I really want to see you succeed and enjoy beekeeping so I'm going to offer some advice I hope you find helpful. You shouldn't harvest honey on brood combs. Even in horizontal hives, the bees will make frames of just honey if they have extra. Only harvest some of their extra honey or they could starve. You want to make sure they have enough food to get through any dearth you might experience and winter. It's pretty common for new colonies to not have enough honey for you to take any the first year. It depends on your climate and flow or flows. Also, you may want to wash your suit and gloves because they are likely covered with alarm pheromone from the bees attacking you. That could be what got your other hive so worked up. It might make for a more peaceful beekeeping experience for you and your bees. I hope you take this advice in the spirit it was offered, and find it helpful. I've found there is always something new to learn when it comes to bees. Happy beekeeping!

@@whitehouseonthehill I love you and your family. I also love bees and have kept them for several years now. Something I learned from my own mistakes is to set up a table near your hives. Bring a journal and a pen. Write down EVERYTHING you do and see each time to go into your hives. Were the bees aggressive when you first got them? What did you see and how did they behave on their last visit? Any queen cells, hive beetles, varoa mites, spiders, evidence of mice, damage to the boxes, predators, the weather can even be factor. Learn when it is good to take honey and when you must leave it for the bees. There are many things that can make a hive become aggressive besides a queen with bad genetics. Beekeeping is so much more complicated than looking for a queen and getting honey for ourselves. Hope you take my advice with the love that it is given.
@TerrieAllred2023
@TerrieAllred2023 3 года назад
I have been reading a lot of the comments here, and why do many beekeepers assume that if a hive gets aggressive, they need to replace the queen? Yes there can be genetically agressive queens, but there are several reasons why a hive gets pissed. Ever think it could be the beekeeper and not the queen?

As a Dr., I have learned first hand about anaphylaxis folks! Not to be ignored as when a person gets stung multiple times, that “next time” could be the one that causes a full on severe allergic response? So the viewer who suggested both keeping Benadryl on hand, and even an “EPIPEN” (Yes! Expensive however, compared to your family member’s life, the cost is extremely negligible Jake. My wife is very concerned about Becky and her pregnancy, and I fully agree with her, why even be near the bees, especially now that we know Becky has been stung and who knows how many times? If you in fact carry out these recommendations Jake, that means when you are at your neighbors, or where your hives are far away from your home, you should carry a small bottle of Benadryl (25mg tabs) on your person! Hopefully you understand we all care after seeing your video? It has nothing to do with “fault” by dropping the bees from the tree, as you were trying to help your friends? However it has everything to do with safety and prevention. Be safe and Best wishes for your “new addition coming soon!” ☺️🤗

You need a better quality bee suit. The design of your kid’s bee suit is actually much better than yours. The round head part keeps the neck and face from being stung. I honestly can’t fathom why you don’t invest in a proper suit for yourself. You have the money to do so. So why not? It’s not worth the risk to continually get stung and chance Anaphylaxis. It can develop at any time in your life and you and your son clearly swell up quite a bit from bee stings… which is a bad sign that you guys may already be slightly allergic. Please take care of yourself and get yourself a proper bee keeping suit. Not a cheap one, a high quality one. Also, if you don’t have any BENADRYL on hand in your cupboards at home, I suggest you get some and keep some in stock. Even getting some Epipens and keeping them on hand in stock while you deal with bees could save you or your family’s life. An ambulance might not always be able to get there quickly enough. Don’t wait to rely on an ambulance that could take 5-15 minutes to arrive..and by then it could already be too late. Benadryl, some EPI-pens are a small price in cost to pay in order to protect your family’s life…or even the lives of visiting family or friends. When you deal with bees it is extremely important to keep these things in stock. Please don’t risk it. I’d be sad to see anything happen to you and your beautiful family. Sincerest wishes, be safe friends!

True, but bee stings are really only dangerous for a small amount of people. When I had bees I preferred to just get stung a little on chest down for a while due to mediocre equipment and eventually built an immunity to it and had no reaction to it anymore for years.

(1) Never harvest from brood combs (2) replace all Queens that are aggressive as soon as possible (3) Always check if your bee suite is completely closed (4) Wash the bee suit / gloves to remove sting pheromone (5) Don‘t use parfums or don’t shower before you go to the bees. (6) Don‘t eat banana before you go to the bees (7) Don‘t try to hit bees who sting you otherwise you spread the alarm pheromone to the others and they become agressive (8) No aggressions = no stress = more concentration. Beeginners must (!!) have calm genetics! Otherwise you will give it up soon (9) Don‘t let honey dropping in the hive. It could drop to the ground and other bees might get interested and start to attack the hive from where the honey drops from.

I did Google about this- Honeybees will actively seek out and sting when they perceive the hive to be threatened, often being alerted to this by the release of attack pheromones. ... These pheromones do not dissipate nor wash off quickly, and if their target enters water, bees will resume their attack as soon as the target leaves.

Jake you should think about re-queening the yellow hive, they seem too aggressive. Another tip is to use a water spray instead of smoke, it calms them, they drink it and clean each other, much easier to deal with the bees then. I have been keeping bees for 3 yrs in the UK and my methods have changed and my bees are calmer. Good luck.

So much wrong with this video, Don't hang your swarm boxes so high that you can't retrieve them easily and safely for you and the bees ! There is absolutely no need to hang them that high. And collect the box late in the evening or very early in the morning. So all the bees are back home in the box. And why, why, would you want to take honey from a frame full of brood (baby bees in the cells) ?? That really blows my mind, totally destroying all that work the bees have put into those brood frames. And you can see the larvae being squeezed with the honey, so there is larvae juice in your honey! You just don't take honey from brood frames never, and there wasn't a little brood on that frame, it was full with babybees !! There was just a little bit of honey on it! Pls, pls, read a good book on beekeeping, join a local beekeeper group.

A lot of beekeeping is honestly pretty simple and straightforward, but when problems arise or in this case - catching a swarm goes wrong, then it can get crazy. Most channels are bee breeders/sellers. So they have many years experience and they have 100’s of nucs to work with. I’m sharing my experience from 3 years of experience with bees, so a lot of things I’m encountering are fairly new to me.

Bee keeping is really enjoyable, you should still get some, Creator- I like your video! Split the yellow hive, cutting comb and banning to langstroth hive will do for brood box. Also, you should loosing plant wild flowers there, let the grass blossom, " looks like someone has been mowing it"

I appreciate your honesty for posting this epic fail video, its so sad to see you all get stung and the bees so upset . We know you are trying but there is no harmony between you and your girls even though you mean well and love them . Maybe invest in a new bee suit with better face protection as you have taken way to many attacks in this one . Please reach out to an experienced beekeeper in your area who can spend some time with you and teach you how to flow with your bees and listen to them .They will always try to tell you they are angry before they attack you but you still carry on and it ends badly . Its ok to get it wrong as then you can put things right and start again with more knowledge and ive no doubt you will have some lovely calm bees to work with :-) Ps: hope your all ok from them stings .🌻🌺🥀🌹🏵

Where's your smoker to calm and Control the Bees? Also you should reach out to Charles Apiaries here in Texas about acquiring Queens. They come Down from North Dakota every winter to Graft and make Queens to sell. Then transport Them back up North for 🍯. I'm 56 now but as a child I would go in shorts and halter top, barefoot and sit on hive next to one they were working and watch. I NEVER got Stung. Shirley and Chris Charles are like family to us. My two cents... a few cut 2 x4’s nailed to the tree for your swarm box to sit on will help. Then strap the box to the branch, it will keep it way more sturdy than just strapping to a branch alone. Also, duct tape your lid down until you get it out of the tree and maybe not so high up next time. And.. taking honey from mainly brood frames is really not a good idea. Your scraping off the top of the comb and scrapping open brood cells and possibly even scraping eggs from surrounding open cells, into the honey. Good luck!

That suit probably still reeked of alarm pheromone from the morning's dropping mishap, which would have aggravated the other hives you worked on that day. Give it a few days to wear off before you try to inspect another hive to avoid setting them off! Also, I'm sure others have pointed it out already, but it's much better to harvest honey from frames that aren't being used for brood - better for the hive and easier for you!
