Mine was all dead....I had about 30 workers and a queen. I had caught a swarm, and they were drawing comb, so I kept the bees and queen in an incubator and fed them honey from last year's hive. Took 18 days until I could put the queen and her workers, she had 4 left at that point ....into a nuc, and add a couple bars of brood that was due to hatch. I'm Happy to say I now have 2 thriving hives. Queen started laying on mother's day. Congrats on yours as well

I remember in undergrad zoology learning that bees can go into a hibernation state in the cold, and then as it warms up their metabolism kicks back up. I saw it with my own eyes in the lab too working with bees. The bees looked dead. But bringing them back out into the warm room and they’re ‘lol not’. What an amazing evolutionary adaptation. They’re survivors!

I want to get into bees so bad. We purchased a little homestead of 3.5 acres last February and then the world went to hell in a hand basket. I took a bee keepers course the week before our state shut down and have yet to get back into it. Instead, we have been working on growing our chicken flock and planting a small orchard. I’m hoping to get started spring 2022. I’m hesitant on how many hives I want to under take. Our neighbor has three and I’m thinking about just keeping one hive. My worry with just one is, not having available resources to rob between hives if things start to go south. It was interesting to see how you were able to save these bees and had everything, even a new queen cell ready in your other hive. It makes me re think only having one hive, as we definitely have room for way more than one in our orchard space.

I might also add to make sure the comb is right side up. The mouth of each cell is higher than the bottom or rear of the cell. The bees do it this way to minimize the contents from running out.
@ShiningSakura
@ShiningSakura 3 года назад
For the future, when bees pull apart a queen cell you put in a hive, its because there is already another queen in the hive. Also if you give a supposed queenless hive a frame of bees that are young enough to become an emergency queen and the bees don't do make a queen, that also is a sign that they have a queen already. The only other thing it could be is a laying worker, but that is extremely rare and you will see only drones being laid and often multiple eggs being deposited in the cells instead of just 1 since they cannot do their job proper like a queen can.

That's pretty heart warming. Glad the hive survived in the end, and that you had a job for he queen you ordered during the original's disappearance. That reminds me a bit of something that happened to me this summer, on a totally different scale: I worked on an apricot selling stand and we had a storm rolling in. Cold winds, rain, a truly terrible weather. While making sure I wasn't getting the boxes wet, I saw a bee had landed on the stand's counter. I took her in, so she wouldn't be as subjected to the wind, and tried to both give her a bit of food and as much warmth as I could muster (mostly body warmth coming out from my hands). As she wasn't back to health when the time came to close the stand, I took her home in a makeshift box, and was glad to see her more active by the evening. The next day was still cold and windy, and the bee less active than the previous evening, but by the mid afternoon, sun came through and I placed the bee with a bit of watered honey on a sunny spot. She quickly became more active, and eventually took flight a few hours later. That was pretty insignificant in the regard of the loss of a single bee to a hive, but it made me happy to help the little fellow.

I thought they were all dead. About 45 minutes later they started moving again. Good thing I had them in a bucket. Lol. Out of 2000 roaches I only lost 12. So the queen cell you crushed is actually probably just a queen cup. They will make practice cups pretty regularly through the year. Check them for eggs. If there are no eggs, they'll take them apart all by themselves. If they are requeening a recently introduced queen, it usually means she is poorly mated, or something else is wrong with her. I'd let them replace the queen, especially in packages it can be common if the supplier was short on time or they had a long winter and rather than do the right thing and wait and confirm they are mated, they just ship the bees.

I used to have some chickens and guineafowl in together as well. When there were several guineas, the male was mean to all the birds except for one female guinea. But when all the guineas took off and all that was left was the one male, he actually was very protective of the hens, body-slamming and chasing off the roosters when they got too crazy, and even chasing off the bigger chickens when they were bothering new baby chicks. It was very strange.

Alaska keeper here 🥰 For these cold days I have insulation frames on either end of my hive. I make them out of foam insulation. i also use Bubble Reflective Foil Insulation on days colder than 40F just a single wrap around the hive.. It's especially good for those new packages that don't have the numbers to help stay warm. And could help reduce casualties if this ever happens again. You will have to take out 2 brood frames but they can be taken out as soon as warm weather shows up.

Came from RU-vid's recommendation after watching an ant keeping channel, seeing how differently queens are treated within the ant and bee Kingdom is super fascinating!!

I feel so bad for the poor bees. They make honey for us, and sometimes they sting us, but be grateful. They only sting when you mess or hurt them

White house on a hill: It’s been a year since you made this video, so perhaps you already have this figured out-just in case though: if you’re going to hold any bee by the body, you’re actually covering up the breathing holes that are along the sides of the body. Those are called spiracles. As long as your fingers are on the sides of those little bodies, you’re actively preventing them from breathing. It was really smart of you to take advantage of that moment when they were already slowed down to mark the queen, but you just need to hold them differently. You can pick them up and sort of hold them by the legs on one side, or better yet, ask a local beekeeper to show you how to do it safely. It’ll make a huge difference for the times when it takes a little longer to get something done when you have to handle any of your beloved insects.Your hive will thank you.❤️
