I agree, and it's the people who literally defend this who are in part to blame for why Apple carry on doing it. No point having a quality product on the outside if it's half baked on the inside really. Nothing with a Pro name on the outside of the box should have entry level storage and memory from a decade ago, and that's before you even get to the insane price tags nowadays on the Apple store.

As a commercial video editor/motion designer who went from a 15" to 14" MBP, the portability of the 14" is so noticeable and IMO unbeatable. If you're serious about doing client work for graphics, you'd best use an external monitor regardless. And you'd eventually invest in a dedicated studio setup with more horsepower.

I imagine that the benchmark, fan noise, and thermal differences between the 14 inch and 16 inch MB Pros will be less for the 30 core Max and certainly the Pro. Separately, I fired up my 2018 15 inch MB Pro with its depleted battery to evaluate notebook computer size. Having the larger screen and equally the larger trackpad when compared to my wife's 13 inch M1 MB Air machine makes the larger machine such a pleasure to use when situated, not constrained by a tight work area, and not moving the computer around often when situated. However, it is about being able to freely move the computer throughout the day not only from place to place but in place without noticing it that is a major draw of the 14 inch. I would much more likely want to bring the 13 inch MB Air with me and use it rather than the larger 15 inch MB Pro. My thoughts right now are to wait for the M3 Mac Studio or possibly the M3 Mac Mini since most of what I do is at the desk and then possibly complementing it with a forthcoming M3 based iPad Pro or iPad air.

@lukemiani One thing that I consistently see regarding comparison between the 14in and the 16in or base M3Max vs Top M3Max are rendering benchmark tests of small projects. I believe the disparity of performance of the models will show better if a more intense tasks were involved. For example, 1 hour long timeline of 5k, 6k, or 8k footage and effects. Also how do they handle ProRes Raw, BRaw, or RedCode Raw. Since the Max chips M1, M2, M3 all have the same amount of encoders/decoders a test like what I expressed should expose what all of those GPU cores are actually doing.

As someone who went from 16 inch to 14 inch for work, this video misses the biggest difference of all between the two machines. Performance for my job has been great, but the devices are just so different based on how big the 16 inch model is. It's thicker, heavier, taller. The screen and trackpad and speakers are all the best on any portable device. It's hard to communicate through pictures or video, but the experience of using them is a way bigger difference than some mild benchmark differences.

I think the assumption is that this (and other) videos is trying to isolate purely on performance and battery life. Think it's clear that what size fits your lifestyle best between a 14" or 16" should be one of the most important factors one considers when deciding between the two. That being said, you're right, the 16" pro is hefty - a big consideration. I'm happy w/ my 2021 14" M1 Pro.

The 16” comes with a couple of bonuses: the display is larger, you will get more of that beautiful mini led display, the bezels look slimmer due to the ratios, the notch looks smaller for the same reason. The 16” gets a larger trackpad which is more convenient to use and the speakers are better giving richer sound. As far as battery life the 16” gets three hours more in terms of web browsing, and also gets a more powerful 140 watt power supply.

@ashley-paul
@ashley-paul 6 месяцев назад
Peak core temperature is not going to affect anything but the CPU itself, which is rated to run at that temperature. A heatsink will spread the heat output out evenly, meaning that total power draw ultimately determines how much heat the rest of the system experiences. That's to say, you could have a CPU at 90C drawing 50 watts, or you could have a CPU at 105C drawing 25 watts, and the one drawing 50 watts is generating twice as much heat. I think lot of reviewers don't really fully seem to comprehend this. Temperature is not the same thing as heat. You can pass your finger quickly through a lit flame, which is 600 C, and experience no real damage. But you can get burns if you submerge in 50 C water. Ultimately, how much heat your system produces is a simple matter of how much power it uses. It's simple thermodynamics. I personally believe that most of these newer Macs will have a very long life thermally speaking because ultimately their power draw is very low, meaning even if their core temps might be high at times, especially at bursts, the system is not generating much heat over long periods of time. Low core temps are so overrated, IMO.

I love the form factor of the 14 (typing on the binned 14 now, as I am giving it a trial run), but I wonder what could have been if they had kept it the same thickness as the 16. Would the thermals have been significantly better? I do love the form factor, but at this price, it's not worth sacrificing performance. Also, I have loved the 16-inch MacBook Pro for a couple of years due to the better speakers when not using headphones and more screen real estate, but it just doesn't run Windows on Parallels as snappily as I need. So, I am definitely staying with the MacBook Pro M3 Max on either the 16-inch or 14-inch model. Silly question 🤔: but the fans kick in/higher temperature in the 14inch is because of those """limited""" specs? if you upgrade the ram with 64 or even 128gb, would you have the same issue? 🤔 Even tho, if we consider those specs of the model you're using and more importantly the price of that machine, you shouldn't have any issues in the first place and everything should run smoothly 99,97% of the time!

The same as on The M1 and the M2. They haven’t fixed the constraints of a smaller chassis and cooling system with the same chipset. Let’s be honest though most of the time on real world use these 14 inch MacBooks will be bloody brilliant.

The conclusions seem to be the complete opposite to Max Tech's recent video, and I assume that is the x factor giving the two different perspectives. This to me is why the 12/18 M3 Pro is the best among the 14-inch models. There’s plenty of power available for all but the absolute most demanding tasks (said users should get the 16-inch anyway) while also not compromising on thermals, battery life, and acoustics.

That’s why that’s the model I opted for even with all the “experts” on RU-vid claiming it makes no sense
@VMYeahVN
@VMYeahVN 5 месяцев назад
@@iFkNxLegend They're saying that because the M3 Pro is objectively a paltry upgrade over the M2 Pro. It literally has less bandwidth and less transistors on the chip than the M2 Pro. Apple added two more performance cores and took away two efficiency cores to balance it out so it didn't actually be a DOWNgrade from M2 Pro. It's literally a side step and not an upgrade. Still is an "ok" upgrade if you're coming from M1 or Intel, but just on principle it's not worth what they're charging. Apple is charging "big 30% upgrade over M2 Pro" money for M3 Pro, but the chip is not that, and that's why it doesn't really make sense to buy if you care about your dollar. No one's saying it's un-useable, it's just a bad deal for how much it doesn't deliver what it should have compared to M3 over M2 and M3 Max over M2 Max. So that's why most of the tech reviewers are shitting on the M3 Pro. Just because it's "enough" for you doesn't mean the tech reviewers don't know what they're talking about or are wrong.

Just bought new 14'' m3 max 36/1tb for $2600 (sale price+bank's cashback). An only drawback was a thought that 16'' suits my work better (video edit) but just as I guessed -when in office I use external monitor, when in trips would have to get used to it ^) but then it's when the portability kicks in and not that outweighs but contributes to the balance against benefits of 16'' inch. Your comparison is a soothing balm to my wound as frankly wished I bought 16'' (I have not touched it yet in transit but really hope I won't regret the purchase).

I need Windows for development purposes. A workmate said to me, "always spec it out." I was lucky, in 2015 I got a 2015 15 inch and I ran band camp natively, smoothly and without issues. Absolutely loved it. Luke has done a great RU-vid to show how the 2015 a5 inch hits the sweet spot. The 15 inch is only now starting to chug, and the alternatives are confusing. Windows laptop hardware always seems to involve some kind of compromise with build quality and speed. Windows 11 requires security hardware, and this looks to me like a trend to make Windows on Mac "uncomfortable". Virtual machines on the Mac do not seem to be a solution.

We need a 14 binned vs non binned test. Does the max base run cooler, with less fan noise, probably but how much? I'm not cross shopping the 14 vs 16, I don't want to carry a boat anchor around. So which 14 the is the question. Apple has limited the memory in the Pro and base Max to push people to the binned Max. The 14 max 64GB is $100 cheaper than the 14 base 96GB. If the binned max throttles, then it may be worth getting the base with 96GB.

Good testing those two sizes of M3 max MBPs. Do people weigh up which size of MBP in terms of possible speed differences? Maybe previous M1 and M2s were different power in size. I tend to choose the form factor first, so for me 16" first. If I traveled more I would probably go with 14". Having said that I could only go for the M2 pro as the Max was overkill for me. Interesting the M3 Mac MBP has the more efficiency cores. But if you need that power M3 Max MBP is a fantastic machine.

Why can't they just get people to return their mbps and have the new innards swapped out with the new M3 chip? It's the same darn chassis right same display, same ports ???? Why do they keep saying recycled when that makes more carbon in the atmosphere, how do they expect to reach their so called imaginary goal ? Is it too fantastical to suggest what I suggested to just swap out all the innards in an otherwise it's the same chassis as the M1's and M2's?

The 14” is yes a fantastic portable MacBook Pro for those that are travelling around but it’s also not comfortable to use without some form of additional hand/wrist support.
