Munising is on the south shore of Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This small town of only 2,000 people is known as the gateway to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, which has some of the most stunning rock formations that you'll see in all of North America.

I've driven along Lake Superior many, many times, Munising to Marquette. It is even more beautiful than the camera can show. We live in Kentucky now and I'm not convinced that avoiding the harsh winters is worth not living among the natural beauty of Michigan. We're in our eighties now and actually considering back to Michigan.

Range lights are designed to be separated by a distance, and the rear is elevated higher than the front. They're a fixed light system that allows boats to enter safely into harbors, ports, bays, rivers, etc. by lining the two lights up together (one on top of the other). If you take an evening Pictured Rocks cruise and come back into the bay when it's dark, they explain how they work. At least they did on the cruise I took. Great video!

I'm from Munising but haven't been home much since leaving after graduation in 2000 so this was nice to see. Traditionally we flip santa off when we drive by him because, that's what it looks like he's doing. The Brick Building was Mather Middle School when I attended until 8th grade, tho it was a Highschool when my parents went. It's attached to the Elementary school and is I think mostly used for that up to grad 5. It's also the main performance venue for the community as it houses a fairly large stage and auditorium. 22:08 I'm so bummed out to see that the trees that used to grow along the front of the school are all gone. That median was always full of Maple trees...like...bad call cutting those down.

This is a late comment, don’t know how I missed this video. My family went to Munising as our Pictured Rocks Trip. This was such a nice small town to stay in! My parents, sister, aunt, uncle, & cousins stayed at The Roam Inn which was very nice, had a great restaurant (Tracey’s), and huge pictures in the hallways of areas from the region. My grandparents stayed at the Pictured Rocks RV Park in Christmas and spent the last three days of our trip there. I wish I would’ve known about the Bay Furnace and the Rear Range Lighthouse, those would have been cool to see. Our family didn’t go on the tour, we instead rented a Pontoon Boat so we could take pictures closer than we probably should’ve, we never hit bottom, because my uncle was a great captain. We were there only 2 weeks before the video of the cliff face collapsing near the kayakers. The tour boats did produce quite a wake so we had a couple instances of the front of our boat going under the water. We saw the wreck of the SS Bermuda, very eerie but awesome! We also went to see the Munising Falls which is a hidden gem, very beautiful. A lotta nice restaurants that include Tracey’s(amazing pasta), Eh Burger, and Foggy’s Steakhouse in Christmas. We did a day where we drove to Tahquamenon Falls and Oswald’s Bear Ranch, both pretty far away. The one thing that Munising has that I had never experienced until that trip, is that they have a curfew alarm/speaker for all the locals. Tourists don’t have to follow this rule, but for everyone that is a resident of the town, especially kids and teenagers have to. Nothing like that in or near Metro Detroit where I live. Overall, I would definitely go back in the future, it was a very enjoyable vacation!

My hometown. I now live in Florida, but I go back nearly every year. Great folks, beautiful topography, wonderful fishing and camping. Nice Job on your video. Unfortunately you missed the peak of fall. I saw a house we used to own and several of my friends homes. As a young man, I enjoyed a cabin on Miners Beach for many of my youthful summers before it became the focal point of the National Lakeshore. The area where Miners River joins Lake Superior and the sandstone cliffs give way to broad sandy beaches is magical. Living there was wonderful, and I made a silent prayer of thanks each time I topped the hill and looked down on the bay. But barely making a living, with little prospect of a bright future, was the tradeoff for the beauty, adventure, and camaraderie of the area. That choice was one I would have happily made for myself but could not ask my wife and children to endure.

One of our stops was Munising where we explored part of Pictured Rocks, visited some waterfalls and ate some pasties at Miner's Pasty Kitchen. Although we only spent a few hours there, we really were amazed at all the spectacular scenery. So much so, we plan on going back there specifically for a a getaway next summer. Definitely want to take one of the cruises around Grand Island and explore Pictured Rocks and more waterfalls.

Gonna start mapping out my personal experiences while you drive through. 18:42 if you go straight there's a trail called frogs hallow where I take my truck sometimes it's known for a mudpit at the middle of the trail. 19:04 turn left before terrace motel and you'll find the old ski hill, it was shut down after a teenager going up the skilift was wearing a scarf that got wrapped around the rope connected to the cable that goes around the pulleys and was strangled at the top when the cable passed through the enclosed pulley. 21:34 the old brick building is actually the elementary school, pre through 5th grade, funded by William Mather it was originally the highschool before the current middle/highschool was built. This is where I went to elementary school and I have great memories, the school was equipped with a 2 story auditorium and under is "the pit" with colosseum style setting around a basket all court. Hidden behind the wall is a pool that was shut down, I remember sneaking into it with my friends and exploring the old locker rooms and 15 ft pool filled with stuff. 22:14 the old building is a apartment building mostly with older residents. Some more spots in munising: 5:50 red sign on the left is theis for the lighthouse on the other side and on the sign side there is a great spot to pitch hammocks. 7:43 on the right is a overlook for grand island it's a great spot to eat your food. 17:46 you should've went east of munising you can see the paper mill and above it is the end of a power line trail that overlooks the whole town with a perfect sunset picture over there town, to get to the trail you continue east through the roundabout and turn right on Connors road until you see a intersection with Miller road and Connors road and you turn right instead of left onto Miller road and take that power line trail its not too rough. I've pitched tents and thrown parties up there. You could also continue east through the roundabout and turn left onto Washington street then you hit sand point road where great sunsets are

This town is only 24 minutes away from a boy scout camp I used to go to. The camp was called "camp Hiawatha" also one day we took a 15 mile hike in the town to look at the 5 waterfalls in the area. There was another waterfall between alger falls and tannery falls but you had to pay to see it. Also we had a choice the councilors gave us we could either go out on lake superior on sea kayaks or take a 15 mile hike to see waterfalls. Also I'm from Wisconsin and camp Hiawatha is the only scout camp in bay lakes council that is not in Wisconsin

Back in the day that casino in Christmas used to basically be a single wide trailer. I remember us stopping there for a few so my Mom could go in and waste some money on the slots. This would have been in the early 90’s.

Thanks Jay. How many people do you think outside of Michigan have heard of Pictured Rocks?

@@ChrisHarden Very few, and very few in Michigan,,but that has changed now and the tourist are flocking in and I would bet housing prices there are also on the rise related to people wanting summer homes there.

Nice video. I grew up in that area. FYI, "Au Train" is pronounced by the locals as "Ah Train", not "Ow Train". In the Upper Peninsula, "sauna" rhymes with "town" and "frown" and "noun", not with "saw" or "jaw". "Au Train" rhymes with "quatrain" or "Bahrain".

Front and rear range lights work when you see them from a distance one light on top of the other tells you the way into the harbor.

I love these kinds of videos, to ring around little towns in interesting places, but it's pretty lazy to not even Google about that rear range lighthouse. It's easily searchable.

Born and raised there. Return multiple times per year. We never heard of Wick$trom, ever. I get your explanation, but seems a foolish reference. And TBH, I have never heard the term hilljack used to speak of people from there? Glad you showed the town off a bit...Hope you spent some $$ there.

Achieving fusion power would help these northern locales. Sure, people might want a summer home there: Timidly, I suggest that, somehow, adjusting property taxes might help--then, the UP may achieve a tourist economy more akin to Colorado's, Wyoming,'s or Montana's (Vermont, etc.). Push snowmobiling, ice fishing,, snowshoeing, x-country skiing, survival camping--put on crazy like minded, media-hog contests--get attention. You don't see Moab, Utah complaining! Face it: This is a tourist destination and economy--re-invent! Go for year-round--but, do it right!
