An anime about past mistakes correcting the past mistakes of its movie… kind of.
Scott Pilgrim vs the World took the younger generation, one much more intertwined with and open about “nerd” culture, by storm, becoming the poster you saw in plenty of video’s backgrounds. Following the relationship of one titular Scott Pilgrim and his crush turned more Ramona Flowers, it takes an interesting route to analyze how we deal with past mistakes, namely by punching them in the face. Scott has to fight Ramona’s seven evil exes, a league gathered by the most evil of them all, Gideon Graves. In this journey their flaws are explained, from Scott’s messy breakups to Ramona’s flighty turns in relationships. As these flaws become discussed and apparent they almost split, however the pair comes together at the end having learned a lesson that past mistakes don’t define their future… kind of
Because while they learned that the past didn’t predict the future, they never found a healthy way to actually lessen the impact it would have. By literally fighting the past, they never learned what they needed to from it. And so, I never saw them having a happy ending… and apparently some people agreed with me, as seen in the new Netflix anime adaptation, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. It forms an alternative timeline parallel to the movie (vs the World), which explains and analyzes Ramona’s character in more detail, and shows the end result of what Scott learned from the original, while playing with the idea of “fighting” a league of seven evil exes. While not perfect, this new anime (Takes Off) does add depth to the original story, in a meta way learning from the franchise’s past mistakes

The show really saved not only Ramona's character, but also Roxy and Lucas...at the expense of Scott, Envy, and Todd. People have said it, but the comics have so much more depth to everyone in the story. Ramona believably loves Scott, Kim is a very strong driver of his development, and he reconciles with all of his exes by the end. *Most importantly* - Scott doesn't earn the power of Self-Respect. He earns the power of Understanding.

@@ProfessorViral I highly recommend the comic, it's a LOT better than the movie. Won't spoil it since you plan to read it someday, but it addresses a lot of your points, and makes Nega Scott something a LOT more interesting. The twins still get barely any screen time there either though. Still, not having read the comic doesn't make any of your points about Takes Off in this video less relevant, since it seems the series was also made for people who just watched the movie in mind.

@@ProfessorViral most definitely! I think there are actions that are unforgivable and make me wish a hell exists for them. But then it’s complicated with brain chemistry and upbringing. I’m torn on free will, can you truly choose whether or not to be a monster? Am I the way I am by chance? Do we even make decisions.

@@deathmetal6546in my opinion, you can in fact, be able to make decisions on your own, be able to actually be "free" but not all people do or can. You gotta follow a very difficult and rigorous path, follow a trail that's paved with self reflection, values and the idea that everything that's not your own is not valid. Only those who are able to reach the top with responsibility are able to break free from all of the things that bound you to others.

I appreciate you putting this together so eloquently. Ever since I finished the Anime, I had this feeling that the Scott Pilgrim comic (and movie) were about what O’Malley learned from his marriage, but that this new show is about what he learned from his divorce. I couldn’t really put it together myself, but I think you hit the nail in the head. Great stuff! 👍🏻

I never thought about how its a split off from the movie timeline and not the comic, I always thought with his development from the comic future scott shouldn't become that way and it ruins his development in that series. Makes a lot more sense as a movie alternate timeline since he has a fraction of the development there.

I think in a way you’re underestimating ramonas hand in the situation, Scott himself was in the future and she as well admit to the fact that she ran from their relationship over one rough spot and refused to talk it over, it drove Scott crazy and she didn’t even attempt to look for him until 10 years later with her only excuse being “I needed space” Scott is a fool who can’t handle situations properly and hurts others and Ramona is a coward who refuses to face them all together

We definitely get to see alot of scotts nasty tendencies at their worst but ramona pulling something close to what happened with roxxie with an actual marriage on the line without also fighting for eachother like she said scott could of during the last fight is also shitty as hell. Its like wallace says in the comics last chapter. They truly are meant for each other (or smthing along those lines i dont feel like actuslly combing through the comic rn lmao. The way I watched the series was by going back and forth between watching the anime and the Live action movie. It was an interesting experience because I was basically seeing the evil exes being a-holes and getting destroyed right before seeing them get characterization and redeemed in some way (though this order didn’t really go that way for the case with Roxie and Gidian since their redemption came relatively early in the anime). I also like how certain anime scenes were basically references to certain scenes for the movie. For example, the Wollace stunt doubles jumping Remona in the anime might be a homage to Lucas stunt doubles jumping Scott in the movie.

though the series is actually an alternative timeline that branches off from the graphic novel. they are more similar in how they act in for example that asking out ramona, compared to the movie. the memories vr experience scott goes through when he goes to the future also supports that, with the image about the twins looks like one of the fights from the book and not the amp vs amp fight from the movie. Because of this future ramona and older scott have actually grown more than you do think because in the books they surprisingly change for the better and learn from their mistakes. That's how their marriage survived for 13 years. Now why they - or mostly older scott - go back to being really immature i don't know but yeah you should read the book sometime

Just going to point it out. Old Scott isn't definitely the future version of Movie Scott. He's a possibility of Scott's future. He's a possibility of the movie and the anime's future. It's a bit confusing as it is a time travel story now. But to put it simply. Future Scott is not the definitive future.

honestly after watching the show, i knew that couldnt have been everything and searched and watched the movie. then i read all six issues of the comics in like 3 days. i usually dont read comics that much but this is the first comic series that has had me son invested, that i read the entire amazing story in a couple days, which is something that i regret. i shouldve taken my time reading it but i didnt know it would be so good. i honestly felt empty after finishing it as i realized that nothing more of this quickly beloved franchise i read and watched would probably ever be produced or written again. i like the comics more than the show but i understand that people may like or may not like the show better because the comics are kind of old. people who read the comics all those years again are more than amazed and satisfied at the reimagination of scott pilgrim takes off aka ramona flowers takes off. i honestly felt dissapointed because the name of the show lead me to expect that i would actually see scott pilgrim more than i actually did. inspite of that, the show is still peak and revived scott pilgrim's precious little life. hope you get to 100k soon!!!

I mean seems like they teased a possible season 2 at the end if u watch through the credits and its been really popular so id say theres a really decent chance this gets a s2 Or a sequel series season as scott takes off doesn’t rlly make sense for a 2nd season if scott a main character again which i rlly hope we get to see scot and ramonas relationship develop cause we barley got that in the show

I'll say, a lot of scott's character in the comic is him being genuinely so forgetful, he's probably got some sort of mental disorder. He forgets everything basically, especially about his relationships, forgetting basically everything about what his relationship was like with kim, and what his relationship with envy was like, and forgetting why the breakup was so messy, and why they broke up to begin with, respectively, it's a thing

You should really read the comic. Movie -> Anime -> Comic is basically the ideal watch-order. The movie ends with them as shitty people whose relation probably won't work out in the long run. The anime shows the consequences of that, but while Ramona reckons with her past, you're still left with doubts about Scott and his future. The comic then squares the circle, showing a story where Scott confronts his own past. I don't want to spoil anything, but I will say that the Scott at the end of the comic could never become the 'future Scott' of the anime. Basically, all your lingering doubts about what exactly you should be taking away from this story, if you read the comic it just clicks. Or at least it did for me.

Sooo were just going to ignore the books? There are several things in the show that only make sense if it's based off the books instead of the movie (robot 01, mainly). Plus, the books ARE meant to be analyzed, and nega Scott is treated way differently.

I think the movie is still great, even watching it now as a different person from when it came out. Knowing a character isn't a good person doesn't spoil it, some of the best stories are built on awful people. I think the anime existing shows how we think about what happens after the ending matters, and we can be right to think it won't really be a happy ending

It seems like youre overthinking again. From what ive picked up (and ive only seen the live action) , Ramona is a flawed character but she goes about confronting those flaws and what they've done to others around her. Rather than just walking away from the mess, she at least starts the process of making amends and changing her ways. If thats what makes you want to be like her, then send it. There's nothing toxic about that Ps. Some of your videos are rather intense - like i need a cigarette after watching them. This one however has a great message as always but just radiates a lot more hope. I like it, thank you :)

I just dont like michael cera, nothin wrong with him pathetic, but it would work better if he is a more energic jerk that can sell the fights better. Like wallace and the cast is perfect, but seeing comic scott, i think michael cera has a limited rage , through he seems way better in voice acting. but in the movie, jesse eisenberg would probably have been better .

I think Michael Cera is great at what he does, but I think his usual typecasting made him an odd fit for the role. He performed it very well I think, just in a way that never struck me exactly as something Ramona would like as a character

I agree, personally I think Michael Cera is the one who least resemble the comic character he's playing. I still like him as Scott and he sells the naive and carefree side of Scott very well. But appearance wise, Scott is supposed to be attractive, he's actually a good looking guy in the comic and there are a lot of girls like him (even random girls at the mall). Michael is not ugly but definitely not attractive enough for random girls to fall head over heels for him

I summary SPvstW is the from a teenager pov, things pass fast, you act like an asshole, but is okay because you look cool, while the anime series is from an older/adult person pov, remembering how childish you acted and that hurt a lot of people, so you amends an apologise for all that

The movie timeline is not the timeline for the show since there’s small events like young Neil being called old young Neil in the future when he got called Neil by the end of the movie and the fact that Scott hated the fact he fought the exes as old Scott while movie Scott appreciated it as a way to get self respect, this is obvious guys 🙄

Then it's a timeline very similar to the movie, I think what I said here still stands with respect to that. Without considering the movie, future Scott has almost no development, so I see them as a package deal
