If you’re an average user and you want an M3 MacBook with a big screen, the choice comes down to the 15” MacBook Air and the 16” MacBook Pro - but how do you know which one to choose? I know that there is some confusion about external display support - and I found something strange about file transfer speeds - so we’ll talk about it.
I don’t want to spoil some of the ending, but if you’re a super demanding user and you’re always pushing your laptop to the max - save yourself some time and just get the MacBook Pro - but for the rest of us, there’s a lot to consider.

I think a comparison more worth making (because of proximity in price) is M3 MacBook pro and a 15 inch M3 air with identical configurations. Great video regardless

Agreed. I've been trying to find a video/review comparing the two but it's been rough. I think it comes down to if you think the extra 1" in size and 0.2kg in weight will be noticeable to you, get the 15" Air. Otherwise the 14" MBP would be best (particularly because with the sales on the MBP you can probably find them for the same price).

"Buy it nice or buy it twice". Solid advice there. I went for the base M1 MBA and regretted it. With just 8GB of RAM, I hit limits really quickly and can only have 3 or 4 apps opened at once to get work done. Even Sidecar to my iPad couldn't work well as I found out much later that it is RAM intensive. Will be upgrading to the spec'ed out 15" Air soon when retailers offer discounts.

Thanks for another great comparison, I look forward to them every Monday morning. I think I would opt for an upgraded Air these days (16/512) for the savings in cost and weight. I'm with you on the notch, I don't even see the thing and don't understand what the big deal is, and I like the Space Gray so smudges have never been an issue.

This was a fun video. My thought process is the MBA is for the casual user. Any power user is going to have the MBP for the reasons you mentioned and many more. IMO, it is so unfair to compare the two because they are for different users and one is more powerful than the other & one is more expensive than the other. Keep up the great work! This is a great report Thank you so much! Could you give me some personal advice? I have a MacbookPro 15" 2017 16GB / 2 TB SSD and would like to upgrade, especially for using Lightroom and PS for 60 MP Raw image editing. Would you recommend the MBA 15" with 24GB/2TB or do I need the MBPro as money is tight what would be the different for photo processing? Does the MBA run hot easily? I appreciate your input.

Getting the MacBook Air 15. Expecting a huge upgrade with the M4 / M5 MacBook Pro and that is when I'll upgrade for that long term Mac purchase.

Which one should I get for my work computer should the Macbook air 15 is better than MacBook pro 16 or what I need help with it to decide ? I’m trying to comparison with either the MacBook Air 15 or MacBook pro 16 or Hp 15.6 inch laptop from Amazon ? I find that the larger Apple notebooks such as the 15 inch 2018 MB Pro are comfortable to type on when used on the lap but are not comfortable to type on when used on the desk due to the relatively long distance from the front edge of the notebook to the keyboard. I find it more comfortable to type when the upper arms are more in there vertical position. However, a solution to this issue is to angle the computer about 10-15 degrees.

What do you suggest? I'm thinking of switching from M1 Macbook Pro 16 inch to M3 Macbook Air 15 inch, as I find that the 16 inch Pro is too heavy to carry everyday. I thought I could carry it, but my back hurts after walking the whole day with it on my backpack. Is the M3 Macbook Air faster and better than M1 Macbook Pro 16 inch?

side note from me. a lot of people complain about portability but its kinda makes me laugh a bit a remember toting the old disk drive monsters from back in the day. Also I have the m3 air and found a used 16" m2 pro 16/512 just like my air but for 1300$ instead of 1699.99 plus tax. returned m3 air for the m2 pro. and I got 2 more years of apple care on top. maybe something to consider for those trying to justify the cost difference between new and new. it had a whopping 9 cycles with 100% capacity.

For that, I think the best is to assemble a PC. Macbook isn't the best for it. Even if you get the Macbook, you will end up training models on Kaggle or Colab.

People who work in this area are typically looking for systems with massive amounts of memory to handle large data sets so the MB Air will not suffice.

Up the RAM and it can handle it. That being said there are perks to the pro. As a student I find the air is enough but the base model is not. I can’t comment at professional level or PhD level CS. It’s definitely enough for a masters.

Nope, 8gb ram is just too low. These people saying its enough are idiots. I use 4gb ram laptop and its all good. Doesn't mean you should get 8 gb laptop for 1300usd lol.

No. You can get baselina M1 Air with 8 GB "cheap" for Apple, but for M3 considering how long it's going to be supported and that storage is apparently OK again - take at least 16 GB with M3.

I am a Graphic Designer and a Photographer from India who works on multiple layers in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom Classic, Figma and Canva, also I am planning to start learning video editing using Adobe's Premier Pro or Davinci Resolve and motion graphics using Adobe After Effects. Currently, I am using an AUS ROG Zephyrus G14 from 2020 with 16 gigs of memory and 1 TB of storage (this is the base model btw which has a Ryzen 5 4600 HS CPU and a Nvidia GTX 1650 ti GPU). I usually have multiple apps running and this is how it might look on average: 1. Photoshop 2. Illustrator 3. Figma (along with Photoshop on rare scenarios) 4. Lightroom Classic (sometimes along with Photoshop) 3. A browser (2 different ones like Brave and Firefox sometimes), 4. Apple Music, 5. Windows file explorer (4 to 5 tabs), 6. A communication app (like Slack or Teams) and 7. Notion. So now can you tell me whether a person like me can get away with a decently specced Macbook Air (like a 15-inch model with 24 gigs of memory and 1 TB of storage) instead of a much more powerful Macbook Pro?
