a mature manner!

One of the best channels to learn intermediate Chinese. I enjoy the series of podcasts very much because it always talks about the most interesting topics concerning Chinese society. Of course, it's very useful to learn real Chinese. Kudos to you, Eileen, and your team. By the way, Eileen and Sharon both have southern accents, one Jiangxi, one Guangdong, but they speak so clearly that it's very easy to understand. From my perspective, if you have the trouble of speaking Mandarin as a northerner, you can definitely try to speak like a southerner, it's much easier. I'm a southerner too, hahaha.

Many mixed emotions after having watched the video. On one side i’m so glad about this video and it’s content, since i’m learning so many new words and expressions, on the other side, some of the stories being shared are truly heartbreaking. At least (as you mentioned in the video) it’s becoming less and less common. Good video nevertheless!

Wow a great topic , happy to see it is being addressed in china too. I had the experience of trying to report a domestic violence happening in china and the police would not even go to the people door even though it was very loud and obvious as to what was going on. the world has a long ways to go but in the end things will work out. thanks for doing topic that all societies can learn from.

Thanks for bringing this content! Domestic violence was not less before , it's just being reported more and more, women are having more courage to talk about it. In Brazil every week you see a case of domestic violence and murder of women .Although the law exists it isn't enough to protect women

First, thank you for a very educational video. Second, a comment on domestic violence in other countries. We have similar problems in USA. I know of several instances where women were beaten by men and they kiss and make up, only to be beaten again and again. Regarding China and USA differences, married people in USA usually live separate from their parents and in-laws, so violence from in-laws is minimal. When a woman marries and lives with her in-laws there is so much potential for conflict and eventually abuse. Hopefully that is changing with better education of women. One other difference between USA and China, sadly, is the amount of guns in USA. Too many domestic violence incidents end up with women being shot and killed by an abuser.

Great video, your content is second to none. The content in this video was very valuable, it is important to discuss such issues. Perhaps you could consider the topic of disability for your next video? Most Chinese people I meet have a very limited understanding of people with disabilities.

That story about Fang Yangyang was really sad, It's hard for me to understand a family not havin the right to protect female relatives, especially closely related ones, daughters, sisters, first cousins. I am from the Southwest United States and am familiar with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation American families of Mexican descent from both sides of the border. In general, men marry into her family, and she usually has several brothers who are watchin out for her.I know 2 men who hit thier girls, the 1st, her brother and uncle beat him badly, the 2nd, her brothers caught him alone and really beat him bad, her brothers showed zero mercy. As sad as the story is, I really appreciate this and your other videos. I started learnin Chinese 2 weeks ago and can now say 11 simple sentences. I listen to your videos and tiktok popular Chinese music, I think its bubblegum music, its easier for me to make out the words. Thank you Eileen for this content and thank you to your guests also!

We are the same. Period. I will never believe otherwise. Incidently i have 3 technically jewish kids, 2 hispanic kids (in spain) and 2 asian grandkids. Can someone explain to me what the difference is? I do not understand. I know 50 computer & 11 spoken languages yet I do not understand why (,usually. But not always) men hurt their partners. That is sick, but women do it too. I know from personal experience.

The video says there are approximately 4.26 million victims of domestic abuse in China every year. To put this number in perspective, US domestic violence statistics report 10 million victims every year ( ncadv.org/STATISTICS ) China has a population of 1.4 billion, giving us an estimated annual domestic violence rate of 0.3%. The US has a population of 328 million, giving us an annual rate of 3%. In other words, domestic violence is 10 times more widespread in the US than in China. Similiarly, according to evaw-global-database.unwomen.org/fr, the rate of "Physical and/or Sexual Intimate Partner Violence in the last 12 months" are: - Germany: 3% - France: 5% - UK: 5% - Italy: 6%

Very interesting. I just read the English subs while listening out for Chinese words I could follow. I think you Eileen and your business assoc. Sharon do a great job tackling these social issues which may otherwise be exposed by an anti propaganda source. That is to say, I think many issues you cover are 'swept under the rug'. Language wise I wanted to ask if there might be another way to become a member as I don't feel safe using Wechat. Of course, for those who live in China Wechat is the main app but if you live elsewhere then maybe not. Do, what about paypal etc?

Unfortunately they exist are a part of society but only by talking about them and confronting them can we successfully tackle them Please talk about the drug problem in China such a heroin and ice addiction. Like in the west I understand China has areas where every family has a family member addicted to drugs. Would be interested to know the Chinese view on drugs, popular drugs among youth and attitudes and acceptance of them etc

?! In America domestic violence may be directed at the husband by the wife. As a child I saw my mother physically abuse my father many times. He mostly lived in our basement to avoid her. I never saw my father ever strike or abuse my mother; he would just walk away from her. It was like that til he shot himself thru the head in our basement (he was “shell-shocked” (PTSD) from WWII). I was married to a women who convinced me she was abused by her first Husband. It didn’t take long before I realized she was the one starting the fights with her X. I was assaulted many times by her but most I laughed at her and walked away. She was only 106 lbs and certainly no physical threat. My mother was much more vicious. I saw her trying to push my father down aiming to make him hit his head on the sharp corner of our piano. I also seen her try to push him down the stairs to our basement; a dirty fighter. She was overweight at about 160lbs. I grew up w/ sisters and knew to never hit a girl.

You're wrong that domestic violence is more common in the rural areas than in the cities. Psychical (passive) abuse is as fatal as the physical one, and in the cities there is much passive abuse fueled by lust, pride and love of the world. In general, the more populated a city is, the more miserable it'll be.

No matter what one should never abuse another person in no way or no how because it is wrong and when people abuse someone it damage,hurts,destroy and kills people,in China man and woman should have the same rights,who give the men/women the right to abuse one another this is wrong and if the government,lawyers,judges,police and the suspect does not do something to correct their cruel actions all of them should be held accountable because they have the power to do something about it and did nothing.All those leftover girls and women should not be looked at differently or treated differently,do you know how that makes a person feel,all these things is wrong,if all these bueatiful,strong,brilliant,hardworking girls,boys,women,men who built and who is living at present in China tolerates domestic violence,abuse and discrimination then what's the point,why are we here what are we doing.

Great podcast, but in general abusive men will reveal their true colors within months of dating. They don't abuse because of stifled emotions or too much stress, but because they know that violence and anger outbursts will cause their wife to spend every waking moment working to please him to avoid his wrath, so the men end up with a live in slave. Since that's their ideal relationship, they aren't going to waste more than a year playing nice when it would be much faster to find a more insecure and easily manipulated girl to date. I believe that each partner should aim to outdo the other at being selfless, caring for, and pleasing each other. Hold your wife/husband in the highest regard and always try to build them up. One of the _many_ reasons for women to submit to the men in their lives is because men have always protected women. As a man, if your wife or another woman is undermining you or chipping away at your masculinity - whether publically or in private - it can affect you in a range of ways. From simple embarrassment or danger at that moment to serious identity struggle and lack of confidence in social situations if it continues. Why would you want to weaken your own tower? Initially, I disagreed that a woman should obey her son (if her husband dies) as she would her husband or father. It seemed like a cultural idea that might be out of place today. But after thinking more about it, I believe it's right. The son should always respect his mother and her advice but ultimately he should be shown as much respect as the amount of responsibility he takes on - which is continuous because his role is to become the head and protector of his house. A woman's role is to hold him up. A lot of people won't like to hear that, because their views of the idea are tainted, but it's true. Defined roles just work. Look at nature and at history. The opposite is chaos and lack of productivity. The only reason people disagree with the idea at all is that bad men have abused women and made them desire power and freedom. The problem isn't in the concept though. It's in people. A traditional family unit where there's love is the best. It's when there's a lack of love that things fall apart. Love isn't about romance or attraction, it's about choosing to put others before yourself. Mark 12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. 31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. Your neighbours are all the people who live around you. Jesus, God's spirit in the flesh, demonstrated this by serving people all his life, washing his disciple's feet, dying for all of us, and praying for forgiveness for those who mistreated and killed him. He showed that the highest person is the one who lowers himself the most. That same man will judge all of humanity one day, yet he humbled himself. Likewise, the man is the lion of his household but should be gentle as a lamb with his family. Again, I'm sure people might take issue with me quoting the Bible, but there's nothing more apt and true to quote because it's all routed there. The origin of the Bible is the origin of life. It's the answer to all of our problems.

If you need police to solve family matters then it’s better to just let go. The best way to solve family problems is to have the parents talk to each other and if they can’t come to the same solution then they should come up with an exit plan. Using police as the main solution for family problems is only digging a deeper grave.

I've seen men beat women on the street in Shanghai countless times and in the multiple apartment buildings and lanehouses I've lived in here in the 4 years I've heard women screaming like they're being tortured an innumerable amount of times. What is going on in the lives of these men that lead them to beat women? I've never seen anything like this the western countries I've lived in.
