My question for you is how much are you able to say, as a realtor, about the negatives as well as the positives? We need a complete picture. My fiancee and I are seriously considering moving to MI (from WA state. love it here but too expensive for us). We've heard mostly good things about MI, including your video, thank you. But we still know next to nothing about the state/places to move. It's pretty scary going in blind.

I've lived in Michigan all my life. I'm a registered native American Indian of The Sault Ste Marie tribe of Chippewa.This is a very beautiful state. The 4 seasons are a big plus. The winters here are nothing like they were in the past due to the change in the jet stream. I'm in southeast Michigan, of my 6 sons, 1 lives in Marquette, another son lives in Traverse city. There's no other state I'd rather live in. Last year I traveled over 3000 miles by car, this truly is a beautiful state.

@@cryst2huNo, it's definitely not having weight restrictions like others states do. If you go in areas outside of the major manufacturing areas the roads are fine. The problem is due to the manufacturing because all those automobiles and other things require heavier loads which causes more wear and tear on those frequently traveled roads.

Moving to the metro Detroit area for residency (medical). Coming from CO. I hated CO. The fact that we have a home secured with a two car garage, a yard and in a relatively safe area for less than the 2 bed studio we had in Denver tells me things will be alright. Sure, it’s not “optimal” for some folks. But I’m older, with a family and looking to commute from home to school and have my family set while my finances grow. I think it’s a great area as long as you stay away from trouble and I do like the affordability compared to other states. I’ll be living in the suburbs and commuting to work away from the “hood”.

We are coming from North Dakota... so we aren't worried about winters. Stats show michigan only averages 65 truly sunny days per year . That's with no clouds . The remaining 300 are either straight cloudy grey days or mild cloud cover . Cold days last from October till about June , Temps ranging from -7*f at worst to 65*f best for those months . July till about end of Sept are usually 70 * f to 90*f and almost never anything less then 70 % humidity if not worse .

People coming from warmer climes may have no awareness of how tremendously snow tires improve traction on snowy roads. If you move here, get snow tires for your car. Its a bit annoying to have to swap them with all-season tires for the warmer months, but once you buy them, you've got two sets of tires for your car and its a long time before you have to buy any new ones.

The truth is it does matter where you live in Michigan. as to how much snow you get... you may get ice in one area you get it snow in other areas. you may just get cold it does it just depends, but the one thing you have to know as that is ran democratically. the economy is destroyed. there are no jobs here. What there is the wages are low. I remember growing up where you saw the old plant and saw the olds plant in the skyline and it's gone the jobs are not here in Michigan. We have the same type of weather, I grew up in Algonac, so I’ve been all over Canada . And for the people, don’t make this political, there has been Democrats and Republicans running Michigan , we have always had rotten roads. It doesn’t matter who’s in charge.

Michigan is one of the places i am considering. I am shocked at how high the property taxes are. And then to read that roads in many places are not well maintained. What is the state doing with all that tax money?
@LivingInMichigan
@LivingInMichigan 4 месяца назад
Most of it has to do with where inflation is. Michigan property taxes increase by 5% or the rate of inflation. As far as roads it really depends on the community, they’ve been doing a lot of construction on the main expressways as of late. I had a conversation with a civil engineer asking why they wouldn’t just do the best possible material so they wouldn’t need to redo them again, and the reasoning is they don’t have enough funds at the time of construction to pay for it, so they put bandaids on it with the little amount of funds they do have. Property tax funds are disbursed in so many different directions, that’s also the hardship.
@Yesquire0
@Yesquire0 3 месяца назад
Michigan for decades was run by the auto and related industries like steel mfg. All were heavily reliant on 18-wheelers for the transport of products and materials. Their lobby was very efficient as to permissible weight levels for trucks on the roads. The trucks destroy the roads in fairly short order. The climate here plays a role, too. Once the concrete slabs get cracked, water enters and the freeze-thaw cycle brutalizes the concrete. Most of the property taxes fund local public schools. Increase in millages are generally on the ballot in off years when few people vote. School employees like teachers do show up in droves for those elections and get the increases passed, while at the same time electing pro-union school board members sympathetic to union demands at contract negotiation times. State roads are funded by the gasoline tax.

I am very much considering moving to Michigan, .....one question I have is, are there many horse properties there that are also close to longer Nature trails with a view hills and not just flat land? Because I so far I like everything about Michigan except that it doesn't have big mountains and I wonder if it even has at least a view hills?
@Yesquire0
@Yesquire0 3 месяца назад
There are actual mountains (2,000 ft) in the upper penninsula but no real mountainous areas in the Lower Pennisula, just sand dunes with a max height of about 700' along the shores of Lake Michigan built up by ages of sand being blown from the lakeshore inland. Most are now covered with soil and mature trees. There are plenty of ski resorts in the northwest corner of the L.P. built on those old sand dunes. But you asked about horses...... The Metro Detroit area has a vibrnt breeding and riding community. There used to be two pari-mutual race tracks, a harness one very close to the nothern city limits of Detroit in the suburb of Hazel Park, and a thoroughbred race track, Northvill Downs, in the City of Northvills about 15 miles due West of Detroit's western boundary. Casino gambling put both racetracks out of business. Horse lovers tended to locate in northern Oakland County about 20 miles north of the Hazel Park track on farms just outside of Northville Your are right about the City of Detroit being nothing but flat. It's built on an ice-age lake bottom. But to the northwest and west of the big city, the land becmes rolling due to retreating glaciers dumping their sand and gravel in irregular patterns. The resultant "hills" aren't very high, mabye 300' max here antd there, but where the hills are tallest, you will generally find public parks, and many of them have riding trails and staging areas for horse trailers. One area, Metamora, is an exurb of Detroit with all sorts of horse farms set on rolling land with mature forests, streams, and lakes. It may be a bit pricy, though, especially if your dream is to acquire some fenced acreage with a barn and spacious ranch home. The land around Northville is not quite as hilly, but if I were a horse, I'd still love it. Plus Northville has its own vibrant little downtown area to enjoy. One last point I'd like to make is that encircling the Metro Detroit area are a ring of "MetroParks". My favorite is Kensington MetroPark in MIlford, due to its petting farm and bike trails. I used to live in Milford, another nice city possessed of its own little downtown, and immediately adjacent to Kensington MetroPark. The place is virtually surrounded by parkland. Not being a horse guy, I never paid much attention to what degree those many parks accomodate horse riding, but I think they would have to. I do recall the areas outside of town having lots of fenced fields of the sort you tell yourself "there must be a pony in there somewhere!" I was curious and just googled "horse boarding"for western Oakland County and up popped 17 facilities. I've watched video of R.E. agents describing Detroit and environs in the hopes of building a book of business for themselves. I don't think they do a very good job of describing how beautful and natural the area is once you get out of the near-in and highly developed suburbs. Come take a look with your own eyes. I think you'll be amazed and convinced you stumbled upon one of the world's best secrets. Unless you'd prefer not to deal with a true (but rarely really harsh) winter, I can't think of anyplace else I'd rather live. "Expensive" is a relative concept. Pretty much everything in Metro Detroit is going to be cheaper than place on the East or West Coast. The $2.5M you might have to pay for a 1200 sq. ft. home in Marin County, CA, might buy you a horse farm outside of Milford. Once again, typing that made me curious. I know that's a big headline out there now for sure! I'd say nationally it is a problem, but in Michigan it's not as big of a problem. There's definitely been an uptick in all cash offers, but believe it or not, those offers are not all investors actually! People always say "cash is king" but a lot of these all cash offers are going in so far below asking price with the ego that it's all cash, whereas these people putting in offers over asking price with a mortgage and an appraisal guarantee (out of pocket money to cover the over asking price offer) are still winning.
@backrack01
@backrack01 9 месяцев назад
@LivingInMichigan That's what I assumed. I'm a little surprised people are still bidding over asking price still. Quick side note. Have you been to Muskegon lately. I barely recognized their downtown. It's going from a run down town to a place where your spending $70 for lunch. That city is underrated. Your only 10 min away from two beautiful state parks and a theme park.

I lived in northern Michigan in Grayling and it’s a rough town to live due to lack of good paying jobs. Lived there from age 5-25 and knowing everyone didn’t help me make good money. My dad drove to detroit and stayed in apartment all week and drove back up for weekend. I had to move to southern United States for work and my friends that stayed mostly struggle. Depressing the amount of dark skies everyday through winter and tough living. I miss how peaceful it was and summers but mostly stayed drunk. It’s cool they legalized pot I told my parents I may come back one day lol

I retired a few years ago and moved to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan from Indiana. And while I find it to be heaven on earth, it certainly is not for everyone. Lots of snow, but no colder than Indiana, and people up here, from the road crews to people just blowing out their driveways and sidewalks know what to do with snow...And then you can play in it, most ski or snowmobile, I snowshoe because I go deep in the woods. The roads are actually some of the best I have ever seen believe it or not. Jobs are few and low paying, but they are there, and the cost of living is very low. Anywhere in the UP other than Marquette one can find an unbelievable deal on a house. The internet, along with all other utilities is quite good and affordable. The town actually has a very nice restored theater, and there is a play, musical show, or movie about once a week, during the summer months, Actually, during the summer months it's hard to keep track of all the events going on. Yea it's 100 miles to a Wal-Mart or McDonalds, but who cares! The draw here is a peaceful, safe, slow-paced place to live, with true wilderness just outside your back door.

Michigan always has, now, and will be wimpy, easy street, nothing to write to mommy and grandmommy yearlong weather. We don't have F-4 and F-5 tornadoes. I know about this. My last USAF base was Sheppard AFB; Wichita Falls, Texas. April 10, 1979 a F-4 tornado came through the city. Forty four people died and 1,200 injured. Surprisingly there wasn't more people killed and injured of a city of 125,000 at the time. Unrelated to that, softball size hail has fallen in Texas before. This 355 inches of seasonal snowfall is nothing compared elsewhere to Western United States and elsewhere worldwide. Mt. Baker Ski Area, Washington about 15 miles south of British Colombia had 1140 inches of snow in 1998-1999 winter. That's over 95 FEET OF SNOW. Alta Ski Resort, Utah got 903 inches of snow two winter seasons ago. The record cold temperature for Michigan is -54 degrees below zero actual temperature that took place in the early 1950's in Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt is the right of I-75 about the third the distance from Gaylord to Indian River towards Mackinaw City. We don't have that temperature and let alone -70 degrees and -82 degrees below zero actual temperatures as state records for Montana and Alaska respectively. We don't have winds blowing 230 MPH that took place on top of Mt. Washington, New Hampshire recorded at the National Weather Station on top of this peak in 1934. I grew up in Detroit and Livonia. I remember people complaining about a insignificant 30 inches of seasonal snowfall. What a bunch of pansies. Compared to out west as I mentioned there's no reason to complain weather yearlong. I know as far as winter weather is. Because I drove across Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, and New Mexico all in winter. I didn't drive across Red Mountain Pass, Colorado. But driving across this mountain pass highway road could result in higher blood pressure, and sweaty hands. Colorado highway department keeps this highway open yearlong except for avalanche and debris removal. The following RU-vid video short shows what it is like. White Knuckle! Red Mountain Pass Colorado, don't take your eyes off the road! #shorts@wheeinoutwest

I hate to say it, but seems the state doesn't manage their funds too well. And are paying the politicians and county schools too much. I will definitely visit and enjoy the lakes and lighthouses. But cross off this state to move to.

Yep, for the first week or so after snow and freezing conditions hit, be extra careful. People are driving out of habit from the non-winter driving conditions. You'd think they'd be mostly tourists making this error, but sadly it is usually a resident that should know better.

Thanks for making the informative video. I love Michigan because of its natural beauty, Great Lakes, forests, apple, cherry orchards and amazing weather from spring to fall. Personally I hate 😄 the long colder months especially when it’s cloudy ☁️ during these colder months. But all these winter blues will go away in April when sun ☀️ is shining and all plants and animals birds come out to start one of the most beautiful spring in the world!

I grew up in south haven, mi and moved to Oklahoma for a few years then came back and am planning to go back to Oklahoma. I HATE Michigan. Winters are cold and dreary. I think the worst part of the weather is the permacloud, we have six months of little to no sun. Not to mention the people are horrible too. OK was very welcoming, everyone was respectful and friendly. MI is the exact opposite, a lot of selfish individuals who are just as cold as the weather

That's true you can't beat a Michigan summer. My reasoning for liking Oklahoma more goes beyond the weather and geography tho. Im at a point in my life where I'm transitioning into a better version of myself and one last thing I'm struggling with is drug addiction. I'm not saying the people in OK are better than MI but I have noticed that there is a culture down there where it's far less common for people to do drugs there (in my experience with the folks I met down there) and that's an environment I need right now@@travissmith9488

@AllergicToMakeBelieve
@AllergicToMakeBelieve 2 месяца назад
@@yourfavoritecoffeehouse9343 as a woman, I took love facial hair, when it compliments the face. My father, my brother, and my husband all have a variety of facial hair. In this young man's case, it's a distraction to his (very handsome) angular jawline. Further, his mustache has a gap over the philtrum, it's at an arrow-straight angle (devoid of the slight curve that is ideal) and his does not fully fill the space from under his nose to his lip. That nose-to-lip growth is what gives a mustache a lush, full look (Tom Selleck, Alex Trebek, Sam Elliott). This nice young man would likely look great with a "stubble beard." And yes ma'am you are correct... To each their own. Have a lovely day.

Is there a good job market for teachers outside of Detroit?
@LivingInMichigan
@LivingInMichigan 5 месяцев назад
Great question! There was actually a report that came out the middle of last year talking about the massive teacher shortage following the pandemic that is being addressed. I know Detroit will most likely have the largest supply of jobs, but there are definitely jobs in the cities outside of Detroit. I know a lot of people in teaching (coming from out of state mostly) will jump on the Michigan.gov website for educator recruitment to get their name out there and expose themselves to more opportunities, as It can be discouraging just browsing indeed, ziprecruiter, etc.
