Domiplan 50mm f2.8, Meyer Optik Görlitz' worst and cheapest lens, but I like it!

The Domiplan is regarded as the worst lens in Meyer Optik's portfolio, so I never really considered buying it. This summer however I got it for free , so let's put this East-German lens to the test. Spoiler: it lacks sharpness, but has more character than your average vintage nifty fifty.

I just bought this along with a 35mm German camera. You’re right. For commercial work this looks like junk, but for street and life photography this is exactly what I want and will never get rid of it!!!

Had one for a while, incredible bokeh, sharp as a tack wide open in the center and has loads of character. Well worth what you pay for them if you're a creative shooter. Straight shots have a very odd and distinctive look to them, one thats hard to describe but desirable. Be sure to CLA them though, they're well known for having Haze and loads of dust on the inner element surfaces. Once clean they're SHARP.

I've passed up this lens so many times because everyone always said it wasn't any good . Looks def. useable from 5.6 . I like it . I'll consider it the next time i see it somewhere.

It's a fun little lens because it's different from the usual 50mm lenses. Before buying make sure the aperture ring works though. I've read that a lot of people have stuck apertures

I bought one this week in pretty much perfect condition. Everything works crisply too. The seller even had a hoya filter protecting the front element. After using it a few times I can now proudly say that I own a decent Hoya filter.

I have one that I use adapted for some of my street photography. The softness of the lens is actually the look I want for those images.
@ohjajohh
@ohjajohh 2 года назад
Yes I understand :) The soft character makes it unique from many other 50mm lenses.

Hi ohjajohh, I've always fancied trying a Domiplan - I have the 50mm Oreston, which is an awesome lens and I fancied comparing it to the Domiplan. Clearly the Domiplan isn't fantastic, but sometimes you can add real character by using a less good lens, particularly to a moody video clip. I know what you mean about trying to focus wide open with one of these not so great lenses - you can spend ages rocking the focus ring backwards and forwards to try to home in on the least soft point (I can't call it the sharpest point because they're just not sharp wide open). My Helios 28mm is very much like that, but I still like the atmosphere is gives to the shot.

Hi Tim, well said. This is the type of lens that will do wonders for a certain type of moody clip, but not so much if you want a tack sharp modern production. I like the Domiplan because it's different from the 'average 50mm'

You want to try the 50mm Meritar. It is even worse. I also have a Domiplan with a working aperture. The way that the diaphragm linkage works makes me think the lens was originally a pre-set like the Meritar. I received a Praktica MTL5 at Christmas 1985 and in the packaging the available 50mm lenses were listed: From Pancolar, Pentacon, Tessar, Domiplan, Meritar. I never saw a M series Praktica with a OE Pancolar, Domiplan or Meritar. I was thinking that in later years the lowest lenses were to be found in the DDR internal market cameras.

I've never came across a Meritar yet, but I'm interested in it now. I'll put it on my wish-list :)

How to get sharp focus at 2.8 ? Since one month has gone to using this lens but .5% photos I got in focus @2.8
@ohjajohh
@ohjajohh 2 года назад
I use focus peaking in combination with the magnifying function on my Sony to get things in focus at 2.8 I know it's not easy to get sharp focus with this lens, but it's doable with a little bit of practice :)

Maybe you are not sure how to use the Meyer Optik 50/2.8 Domiplan? And I mean no offense by that. At f2.8 it actually shows rather incredible detail surrounded by a soft glow, the glow is uncorrected spherical aberration of the triplet (Cooke) design (a design that is about 130 years old). Use it wide open for a head and shoulders portrait of your girl friend/wife and she will love you for it. The detail in the eyes will be there but her skin will exhibit a soft glow (makes her look younger too). Outdoors stop it down to f/5.6-f/11 and the sharpness will be there, although still a bit mushy in the extreme corners. It's great for landscapes. The 50/2.8 Domiplan, like most Meyer Optik lenses, are today mostly known as "character lenses." One just has to learn how to make maximum use of that character. One can easily buy a plethora of "sharp" lenses these days, and for not much money. To buy a lens with "character" one typically looks to the older lenses. Thankfully many of them are still rather inexpensive compared to most any clinically sharp modern lens. I believe one should have some of each in their bag. Thanks for the video.

No offense taken, thanks for your comment. :) The more I use this lens, the more I like it. When I shot this video, it was basically my first time trying out the Domiplan. I now know it performs much better as a portait lens indeed and I'm actually considering buying a second one as it's so cheap and nice to have.
@d30gaijin
@d30gaijin 2 года назад
@@ohjajohh A second would be good. I've kind of been on a Meyer Optik buying binge of late. Two 50/2.8 Domiplans (one a Q1 designation, which is an East German Zeiss Jena designation), a 50/1.8 Oreston, and Pentacon 30mm f/3.5 (actually a Meyer 30mm f/3.5 Lydith), and a 50mm f/2.9 Trioplan. Two years ago I bought a brand new (current manufacture) Meyer Optik Görlitz 50mm f/1.9 Primoplan and was so enamored of that lens I sought out other older (and much less costly) Meyer Optik lenses. They all exhibit similar image characteristics that I have come to love. I have other very nice Leica and Sony lenses but I love the rendering of the Meyers. My wife won't let me take a photo of her with anything but a Meyer lens. LOL

That's true, but some people like blurry, because then the skin always looks good on a portrait :)
